Parshat Chayei Sarah By: Rabbi Landsman
Perhaps the most difficult challenge we face as parents and educators is how to
effectively transmit Torah values and ethics. The Torah ascribes greatness to Avraham
Avinu because of his ability to communicate these moral teachings.
Rabbi Yonasan Sacks, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshiva University quotes the Ran who
explains Avraham’ s insistence that the wife of Yitzchak be chosen from Charan rather
then from Canaan. Avraham’s rejection of Canaan was not predicated upon their
idolatrous practices. Avraham’s objection to the Canaanim was based on his familiarity
with their flawed moral character. As difficult as it is to disseminate Torah knowledge,
molding and developing a Torah personality is an even more formidable challenge.
Hence, the prime concern of Avraham Avinu was that his daughter-in-law embody ethical
and moral excellence.
Rabbi Sacks quotes the Kil Yakar who emphasizes the need to create an encompassing
environment conducive to Torah life. The Kil Yakar questions Avraham’s
need to stress “Not from among whom I dwell.” The Kli Yakar explains that Avraham’s
concern was the potentially negative impact of an improper environment. Were
Yitzchak’s wife to be chosen from Canaan, she would constantly be subjected to the
pressures and influences of her youth. Avraham therefore insisted that her family not
live in Canaan.
How can we cultivate and nurture this sense of ethics and morality so vital to effective
parenting? The Gemara explains, “Rabbi Chaim, son of Rabbi Chaninah
further said, what is the meaning of the verse, ‘You should walk after the Lord your
God?’” Is it possible for a human being to walk after Hashem?
The meaning is to follow the attributes of Hashem. Hashem visits the sick, as it
is said, “And Hashem appeared to him at Elonei Mamreh”, so to “You should visit the
sick.”
Unlike most mitzvot, which are generally conveyed through rules and instructions,
moral and ethical tenets are taught by example. Instead of commanding us directly
to visit the sick and comfort those who mourn, the Torah records how Hashem preforms
such deeds and implores His people to do the same.
Our mandate v’halachta bidrachav, to follow in His ways, requires each of us to
convey and transmit the substance and beauty of Torah in a similar way, to teach and
impart Torah values by example, not merely through instruction. Shabbat Shalom!
YCQ WINS FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON!
By: Reuven Penn
On Wednesday night, October 24, 2012, the YCQ Wildcats played
ASHAR. It was the season opener for both teams. YCQ came out
strong, scoring three goals in the first period. Avi Orlow scored two and
Moshe Simon had the third. ASHAR came back to score two goals, but
couldn’t find the third, as YCQ ended up on top 3 – 2. Mazel tov to
Yan Daniels on his first win as head coach of the Wildcats. What a way
to start the season, and good luck for the rest of season.
Kindergarten Open House A Huge Success
This past Sunday YCQ had an extremely successful Kindergarten Open House. It was aended by over for‐
ty new families that came from the surrounding neighborhoods in Queens as well as the Five Towns and
West Hempstead. While the adults enjoyed a slideshow presentaon and heard from YCQ students, Ra‐
ziel Siegman, Elisheva Zatz, Dr. Eve Sullivan, Morah Sharon Korn, Rabbi Landsman, YCQ PA President Mrs.
Jodi Tanzman, and Mr. Sruli Glaser Chairman of the Board, the children parcipated in music, gym, and
visits to the Kindergarten classrooms where they made cra projects. Numerous people helped make this
day such a success. Thank you to Morah Rivky Huff, Morah Selma Goreid, Morah Raina Popowitz, Mo‐
NEW PARENT EVENT AT YCQ ON OCT. 23
The YCQ Parents Association had a nice turnout at the annual new parents welcome evening on Tuesday night, October 23 rd . Held in
the multi purpose room, parents met and socialized with each other. Rabbi Landsman opened up with a beautiful dvar torah and
welcome. We then heard a timely lecture on “Helping our kids have the space to grow”. Our Social Work Director, Mrs. Marcy
Davidovics, LCSW, spoke about how ‘helicopter parenting’ is detrimental to a child’s individuality and shared reasons why this
phenomena exists and what we, as parents, can do to help our children be independent and still be well guided. The best part of the evening
was hearing each parent introduce themselves and share why they chose YCQ. It was a good feeling to hear how much our school is
appreciated and how wonderful a reputation it has. We are so thrilled to welcome our new families to our ‘home’ at YCQ.
