P & C AGM
Oakenden’s Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday February 5 th and we now have our
office bearers for 2013:
President: Tamara Boland
Vice President: Teneile Merkel
Secretary: Linda Matsen
Treasurer: Alison Bugeja
Vice Treasurer: Michael Bugeja
It is great to see a fully filled executive: something much larger organisations with far more
people to draw upon sometimes fail to achieve. Application forms for being members of the
P & C are attached to this newsletter and we ask all parents to fill these in and return them please.
Grounds Maintenance
As a fund raising initiative, the Oakenden P & C undertakes the grounds maintenance of the
school. The mower, whipper snipper and fuel are all supplied by the school and parents commit to
a month of mowing. A 2013 mowing roster was sent home last year but there are a few gaps
which we need to fill. New parents will be inducted to the task so they can undertake it safely.
Please find the mowing roster below and indicate your willingness to add your name to the list on
the return at the end of the roster. Thanks to those parents who have already volunteered their
time.
School Captains
Congratulations to Emma Bugeja and bailey Leggatt who
received their school captain badges from Mr Ted
Malone, Minister for Mirani, on Friday. We are confident
that students will be fine school leaders and will be
models of “the Oakenden Way” making fair choices,
smart choices and safe choices.
Emma and Bailey will be meeting other school leaders at
a GRIP leadership event next Monday.
Social Night
The P & C is planning a social get together for all school and wider community members on Friday March 15 th . Firm plans
for the evening have yet to be made but tennis or netball have been proposed. Please try to keep this date free for a fun community
evening.
Playgroup
The Oakenden Community Playgroup will continue to meet on the first and third Fridays of the school year. This is an initiative
aimed to not only provide quality social interactions for the parents and young children of our community, but also
to showcase our lovely school in the hope of future enrolments. Please spread the word on our behalf: it really is a lovely
morning and the parents who come are very positive and welcoming.
Bunnings Sausage Sizzle
A major P & C fund raiser for the year is the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle and we have been allocated Sunday February 24 th to
man the stall. Helpers are needed from setup time at 8:30 until pack down at 2:00. Please indicate on the return whether you
can help and what time you are available.
Tuckshop
This year tuckshop will revert to once a month. It will still coincide with Playgroup days and so will be held on the first
Friday of each month at little lunch (10:15 am). Parents will be given plenty of notice of the menu and costs associated.
Parents are needed to volunteer for tuckshop which involves either cooking food for sale (eg chicken and gravy rolls, mince
rolls, tacos, ham and salad wraps) or collecting it from a shop for sale (eg pies, pizza, sausage rolls, subway).
Please find the tuckshop roster below and indicate your willingness to add your name to the list on the return at the end of
the roster. Thanks to that parent who has already volunteered her time.
FROM THE SPORTS DESK
Welcome back to another exciting year of sports. I
have returned from maternity leave and am looking
forward to inspiring and working with students again
this year. The year kicks off with numerous sporting
trials throughout semester one, these are listed below.
This term School and House Captains will be working
with me to prepare for our school cross country
carnival where we select 10 – 13 year olds who will
represent the school at the Sarina District Cross
Country early term two. More information will follow in
the coming weeks about this event.
Sports trials are open to students turning 11 or 12
years old this year, some trials are open to 10 year
olds. Unfortunately, students turning 13 in 2013 are
ineligible to trial for primary school sports. We run 13
year olds through cross country and athletics to see if
they qualify for the secondary schools trials.
Students who have experience/talent in one of the
sports listed below and wish to try out for the Sarina
District Team will need to see Mrs Howorth to express
their interest and receive more information. Selected
students will represent the Sarina District at Mackay
District Trials.
