• The Nueva Vizcaya State University is a historical
metamorphosis of two colleges merged to form a
stronger academic alliance in Cagayan Valley. It has two
campuses formerly known as the Nueva Vizcaya State
Institute of Technology (NVSIT) now Bayombong
Campus and Nueva Vizcaya State Polytechnic College
(NVSPC), now Bambang Campus.
• Established in 2006, the Centre for Environmental
Resources Management and Sustainable Development
(CERMSD) caters to the challenges of developments in
the premise of sustained natural resources utilization,
conservation and their management encompassing
environmental protocols.

• CERMSD envisions to promote, implement, facilitate
the sustainable use and management of the endowed
environmental natural resources along with the
millennium development programs of the Philippine
Government while strengthening collaborations with
leading institutions outside the country.
The approach revolves within the principles of :
1. Community-based
2. Demand driven
3. Multiple use
4. Good governance

PRODUCTION
PRODUCTION
The old practice is ordinary composting which takes
longer period
Product is simply integrated in the farm aimed at
increasing farm outputs at the less inputs applied
Less attention is given to the impacts of organic
farming from the point of:
organic waste recycling
optimum use of local and natural resources
building healthy environment
improving health among people
utilizing a technology that is cost-effective.

• July 16, 2006, vermicomposting technology was
initially established in the NVSU-College of
Forestry in collaboration with the Center for
Environmental Resources Management &
Sustainable Development (CERMSD) purposely
for research, instruction and production of
vermicompost to support fertilizer requirement of
established in-campus demo projects of the
university

• Established as a small-scale project with two (2)
kilos of African Night Crawler and four (4)
concreted compost bins (1m x 5m) was managed by
a senior forestry student.
• Because of the vermicompost project it paved
him the way to Germany as Environmental Envoy
sponsored by Bayer Philippines.

• In April 2007 a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between the
NVSU and the Philippine Council for Aquatic & Marine Research &
Development (PCAMRD) with funding assistance of PhP 1 M from the
KR2 program of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA).

Progressively, the project was managed by the Center of the
University until it became the Regional Vermicompost and Vermimeal
Production Center (RVVPC) RVVPC) for Region 02.

MAJOR MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• The project has expanded meeting the
requirements of the Memorandum of Agreement.
• Established at the old forest nursery site of the
main campus with an area of 23m x 63m (1449 m 2 ).
Vermicast Vermicast/Vermicompost
Vermicast Vermicompost Production Area
- 100 m2 area with shade; 8 vermi beds at 2m x 5m x .20m, and 2 1m x 5 m x.20 m
- Vermi beds prepared in loose hollow blocks with cemented bottom.

PRODUCTION PRODUCTION and and PACKAGING
PACKAGING
• Production of vermicompost had remarkably
increased after the project was assisted by
PCAMRD.
• To date, production has increased to an average of
1511 kilos (1.5 tons) of vermicompost per harvest
• Processing and packaging are done in the former
sericulture building with floor area of 192 m 2 .
This is where harvested vermicompost are stocked
for sale.
