Bobbi Grann has burst onto the DSU scene by soar-
ing into 5th place in the nation in the women’s rodeo
All-Around title. For those of you unfamiliar with ro-
deo, to qualify for the All-Around title you must com-
pete in a number of rodeo events and it just so happens
that Bobbi, who is a great athlete anyway, is a master
of many, having also lifted her DSU team into 2nd place
in the nation. In addition, she is pretty, friendly, very
down-to-earth and a North Dakota native who should
make North Dakotans very proud. Read on and learn
more about her. I guarantee, you’re going to love her.
Where were you born and raised? Born in Devils Lake,
N.D .and raised near Sheyenne, N.D. on a farm/ranch
with cattle and horses.
Who makes up your family? Mom: Donna, Dad: John,
Brothers: Ben (22) who is a senior at NDSU who also par-
ticipates in college rodeo and Johnny (7), Sister: Lacey
(16).
What were the activities that you participated in when
you were growing up? I basically grew up on the back of
a horse. I have been riding my whole life and it is my
favorite thing to do. In high school I participated in vol-
leyball, track, basketball and high school rodeo. I love
sports and have always been involved in them.
How did you come to attend DSU? I was at Lake Region
State College in Devils Lake the last two years playing
basketball and after I earned my two year degree there I
wanted to rodeo. Dickinson is well known for its rodeo
program and I have always wanted to live out west, so I
decided to give Dickinson a try and I am really enjoying it so far!
Now for those of us who aren't exactly “in the know” when it comes to Ro-
deo events, what do you do? Barrel Racing: Its a race around 3 barrels in a
clover leaf pattern. Fastest time wins! Breakaway Roping: This is a very quick
event that takes two to three seconds, all you have to do is rope a calf. Team
Roping: This is a partner event, one contestant ropes the horns of a steer and
then a partner follows behind and ropes the heels. Goat Tying: In this event
you run to the goat high-speed on your horse, jump off your horse when it is
still running and tie up three legs of the goat.
Which is your favorite event to compete in? My favorite event is goat tying
because I have been doing it the longest and it is very thrilling and competi-
tive.
Which is the most challenging? The most challenging event for me would be
either one of the two roping events because I still have a lot to learn about
roping and am not as good at it as I would like to be.
Have you ever had a favorite horse? My favorite horse is my barrel racing
horse named Cooper. He is talented, beautiful, friendly and has a quirky
personality that people quickly catch on to just from being
around him.
What do you study here at DSU? I am majoring in Natural Re-
source Management
What do you hope to do after you graduate? My goal when I
graduate is to not have to work inside in an office everyday. I
just want to be outside!
What do you think is the largest misconception about
“cowgirls” is? I think a misconception would be that cowgirls
are rugged and rough. But there are actually a lot of really cute,
“blinged out” accessories and clothes that we wear when we
ride horse. We like to look good and have our horses looking
good as well.
What do you think about just before you compete. For exam-
ple, right before you run barrels? Before I compete I always try
to just relax and clear my mind. I try to think about positive
things and imagine my runs just how I would like them to go. For
example, before I barrel race I try to think about running a
perfect pattern and I try to stay very calm because that also
keeps my horse calm.
ample, right before you run barrels? Before I compete I
Do you plan to continue to rodeo long into the future? Yes.
I plan on hopefully owning horses my whole life and continu-
ing to compete for many years. I'd like to maybe share it with
my kids someday like my parents did for me.
You are currently 5th in the nation in the All-Around ti-
tle. That’s big stuff. Did you expect this at this point? No I
didn't’ expect this. I really didn’t know what to expect com-
ing into this year, but I'm just very thankful for how things
how things have been going and I hope they con-
tinue to go well. I have amazing horses and great
family, friends, teammates, and coaches. I’m very
blessed.
What is your favorite part of rodeo? My favorite
part of rodeo is the competition. I also appreciate
the relationships you develop with your team, your
horses, and the friendships you make with others
from other schools that you wouldn’t have had
otherwise.
What is your favorite thing about DSU? My favor-
ite thing about DSU is the variety of different peo-
ple and activities. It seems like anyone could find a
place to fit in here. Everyone is so friendly and pos-
itive, its a great environment.
If you could have one wish fulfilled what would it
be? I wish there was no such thing as homework,
haha!
