Appositives are nouns that rename a noun that has come before it.
Example: My mom cooks my favorite dinner, Micky Mouse
pancakes, every Tuesday night.
In this example pancakes is an appositive because it renames
dinner.... basically, an appositive is just another noun saying the
the same thing in a different way that follows the noun it is
renaming.
Commas are placed on either side of the appositive IF the appositive is
not necessary to the meaning of the sentene.
In the following sentences, underline both the noun and the appositive. Draw an arrow
from the appositive back to the noun it renames.
The book, the hard cover one, is on the table.
The clock, on the wall, says 8:10.
The door, with the oak finish, was open.
The lamp, with the furry shade, needs to be turned off.
The cat, fluffy and black, sprinted across the street.
