Wanted woman
What began as a traffic
chase through Crockett
and the southwestern part
of Houston County with
officers from four agencies
in pursuit of a wanted
The suspect, Wendy
17-year-old children in the
vehicle with her during
the pursuit, according to
Vandals destroy items for
new Kalin’s Center facility
By Lynda Jones
Editor-in-Chief
Weekend vandals broke
into the Old Crockett High
School building on South
7 th St., destroying thousands
of dollars of items being
stored for the new Kalin’s
Center facility.
The former CHS building
currently is owned by First
Methodist Church.
Rev. Patrick Evans said
he believes the break-in occurred
Sunday night.
The church’s senior pastor
said criminal mischief at
the site was a problem during
spring break and since
school has been out for the
summer, pointing to broken
out windows on the second
floor above the doors.
This time, the vandals
dumped printer ink toner on
the floors and all over the
Kalin’s Center items.
The perpetrators left the
room in total disarray, leaving
those who are dedicated
to helping abused and
sexually assaulted children
scratching their heads and
wondering why anyone
would do such a thing.
Have a safe, happy 4 th of July
By Clyde Black
It’s the 4 th of July and we live in the United States of
America. It doesn’t get any better than that! We have freedoms
that others yearn for and can’t even comprehend. We
have opportunities that are available. I think sometimes
we take these things for granted and I hope that today we
are renewed in our appreciation of our rights as citizens of
these United States.
I don’t intend for this to be a solemn and seriously reflective
article. We have our Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day
dedicated to those who have sacrificed to ensure our rights
and freedoms. I’ve always thought as July 4 th as a fun day
of celebration! To me this holiday is to be a festive time
to celebrate with friends and family. Certainly it’s another
excuse for us to indulge in brisket, ice cream and of course,
I know many people have lost loved ones recently and
the holidays are tough on those families. Many in our
midst are hurting and sad. I hope they are comforted and
know that their friends pray that some joy comes to them
and their friends are concerned for them.
We are very blessed here in Houston County. At least I
must say that I am very blessed. I live in a community of
folks who share my family values. I live in a community
where people openly show kindness and friendship to others.
I live in a community where most young people are
polite and courteous. To my knowledge our elected officials
and government employees, Democrats and Republicans,
try to do the right things for the citizens of Houston
On and off the farm -- with Horace M c Queen
By Horace M c Queen
Contributing Columnist
horace@valornet.com
While some farmers are happy with full stock tanks and
pastures full of grass, others aren’t so lucky. In parts of
Houston and Anderson Counties the drought continues
full force. By the first of July, we would normally have received
just over 20-inches of rainfall. Right now, it’s more
like 12 inches or less. Our rain gauges show 11.8 inches at
our Latexo farm.
It seems funny to talk about drought and then look at
the pastures around us full of grass. Saving grace for many
farmers is that cattle numbers are way down. Some decent
grass-growing rains came in April and May and growing
conditions were ideal. Lots of hay being made - with the
question of what it will be fed to, or where it will be sold.
We are going to end up with more hay than needed, but
freight to move excess hay to other parts of Texas is costly.
If barns are available, take a look at putting up enough hay
for this coming winter - and the one after that!
We took a four-day vacation last week and with a daughter
and granddaughter flew to Washington, D.C. We rented
a car at Dulles Airport then headed downtown to see the
Capitol and White House. Our granddaughter wanted to
tour the White House - but no dice!
President Obama, in a fit of anger, declared the White
House off limits to tours. Thousands of parents and their
children had planned for months to visit D.C. and tour the
White House this summer. Now “poof”, Obama is in con-
trol. Obama blames the closing of the White House to
tourists on the Republicans who wouldn’t go along with
some of his massive spending proposals.
Regardless of the reason behind his “executive decision”,
it was a malicious decision by the President. The
White House does not belong to a sitting President. It belongs
to the American taxpayer and many of us will long
remember this act by Obama and his liberal “give away
America” teammates.
Meantime D.C. looks more like an armed camp than a
free moving city. Law enforcement officers were everywhere
in the city and many tourist attractions had streets
leading to them cordoned off. We tried and tried to get to
a location near the White House for picture-taking, but
with the streets closed there was no place to capture “our
house” in the camera lens.
One day was spent in visiting Gettysburg, the scene of
one of the great battles of the Civil War. We also toured
Lancaster County, PA and saw several of the Amish and
Mennonite farms. On our way back to our hotel - in Virginia
near the airport - our road map showed a detour
route we had to try. Some twisting back roads led to an
old-time ferry named the “Jubal Early” that crosses the
Potomac River from Maryland to Virginia. According to
the historians, a ferry has been in operation at this river
crossing since 1817. The ferry was one of the trip highlights
and we have plenty of photos to prove the ferry
does exist!
