Program Highlights from This Year
Investing in Teachers
With support from the Caro and Grand families,
teacher Genevieve D’Arcy joined an Earthwatch expedition
to Masaya, Nicaragua, to study the impact of volcanic
emissions on the environment. She’s drawing on that
experience as she works with colleagues to develop
improved methods for teaching children about earth
science and conservation.
Sparking Insight and Imagination
Together with the Cotsen Family Foundation, we
launched the Cotsen Library of Congress Primary
Source Project, which will help teachers design
high-quality instruction that encourages
active learning and improves critical thinking
skills. Group leaders kicked off the program with
a trip to Washington, D.C. to explore materials
at the library called the world’s preeminent
reservoir of knowledge.
Harnessing the Best of Digital Learning
We increased our use of SMART Board technology to include
90% of classrooms in the Primary through Upper levels.
UCLA Lab School students of all ages use technology as a
tool to show what they know and deepen their understanding
of the curriculum. From Early Childhood students using Pixie
to illustrate plant germination, to Upper students creating
videos about the science of weather, our program continues
to serve as a model for how age-appropriate tools can help
children increase their learning power.
