BIO-MEDICAL WASTE STATUS REPORT 2006<br />
I feel proud to know that Bio- Medical <strong>Waste</strong> Management Cell, Directorate <strong>of</strong> Health<br />
Services, Government <strong>of</strong> NCT <strong>of</strong> Delhi is bringing out its Status Report 2006.<br />
<strong>Waste</strong> Management is one <strong>of</strong> the important public health measures. To control hazards<br />
to human health and environment Ministry <strong>of</strong> Environment and Forest, Govt. <strong>of</strong> India has<br />
notified the Bio-Medical <strong>Waste</strong> (Management & Handling) Rules 1998 under the<br />
Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (29 <strong>of</strong> 1986). The guidelines have also been prepared to<br />
enable each hospital for waste management in terms <strong>of</strong> segregation, collection,<br />
transportation, treatment and disposal <strong>of</strong> hospital waste.<br />
Poor management <strong>of</strong> health-care waste may also damage the environment, in addition<br />
to creating opportunities for the collection <strong>of</strong> disposable medical equipment (particularly<br />
syringes), its re-sale and potential re-use without sterilization - a practice which causes an<br />
important burden <strong>of</strong> disease worldwide.<br />
I feel that the compiled information will be very useful for all Medical & Para-medical<br />
personnel and general public large.<br />