YCQ MADE A BEAUTIFUL BAT MITZVAH FOR REBECCA ABER
YCQ celebrated Rebecca Aber’s bat mitzvah on Wednesday, November 7 th in the multi-purpose room
with all the 7 th grade girls, Morot, administrators, Rebecca’s family, and some of the YESS staff. A big
YASHER KOACH to Rabbi Lonner, who gave his unconditional approval to make it a most special
Simcha. Not only did the kitchen staff prepare delicious eggs, bagels, cream cheese, juice and fries,
there were beautiful pink cupcakes and fruit as well. The paper goods and flowers were something to
behold. The Simcha began with Rebecca entering the room through a ‘friends tunnel of upstretched
arms’ where Mrs. Karen Daitchman was ready with her keyboard and uplifting Jewish music.
Dancing continued for a bit and then there was an inspiring bat mitzvah speech from
Rebecca. What a lovely job she did! In addition, Mrs. Maxine Lipshitz, our fabulous
and talented resident photographer, took a generous amount of photos and videos as well
as family photos for the Aber’s to enjoy. After presenting Rebecca with a few gifts, the
girls and teachers shared meaningful brachot out loud for Rebecca.
We would like to thank Rabbi Lonner, Morah Schussheim,
Morah Fischman and Mrs. Davidovics for everything they did.
Everyone had a wonderful time but none more wonderful than
Rebecca herself who had a smile from ear to ear! Mazel Tov!
8th Grade High School Night
The eighth grade parents had a chance to familiarize themselves with various high schools at the eighth grade High
School Night this past Wednesday. Principals and administrators from SKA, DRS, Central, MTA, North Shore, HANC,
SAR, HAFTR, Shalhevet, Flatbush Yeshiva, Ezra and Ramaz gathered at YCQ to introduce themselves, their school’s
mission, philosophy and curriculum to the YCQ parents. Rabbi Landsman addressed the parents, giving them helpful tips
on choosing a high school for their child. Parents then attended the private meetings of the schools they were interested
in. The evening was a success and the parents had a chance to really get to know each high school represented at the
YCQ High School Night.
Election Day
This past Tuesday, Mrs. Cohen's third grade class really got into the election spirit! All the kids
came to school wearing red, white, and blue, and were surprised to find a classroom fully decorated
with streamers, balloons, and even a voting booth! The class participated in several
election activities, and then had a mock election for the President and Vice President of the
United States. They finished off the day by hosting Morah Blum and her first grade students.
The third graders taught them many different things that they have learned about the
election. Then the first graders got to vote for their favorite candidate too! It was a fun and
exciting learning experience for all!

PARSHA IN A NUTSHELL- השרפה םוכיס
Parshat Chayei Sara has two main stories.
The first is the burial of Sara in Me’arat Hamachpela
(הלפכמה תרעמ) in the City of Hevron, and the second is
the story of Eliezer’s mission to find a wife for Yitzchak.
Sara lived until the age of 127. Avraham
purchased the Cave of the Machpela from Ephron for
400 silver shekels, and buried Sara there.
Avraham was concerned about finding a wife
for Yitzchak. He sent Eliezer, his servant, to seek a
woman from Aram Naharayim. When Eliezer reached
his destination, he waited by the well outside the city,
and prayed to Hashem for help on his mission. He
asked Hashem to help him identify the proper girl.
Eliezer would ask one of the girls at the well to give him
some water. The one who would answer: “Drink and I’ll
also provide water for your camels,” would be the one
chosen for Yitzchak.
Rivka, the daughter of Betuel (Avraham’s
nephew), answered Eliezer properly, and was taken
with her family’s permission to be Yitzchak’s wife.
(From Rivka’s answer some learn that man should
drink before his animals, even though man must feed
his animals before he himself eats.)
The parsha lists Avraham’s descendents from his wife
Ketura (some claim that Ketura is another name for
Hagar, and others explain that she was a third wife), as
well as Yishmael’s descendents.
Avraham lived 175 years, and was buried by
Yitzchak and Yishmael in the Cave of the Machpela.
This Shabbat, Jews from around the world will be gathering in Chevron. The highlight of the Shabbat will be in the morning,
when the Jewish residents and their guests will gather for tefillah in Me’arat Hamachpeila (the Cave of the Machpeila). There,
they’ll read from the Torah about the purchase of the cave. The same section will be read from the Torah all around the world, but
those in Chevron will have the privilege of standing on the very spot that we’ll all be reading about. In a way, they will represent
all of us when they gather to reaffirm their dedication to the city of our fathers and to Eretz Yisrael. Mitzvah of the Week will
focus on the nature of our ties to Chevron. In Middah of the Week we'll learn how the kindness that we read of in Parshat
Hashavua effects Jewish life in surprising ways. Shabbat Shalom!
