<strong>PINAN</strong> <strong>GODAN</strong><br />

<strong>Th<strong>is</strong></strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>last</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>most</strong> <strong>advanced</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>five</strong> <strong>basic</strong> Pinan series. The kata has twenty nine movements,<br />

<strong>and</strong> d<strong>is</strong>plays defense against armed opponents. The striking <strong>and</strong> blocking techniques are put toge<strong>the</strong>r with<br />

quick body maneuvering <strong>and</strong> rapid transition from stance to stance. Back h<strong>and</strong> block - ha<strong>is</strong>hu uke High<br />

augmented forearm block - jodan morote ude uke Downward x block - gedan juju uke Sweeping<br />

block .- nagashi uke Downward knife h<strong>and</strong> block - gedan shuto uke Downward spearh<strong>and</strong> strike- gedan<br />

nukite uchi Double block - (morote uke) gedan bari uke-jodan ude uke Hook punch - kagi zuki Stamping<br />

kick - fumikomi geri<br />

1. Move into attention stance <strong>and</strong> perform a st<strong>and</strong>ing bow<br />

1. Move into natural stance position<br />

2. Look to <strong>the</strong> right <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n to <strong>the</strong> left (quickly)<br />

3. Drawing back <strong>and</strong> putting <strong>the</strong> weight on <strong>the</strong> right <strong>and</strong> back leg, pivot to <strong>the</strong> left into cat stance <strong>and</strong><br />

perform chudan ude uke<br />

4. Perform right hook punch (kagi zuki)<br />

5. Stepping up with <strong>the</strong> right leg into attention stance, look to <strong>the</strong> right side <strong>and</strong> set f<strong>is</strong>t to <strong>the</strong> right ide<br />

set position<br />

6. Stepping out with <strong>the</strong> right leg, pivot to <strong>the</strong> right into cat stance, at <strong>the</strong> same time perform a right ude<br />

uke<br />

7. Perform left hook punch<br />

8. Stepping up <strong>and</strong> looking to <strong>the</strong> front in a high natural stance, set h<strong>and</strong>s to <strong>the</strong> left set position<br />

9. Stepping forward with <strong>the</strong> right leg into right kokutsu dachi perform a right augmented ude uke<br />

block, chudan area<br />

10. Stepping forward with <strong>the</strong> left leg into left zenkutsu dachi perform a downward x block (right over<br />

left <strong>and</strong> f<strong>is</strong>t closed)<br />

11. Draw <strong>the</strong> arms back into <strong>the</strong> body <strong>and</strong> perform a jodan x block (f<strong>is</strong>t open, right over left)<br />

12. Keeping <strong>the</strong> wr<strong>is</strong>t toge<strong>the</strong>r pivot right h<strong>and</strong> around <strong>and</strong> under left performing a grasping block. Draw<br />

both h<strong>and</strong>s back to <strong>the</strong> right h<strong>and</strong> set position<br />

13. Staying in left zenkutsu dachi perform a left zuki<br />

14. Stepping forward with <strong>the</strong> right leg into right zenkutsu dachi, perform a right zuki, draw back right<br />

leg into cat stance <strong>and</strong> perform a right ude uke<br />

15. Looking over <strong>the</strong> left shoulder <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> rear pivot on <strong>the</strong> left leg 180 degrees into right kiba dachi<br />

<strong>and</strong> perform a right gedan bari uke<br />

16. Look to <strong>the</strong> left <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> front <strong>and</strong> perform a left gedan bari uke<br />

17. Stepping over an in front <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> left leg with <strong>the</strong> right perform a right empi uchi (elbow strike) to <strong>the</strong><br />

left h<strong>and</strong> open palm. While performing elbow strike pivot into right zenkutsu dachi at time <strong>of</strong> strike<br />

18. Stepping forward with <strong>the</strong> left leg into kousa dachi perform a right ude uke <strong>and</strong> a left gedan bari uke<br />

19. Stepping forward with <strong>the</strong> right leg into right reverse forward stance perform a jodan augmented<br />

right ude uke block (looking to <strong>the</strong> rear)<br />

20. Pushing <strong>of</strong>f with <strong>the</strong> right leg to <strong>the</strong> rear lift both legs up under <strong>the</strong> body <strong>and</strong> pivot <strong>the</strong> right side <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> body 180 degrees to <strong>the</strong> opposite position<br />

21. L<strong>and</strong>ing in crossover stance, left leg behind right <strong>and</strong> facing <strong>the</strong> right side, perform a gedan x block<br />

22. Look to <strong>the</strong> right, step back with left leg into right zenkutsu dachi, facing <strong>the</strong> rear, perform a right<br />

ude uke<br />

23. Looking over <strong>the</strong> left shoulder, pivot to <strong>the</strong> left <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> front on a 25 degree angle drawing back into<br />

cat stance, step outward to <strong>the</strong> left side on an angle putting weight on <strong>the</strong> left leg perform a right<br />

spear h<strong>and</strong> strike downward with grasp, left h<strong>and</strong> to side <strong>of</strong> head shift <strong>the</strong> left leg into reverse forward<br />

stance, perform a right jodan ude uke <strong>and</strong> a left gedan bari uke<br />

24. Draw <strong>the</strong> left leg back up into attention stance still facing <strong>the</strong> left direction, keep arms in block position<br />

25. Look to <strong>the</strong> right, step to <strong>the</strong> front <strong>and</strong> right on a 25 degree angle, stepping with right leg over <strong>and</strong> in<br />

front <strong>of</strong> left, pivot out with right leg putting weight on <strong>the</strong> left leg perform a left spear h<strong>and</strong> strike


downward with grasp, right h<strong>and</strong> to side <strong>of</strong> head shift into reverse forward stance while performing<br />

left jodan ude uke <strong>and</strong> right gedan bari uke<br />

26. Draw back right leg to a high natural stance still looking to <strong>the</strong> right, arms in block position<br />

27. Face <strong>the</strong> front <strong>and</strong> go into natural stance<br />

28. Go into attention stance <strong>and</strong> perform st<strong>and</strong>ing bow (tachi rei)<br />
