GIVING BLOOD?
Today, we are going to depart from our utual column nuitnal
The Lowell Rotary it, once again, conducting a communis
blood drive on August 27. 1986 from 3-1 p.m. at the Lowell
Middle School Cafeteria We hope that you will teriously consider
giving a part of younelf to iiuure that life goes on for aiKxht,
All Kent County residents depend on volunteer blood donors y*
only S% of all Kent County residents donate blood!
Ninety-three to one hundred and thirty units of blood are needed
daily in (he Kent County area and 73* of the general populaiu.n
will need a transfusion within their lifetime. The blood you donate
can be used in many difTerent ways. Approximately 5-8 units are
required for each open heart surgery and almost 100 of these
surgeries are performed in the Grand Rapids area monthly 1 Up to
12 donors a week are needed just to supply blood for babies m
(he neo-natal unit at Butterworth Hospital. Sometimes, massive
amounts of blood are needed for one patient. Sixty seven units
were needed for a wounded police officer recently in Grand Rapids 1
A single unit of blood can be separated into different components
such as red cells, plasma, or platelets. Red cells are used to replace
lost blood in surgery, accidents or in patients with anemia Plasma
is used in patients with bums or shock, and platelets are used in
patients with bleeding disorders especially in certain types of
cancer.
Donating blood is really quite simple. It takes about 7-10 minutes
to actually remove the blood. You'll be gone from the office or
home for less than an hour. You are eligible to donate blood if
you are "healthy" and are between the ages of 17 and 76. You
must weigh at least 100 pounds. You may donate blood as often
as every 8 weeks. Persons who have hepatitis. Mood diseases,
heart surgery, chronic lung disease, cancers or diabetes requiring
insulin are not eligible to donate blood.
If you are thinking about donating blood, remember this, regardless
of who you are or where you live, when you need blood
you will receive it because thoughtful caring people, like you.
have donated regularly to save lives.!
State Senator
Dick Posthumus
Public school funding in
Michigan is a real and critical
problem. The difference between
the money provided by the state's
highest spending and lowest
spending school districts has increased
dramatically over the
past 20 years, according to the
state Board of Education's financial
data survey for 1984-85. In
1968-69. for example, the difference
was $774 per student between
high-spending and lowspending
school districts. The
gap was $1,902 in 1978-79.
$3,004 in 1983-84. and more
than $3,650 last year.
It's our duty to provide an
equitable education for all students,
no matter how rich or poor
that little white church on the
their school districts are. Senate
Bills 837 and 838, and companion
legislation recentlf introduced
in the state House (House
Bills 5704 and 5705). would
overhaul Michigan's school
financing system and bring
equity to per-pupil student spening.
A public hearing will be held
July 30 at the Stale Capitol to
begin debate on these proposals.
The proposed legislative reform
package would increase
overall spending on K-12
schools coming through the
state, reduce differences in
school district per-pupil spending.
and ensure uniform and
equitable assessment of large
commercial and industrial properties.
Local districts' funding is now
tied primarily to its property tax
base. School districts with a
major manufacturing facility or
other major tax-paying facilities
can <strong>keep</strong> property tax rates low
for homeowners and still raise
more than enough money to operate
their schools. Propertypoor
school districts, however,
can have equal or even higher
property tax rates but raise much
less money. The Birmingham
school district, for example,
levied a 30-mill property tax rate
and spent $5,562 per pupil in fiscal
year 1985-86. In contrast, the
Martin school district was only
able to provide $2,394 per pupil
levying the same mills.
The major component of the
new plan is creation of regional
impact properties with market
values of $20 million or more.
Half the tax revenues from these
properties would be collected by
the state and distributed to local
districts through the state's general
school aid formula. They
would be taxed at the state's average
tax rate.
Rates would increase on some
properties, remain unchanged on
some and decrease on others.
Most school districts would be
helped financially under the
proposal, while many others
would be relatively unaffected.
About 15 percent of our 569 districts
would lose money.
"This is my father," I say with
pride whenever I introduce Dad.
To me he has always been a hero.
There is always fun when Dad
is around. His sparse gray hair
was once bushy and curly. His
of his youth. It is wonderful
to have good parents!
It's wonderful, too, to "biag"
Lowell Area Schools Food Service Program
Another summer is almost gone and it will soon be time for the school bells to start ringing again. We will serve lunches the first day
of school on Tuesday, August 26,1986. We will not raise the price of lunches at this time. We hope this holds true' for the entire school
year. It depends on federal reimbursement, food and labor costs. The prices again this year will be 85c in the Alto, Bushnell and
Rundman Schools and 90c in the Middle and Sr. High Schools. These prices indude milk. Adult lunches will be $1.45 In all schools.
Milk alone, for both students and adults, will be 25c
We again invite the students from St. Mary's School to join us for lunch in the Bushnell School Cafeteria.
Students may purchase lunch tickets every moming in their rooms at the Alto, Bushnell and Rundman/Riverside buildings, and in the
Middle School cafetorium, before school starts. St. Mary's and Sr. High students may pay when they go through the lunch lines. Students
may, if they wish, bring their money for the whole week on Monday moming in all the schools. This is not mandatory but will provide
this service for the parents if they wish to take advantage of it.
Free and reduced price lunches are available upon proper application to families who qualify for the program. Free milk is not available
as there is no federal reimbursement for milk. A letter to the parents and an application is induded in this publication. Because of strict
federal regulations the application is more detailed and must be made out in full before students may receive free or reduced priced
lunches. Applications will also be available in all school offices. Parents who think they may be eligible must have their application in
by Friday, August 15.1966. in order to know if their children are eligible tor the first day of school.
The cooks of the Lowell Area Schools will still offer good, nutritious meals with many choices every day. The students may choose
all five components of the meal (protein, bread, vegetables, fruit and milk) or as few as three of the items and we will still be able to
count it for federal reimbursement. We have found this eliminates plate waste. If cost allows, we will continue to bake our own bread,
dinner rolls, cookies, casseroles, etc. from scratch." We offer fresh fruits every day and fresh vegetables at least three times a week.
We will offer a minimum of two entrees and a chefs salad, with a choice of cheese or meat, every day in the Middle and Sr. High
Schools. In the Sr. High School, students may. if they wish, pick out individually priced items from our a la carte line. This, of course,
costs more than the unit priced school lunch which induddes milk. We sell ice cream, milk, orange drink and fresh fruits at our snack
bar which will be open in the moming and after school. In addition, at noon we sell hot sandwiches, pizzas and chefs salads.
We do not sell carbonated drinks, candy, gum or potato chips in our schools.
It is because of the sincere dedication of our 24 cooks and van driver that we are able to serve good nutritious food, at the low prices,
to our Lowell Area Schools students.
Parents having any questions about School Food Service should call Mrs. Marilyn Bovee at 897-8415.