Till next time, that’s --30--
Enjoy fireworks safely
As we approach the July
4 th holiday, people across
our country are gearing up
to celebrate our nation’s independence
with their families
and friends. Ensuring a
safe celebration should be at
the top of everyone’s party
list.
Independence Day is a
holiday with unique safety
challenges – namely, fireworks.
Americans have
enjoyed the thrill of fireworks
for centuries, but
the fireworks, firecrackers,
sparklers and rockets that
often appear around July
4 th can be very dangerous,
causing severe eye injuries,
burns, loss of limbs and,
even, death. According to
the National Fire Protection
Association, more than 60
percent of all fireworks injuries
occur around July 4 th .
In fact, the U.S. Consumer
Product and Safety Commission
reported that more
than 5,000 people were
treated for fireworks-related
injuries in hospital emergency
rooms in July last
year. More than 70 percent
of injuries were to the eyes,
head, face, ears, hands and
fingers. Six people died as
a result of fireworks-related
injuries.
“The Fourth of July is
a wonderful opportunity
to spend time with family
and friends celebrating our
country, its history, and our
service men and women”
said Christi Watkins, CCO
of Palestine Regional Medical
Center (PRMC).
“Unfortunately, emergency
rooms across the country
see a spike in the number
of patients due to fireworks
injuries every July. We urge
everyone in the community
to take precautions to ensure
their safety and the safety of
their children this year.”
PMRC urges residents
to refrain from using consumer
fireworks at home.
Fireworks safety begins by
leaving the fireworks shows
to the professionals.
occurred at private celebrations.
The safest way to enjoy
fireworks is to attend a
public display conducted by
trained professionals. After
a fireworks display, do not
pick up or attempt to relight
fireworks.
Palestine Regional also
recommends against the use
of sparklers. These seemingly
harmless sticks can
cause very serious injuries.
The tip of a sparkler burns
at a temperature of more
than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit,
which is six-times the
temperature of boiling water
and hot enough to cause
third-degree burns.
SHARE CONTINUES BUSY SUMMER SCHEDULE, FROM PAGE A1
Gardeners and other local gardeners who are sharing their
A summer feeding program for Grapeland youngsters helps
to fi ll the gap for food when school is not in session, according
to Ainsworth. Twice-a-month deliveries just for kids in
the Grapeland area is made possible by the generosity of
Houston County donors and the efforts of Cliff Coldiron.
“We probably could have raised $10,000,” she said. “We
need money for our counseling program.”
McCall said, “It breaks my heart. I don’t understand people
that damage other people’s property. I feel so violated.
Kalin’s Center is my ‘baby’ and they hurt my ‘baby’. I’m
really angry right now.”
Evans said he also does not understand why people do such
destructive things.
“It shows there’s still sin in the world,” he said.
Crockett Police Department Public Information Offi cer/
Detective Clayton Smith said that, also over the weekend,
someone spray painted a vulgar word on the concession
stand at the Junior League Baseball fi eld concession stand.
“We suspect that the same person(s) (vandalized) both
places. Anyone with information is urged to contact the
Crockett Police Department,” Smith said.
Evans said vandalism of the old school building is such
a problem, the church posted signs on the building’s doors
offering a standing $100 reward leading to the arrest and
conviction of anyone who vandalizes the building. The information
must be provided to the Crockett Police Department.
There is no insurance coverage on the lost/damaged Kalin’s
Center items, or on the old school building, McCall said.
Kalin’s Center is a Children’s Advocacy Center serving
both Houston and Trinity Counties.
Donations can be mailed to Kalin’s Center, P. O. Box 901,
Crockett, TX 75835, or call 936-545-9455. The Kalin’s
Center is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt nonprofi t organization so
your donation is applicable for IRS tax credit. Their tax-exempt
DETCOG, FROM PAGE A1
Acting on the recommendation of DETCOG’s Economic
Development and Hurricane Disaster Recovery committees,
the board approved the fi rst Forgivable Loan for Economic
Development.
The $300,000 commitment is to be used for the expansion
of Dynamic Instruments.
The manufacturing company proposes to create eight new
jobs to benefi t low income households.
Currently, the company is a small operation with only Lee,
another full-time employee and a part-time employee.
Lee said most of the past fi ve years has been spent establishing
the company with the oilfi eld industry.
“We mostly do oilfi eld-related work, but we want to try to
branch out into other areas, such as aircraft, aerospace industries
and maybe hospitals,” Lee said in a phone interview
Monday, July 1.
“We’re really anxious to grow and add several employees,”
he said.
