ANNUAL REPORT
Inspiring minds.
Improving learning.
You can see and hear it every day. Classrooms and meeting
spaces at UCLA Lab School hum with thoughtful activity, focused
on finding the best ways to support children as they learn and grow.
That culture of active thinking and learning, of connecting teachers,
students and researchers to exchange ideas and build understanding,
is one of the things that sets us apart.
As adults model intellectual and creative risk, children learn to
challenge themselves and delve deeper into their studies. As
children express their understanding of curricular concepts,
teachers and researchers listen, reflect and respond to create
learning opportunities that tap the potential of every child.
We are proud to be part of a community of people who are excited
about the future and what it can hold for all children.
Your support helps us to go further and reach higher in these efforts
every year.
Together with you, we form a circle of curiosity, experience and
understanding that transforms children’s lives.
Dear UCLA Lab School Families and Friends,
You don’t have to look far to see examples of the value of collaboration and problem
solving in today’s world. From politics to the economy to the environment, every day
presents new challenges and opportunities that require both leadership and the
collective creative thinking of sharp minds.
UCLA Lab School helps foster these qualities in both children and adults. Our
hands-on, minds-on curriculum challenges children to explore complex questions
and build deep understanding of curricular content. Our professional development
programs and collaborative culture inspire teachers to pursue their intellectual interests
and hone their skills. This report highlights important ways your support made a
difference in our work in 2009-2010.
Two projects took teachers on extraordinary learning journeys, delving into the
resources of the Library of Congress and doing field research at the site of an active
volcano in Nicaragua. Back in Los Angeles, we launched a new outreach program that
attracted more than 200 educators from 40 schools.
Throughout the year, we remained financially strong despite a turbulent economy. We
kept financial aid high, allowing us to keep up our student diversity. We also created a
strong financial model that will carry us forward into the future.
All these accomplishments were made possible through your support. I especially
want to thank the contributors to the 2009-2010 Annual Fund—you helped us reach
our highest total ever. And together with Board of Advisors Chair Eric Schiffer, I want to
thank our board members for their hard work and their commitment to our school.
As I move on to pursue my goal of founding charter schools in the urban core of Los
Angeles, I am grateful for the many things I have learned from all of you. With Norma
Silva as the new principal, I know I leave this school in extraordinarily capable hands.
The future is bright for all our children. On behalf of our entire school community, I offer
my deepest appreciation to you for supporting the work of UCLA Lab School.
Best regards,
Jim Kennedy
Program Highlights from This Year
Investing in Teachers
With support from the Caro and Grand families,
teacher Genevieve D’Arcy joined an Earthwatch expedition
to Masaya, Nicaragua, to study the impact of volcanic
emissions on the environment. She’s drawing on that
experience as she works with colleagues to develop
improved methods for teaching children about earth
science and conservation.
Sparking Insight and Imagination
Together with the Cotsen Family Foundation, we
launched the Cotsen Library of Congress Primary
Source Project, which will help teachers design
high-quality instruction that encourages
active learning and improves critical thinking
skills. Group leaders kicked off the program with
a trip to Washington, D.C. to explore materials
at the library called the world’s preeminent
reservoir of knowledge.
Harnessing the Best of Digital Learning
We increased our use of SMART Board technology to include
90% of classrooms in the Primary through Upper levels.
UCLA Lab School students of all ages use technology as a
tool to show what they know and deepen their understanding
of the curriculum. From Early Childhood students using Pixie
to illustrate plant germination, to Upper students creating
videos about the science of weather, our program continues
to serve as a model for how age-appropriate tools can help
children increase their learning power.
Engaging Local Educators
Educator Days, a new outreach program, brought
more than 200 educators from 40 schools to observe
instruction in literacy, project-based learning, CGI
math and learning in two languages. The program
offers a unique opportunity to see constructivist
teaching methods in action. As one attendee said,
To observe incredibly proficient professionals
expressing their craft was powerful!
Conducting
Research that Benefits Children
Researchers and teachers continued work on projects
to help educators better understand children’s learning
and development. Just some of the areas they explored
this year were learning math through a problem-oriented
approach, using inquiry and data modeling in science,
and understanding cultural geography through the
evolution of popular music.
Our student ethnicity
commitment to diversity:
