Welcome – Välkommen – Tervetuloa!
Dear Reader,
We have gathered information in this brochure about all sorts of courses and
programmes, as well as social activities offered by the Finland-Swedish adult
education centres, associations, organisations and a few companies in the
Helsinki Capital Region in this brochure. Our aim is to bring forward the Finland-Swedish
community in an easy package.
There are more possibilities than ever before to learn Swedish in the region
and furthermore the Swedish vocational school Prakticum and Arcada University
of Applied Sciences are offering new programmes for immigrants that
want to do a degree in Swedish. Have a look inside! Life is also about meeting
new people, finding new friends and finding new ways to make an impact on
the society around us. We also need large networks to find work. Therefore,
we have invited more organisations and associations to join us in this brochure.
We hope you will find new friends, pick up a new or old hobby and get
connected. Get in touch with Luckan if you can’t find a suitable association,
they will help you along.
Each organisation is responsible for their text and we apologise for any possible
mistakes. We are also pleased to see the large interest of associations
and organisations in the region to be included in this brochure. We want to
thank all of our partners and wish all of you a wonderful autumn!
Welcome!
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
What is an Adult Education Centre?
“There are around two hundred adult education centres in Finland. The centres
are called either in Finnish, kansalaisopisto and in Swedish medborgarinstitut
(citizens` institute) or in Finnish työväenopisto and in Swedish arbetarinstitut
(workers` institute). They offer education and training mainly to the
adult population in different parts of the country. Anyone can attend the
courses, irrespective of their age, profession or educational background. “
(Kansalaisopistojen liitto, 2012)
What is an association?
“In Finland many common issues are dealt in associations. Associations have
had a significant importance in the history of Finland. Through associations,
Finns have, for instance, promoted hobby activities, arranged education,
spread religious beliefs, advocated the abstinence movement, defended the
interests of groups and participated in politics. Even nowadays there are a
lot of associations in Finland. They work for example to advance the causes
of children, senior citizens and the environment. For instance sports associations
and cultural associations promote hobbies. In addition, the Finnish political
system is based on the operation of associations, since political parties
are actually associations.” (Raittinen, Ministry of Labour, 2002)
How is this brochure funded?
The brochure is funded by the project Delaktig i Finland i huvudstadsregionen
(www.delaktig.fi) that is part of the nationwide programme Osallisena
Suomessa – Delaktig I Finland. The programme is funded by the Ministry
of Employment and Economy, Ministry of Education and Culture, The
Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities, The Finnish Cultural
Foundation, The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland. The aim of Delaktig
I Finland i huvudstadsregionen is to develop official integration pathways in
Swedish in the capital region. Helsingfors arbis, the Swedish Adult Education
Centre in Helsinki is the owner and Luckan functions as the civil society partner
of the project.
Turkish cooking class (26 €)
16/9 / 7/10 / 21/10 / 4/11
Come and learn the secrets of cooking wonderful Turkish dishes. Turkish food
is considered to be one of the top cuisines in the world. Traditional Turkish food
has depth and variety, as it can be either Ottoman food fit for the Sultans or
Turkish food from the small villages throughout Anatolia. During the threehour
class, I will teach a three-course meal selected from traditional meat and
vegetarian dishes like soups, meat dishes, vegetables, different rice and mezes
- the Turkish appetizers. Meze would be a selection of cold and hot dishes
served in small dishes. It is similar to Spanish tapa dishes but the taste is very
different. Traditionally the chosen dishes are placed in the centre of the table
and everyone helps themselves from the selection. This is a very sociable and
friendly environment in which to entertain friends, family or guests. All cooking
classes conclude with tasting Turkish coffee that is served with Turkish delight.
Food fee 15 € / person / class. Max 10 students.
SOCIAL LIFE
Let’s celebrate! – A Year of Festivals.
Have you ever celebrated the ending of Ramadan, been to a Purim- masquerade?
Do you know the history of the Christmas tree tradition?
The year of festivals gives schoolchildren an opportunity to celebrate festivals
from different cultures and introduces knowledge about different cultures,
traditions and religions. Throughout the year, children learn about less wellknown
traditions and religions as well as their own traditions. During the year
of festivals we emphasize interactivity, experiences, drama and workshops.
Art, culture and traditions are in focus, but religion is not practiced.
The handbook FIRA TILLSAMMANS (LET`S CELEBRATE TOGETHER) provides
instructions for a year of festivals at your OWN school! The book has been
published by Schildts 2010.
The year of festivals started as a pilot project in Blomängens lågstadieskola
(Blomängen elementary school) in Helsinki 2008-09. Since then, the project
has expanded to new schools each year.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Tigern r.f.
Tigern associations purpose is to volunteer and give financial support for Ny
Tid and otherwise promote, in particular, finnish-swedish cultural radicalism.
To realize its purpose, the association may possess such typographic equipment
needed for operations.
The association can organizing fundraisers and raffles, and receive donations
and legacies to support the work of Ny Tid.
Tigern rf was founded in the 80’s as a association that provides financial aid
for the newspaper Ny Tid. The loss of municipal advertisement led to a radical
50

drop in revenues which resulted in the association having to cut spending’s.
Due to this a support association was established. It was named Tigern from
the slogan “Ny Tid tiger inte” (Ny Tid does not remain silent). The associations
first project was aimed at raising funds for new investments and therefore
the membership fee was raised to 500 FIM (about 83 €).
Due to more than 150 readers paying the raised membership fee the campaign
succeeded which meant that the association could invest in a new
typesetter for Ny Tid and therefore the paper’s technical costs were cut down
considerably. The technical development evolved rapidly and after a while
it became worth acquiring a new typesetter, for this purpose a similar fund
raising campaign was carried out. Tigern also organized parties, trips and
theater visits for the Ny Tid readers and for Tigern members. Ny Tid had economically
been a part of DFFF’s activities, but when the Leftwing Party was
founded they did not want to take over any newspapers and therefore Tigertext
Ltd was founded to carry the magazine forward. According to the proven
Tiger pattern a campaign was carried out in which about 150 readers bought
shares in the new Tigertext corporation for 500 mk (83€). Tigern r.f. gave the
typesetter to Tigertext in exchange for shares. This gave Tigern a majority of
Tigertext shares. For a long time the activity was concentrated to Tigertext,
but in 2007 it was considered justified to resume other active operations to
support the magazine.