Lee explained the approval by the DETCOG board of the
Forgivable Loan for Economic Development is very important
to his group, and they expect it to help as they pursue
additional funding options.
They currently are in small quarters, and the $300,000
should help to purchase additional equipment.
“We’re very excited,” Lee said.
According to Lee, they are in the process of negotiating
another loan through a bank to obtain funds for construction
of a building.
One of their goals, Lee said, ultimately is to build their new
shop in the Crockett Industrial Park.
Right now, he and his partners are taking it one step at a
time.
ENJOY FIREWORKS SAFELY, FROM PAGE A1 •Never point or throw fi reworks at another person or carry
If you are at a celebration that includes consumer fi reworks,
PRMC encourages you to take the following precautions:
•Never allow young children to play with or ignite fi reworks,
and ensure that an adult is always present to supervise
fi reworks activities.
•Keep a bucket of water or hose close by in case of a fi re.
•Avoid fi reworks that are packaged in brown paper because
this is often a signal of fi reworks that are strictly for professional
displays.
•Light fi reworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
•Never place any part of your body directly over a fi reworks
device when lighting the fuse.
fi reworks in your pocket.
•Never shoot off fi reworks in metal or glass containers.
•Never attempt to re-light or pick up fi reworks that have
not ignited fully.
•After fi reworks complete their burning, douse the fi reworks
with water from a bucket or hose before discarding it
to prevent a trash fi re.
If anyone you know does sustain injuries at an Independence
Day celebration, get them medical attention immediately.
Kim Spellman recently led a drive to collect fans for the
elderly. So far, SHARE has distributed 41 fans to persons
over age 65 in this area, Ainsworth stated.
“We have more fans to distribute for the remainder of the
hot summer, and those people who have fans to share are
invited to drop them off at SHAR. during our working hours,
Monday, Wednesday or Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 12
noon. We continue to receive clothing, household goods,
books and ‘Garage Sale’ left-overs for free distribution. Our
volunteers are hanging summer clothes every day and boxing
up winter clothes for use when the seasons change,” Ainsworth
said.
The School Supplies Drive is well-underway. Registration
to receive school supplies was made through the school
counselors at each of the Houston County schools, and was
completed May 31. Nearly 400 students are registered and
will be provided with basic school supplies for the 2013-
2014 year.
Ainsworth said the School Supplies Chairpersons, Henry
and Sarah Clines, are soliciting donations for the supplies at
this time. In July, they will purchase supplies, and distribution
is set for August in the communities involved. Any supplies
not picked up will be taken to the schools for the use of
students who do not have supplies.
SHARE also receives some furniture, providing it is in
good condition. Furniture is provided to persons who get
burned out or to women having to move out of abusive situations.
All donations should be made when SHARE is open.
All items left outside the fence usually are discarded.
Those who wish to make contributions to S.H.A.R.E. or to
designate contributions for school supplies, may mail them
to P. O. Box 1121, Crockett, TX 75835. Any inquiries may
be phoned to 936-544-5600.
“If no one answers, please leave a message and your call
will be returned at our earliest convenience,” Ainsworth
said. “We are pleased in the summer to have a number of
young people volunteering at SHARE. There is room for
other volunteers on a regular basis. We especially need
persons to help make the deliveries in the rural areas of the
county once a month.”
“Offi cers pursued the vehicle south on SH 19 to Lovelady
and then onto Farm Road 1280 west toward Austonio,”
Smith stated.
According to Smith, after the driver arrived at SH 21 West,
she turned left towards Madisonville.
She then traveled a short distance before turning around
and heading back east on SH 21 toward Crockett, Smith reported.
“The pursuit continued into Crockett at which time troopers
with the Texas Department of Public Safety used spike
The vehicle came to a stop on Loop 304 and Bibbs was
taken into custody.
“It was then determined that Bibbs also had her 15 - and
17-year-old children in the vehicle with her during the pursuit,”
Smith stated.
Bibbs was booked into the Houston County Jail and charged
Welcome Guide
to
Houston County!
The Annual Welcome Guide is published by the Houston County
Courier and is the most requested magazine in the area.
The Welcome Guide is filled with beneficial information about
Community Events, Clubs, Schools, Hospitals, Local Businesses and more!
It answers questions more frequently asked by people moving new to this
area. Find out who to call and where to go to get things done...as well as all
the reasons why this is a great place to live or visit!
The Welcome Guide is the most effective and far reaching advertising tool
available in this area. Why? Because, not only will it be inserted into the
Houston County Courier in August, but it is also distributed throughout the
year on a quarterly basis to numerous businesses, and other organizations.
Our Advertising Department is ready to
assist you with your total ad design and
layout needs for no additional charge,
which has always been our policy.