Efron’s field in Machpeila adjoining
buried his wife Sara in the cave of
cave became the uncontested
Rav Yudan the son of Simon said: There are
three places that the nations of the world cannot claim
were stolen from them by Bnei Yisrael , because their
purchase is recorded in the Tana”ch (Bible). The three
places are: The Cave of the Machpeila, the site of the
Beit Hamikdash, and the burial place of Yosef.
Avraham purchased the Cave of the Machpeila.
The site of the Beit Hamikdash was purchased by King
David. Yaakov purchased Yosef’s burial place in

…We arrived in Chevron shortly before Shabbat, and
went to pray in the Beit Knesset of the Sepharadim. We
walked through very narrow streets; like those found in all
ancient cities... The houses were also very plain, and yet the
city had a magical effect on its [Jewish] residents. Their love
for the Land of their fathers had a strong effect on their
hearts and enlivened them more than all the palaces of kings
could have. They delight in the study of Torah all day.
…This land is very blessed. Vineyards, orchards of
olives and trees of the finest fruit in the world abound here,
more than in all the cities of Europe. I had a strong desire to
build a house next to the well where we were staying. I could
sit there through all seasons of the year and enjoy the beauty
of the stunning view and green hills. I have never been
anywhere that was as pleasing to my eyes as this place; close
to the burial sites of our fathers, Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov,
Sara, Rivka and Leah. We drink water from Yaakov's well…
Chessed תישילש הדועס
Eliezier used acts of kindness- chessed, to find a
prospective wife for Yitzchak. Chessed has been an important
part of Jewish life from the days of Avraham Avinu through our
times...

Rabbi Chaim Dov Roth ל"צז was reviewing a daf of
Gemara in his Sukka in the city of Bnei Brak, when a knock
announced the arrival of a man in Chassidic garb. Rabbi Roth
didn't recognize the man, but invited him into his Sukka, offered
him a drink, and then asked how he could assist him. The
Chassidic guest explained that came as a messenger of the
Klausenberg Rebbe, the Grand Rabbi of the Klausenberg
Chassidim, who would like to meet Rabbi Roth - immediately.
Rabbi Roth was very surprised. He was a 26 year old
rabbinical student. "Why does the Rebbe want to meet me?
I'm just a plain Jew!" he asked.
The chassid answered that he is just a messenger and
can't answer that question but there is a taxi waiting outside the
apartment to take them on the hour-long drive to the Rebbe's
home. "I'm sure the Rebbe will answer your question", the
messenger replied.
Not wishing to turn down the request of such a great
rabbi, Rabbi Roth explained to his family that he is making a
trip to Netanya, and joined the Chassidic messenger in the taxi.
Rabbi Yekutiel Yehuda Halberstam ל"צז, the
Klausenberg Rebbe, greeted his guest as if he was a very
important person.
"How can I help the Rebbe?" asked Rabbi Roth.
The Rebbe replied, "I am opening a hospital here in
Netanya. The wealthy Laniado family is funding the hospital
which will open soon. The hospital needs a rabbi, and I want
P ars ha Pr im er C HA Y E I SARA 57 73 2
you to be the hospital's rabbi."
Rabbi Roth was stunned. When he regained
his composure he said, "For a hospital you need a
rabbi with lots of experience in deciding difficult
questions of halacha. I'm just a young rabbinical
student, with very little experience in such matters!"
The Rebbe smiled and replied, "I think you are
wrong. I've been considering this issue for several
months, and in the beginning I agreed with the
thoughts that you just expressed. After a few weeks of
contemplation, I changed my mind. It's true that the
rabbi will have to decide difficult questions, and will
need to be a competent halachic authority. However,
to be the rabbi of a hospital there is a trait that is much
more important. The rabbi needs to be a baalchessed
(one who does a lot of chessed- kindness). A
baal-chessed will have the love and patience to care
for the sick and their every need, and will be able to
empathize with the hard working and dedicated
doctors and nurses. The doctors will respect such a
man, and follow his halachic guidelines."
Rabbi Roth was still confused, "I understand
what you are saying, but why me?"
"I have been searching for a man of chessed for
a while. Recently I heard about a very sick man in
Bnei Brak, who was all but forgotten by all of his
friends, except for one. That one friend visited the sick
man six times a day, each day, for months without
missing a day. You are that man, and I want you to be
the rabbi of the hospital," the Rebbe concluded.
Based on Barchi Nafshi, stories told by Rabbi Y. Zilberstein
shlit"a.
The Klausenberg Rebbe was a holocaust survivor whose entire
family was destroyed in the holocaust. He remarried and rebuilt
his family and his Chassidic court in the United States and in
Netanya, Israel.
