We are <strong>at</strong> a unique time for our<br />
congreg<strong>at</strong>ion – a new senior m<strong>in</strong>ister, a new<br />
year and a convergence of challenges and<br />
opportunities – and the <strong>Pastor</strong> Parish<br />
Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Committee <strong>in</strong>vites every member<br />
and friend to help us br<strong>in</strong>g all of these forces<br />
together to form a new era <strong>in</strong> the history of<br />
First Parish Church.<br />
Officially, the role of the <strong>Pastor</strong> Parish<br />
Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Committee is “… nurtur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
pastor, the rel<strong>at</strong>ionship between the pastor<br />
and the congreg<strong>at</strong>ion, and clarify<strong>in</strong>g the role<br />
of the pastor.” The committee fulfills th<strong>at</strong><br />
responsibility by:<br />
1. Assist<strong>in</strong>g the pastor <strong>in</strong> becom<strong>in</strong>g better<br />
acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with the <strong>church</strong>, its members,<br />
and the community.<br />
2. Assist<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>church</strong> <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g good<br />
rel<strong>at</strong>ions between the pastor and parish.<br />
3. Serv<strong>in</strong>g as an advisory group to the pastor.<br />
4. Identify<strong>in</strong>g areas of conflict <strong>in</strong> an early<br />
stage and assist<strong>in</strong>g the parties <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />
resolv<strong>in</strong>g their differences.<br />
5. Provid<strong>in</strong>g a written evalu<strong>at</strong>ion of pastoral<br />
performance for annual consider<strong>at</strong>ion by the<br />
Council and Human Resources Committee.<br />
This year’s <strong>Pastor</strong>al Parish Rel<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
Committee members are Don Beddie, Diane<br />
Fiske, Mary Norris and Krist<strong>in</strong> Simunac. As<br />
one UCC source po<strong>in</strong>ts out, one of the<br />
hardest jobs of a PPRC member is gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
started. The committee must learn quickly to<br />
trust one another and to be honest without<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g thre<strong>at</strong>en<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>in</strong>timid<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g. S<strong>in</strong>ce the<br />
committee is not a legisl<strong>at</strong>ive body th<strong>at</strong> can<br />
vote on behalf of the <strong>church</strong>, we have to rely<br />
on good and open communic<strong>at</strong>ion with all<br />
parties – congreg<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>church</strong> governance<br />
and the pastors to build th<strong>at</strong> trust. We are<br />
blessed to have already begun a comfortable<br />
and trust<strong>in</strong>g rel<strong>at</strong>ionship.<br />
Communic<strong>at</strong>ion is the key to success of<br />
any <strong>Pastor</strong> Parish Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Committee. One<br />
of the ways we hope to keep communic<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
flow<strong>in</strong>g, open, and go<strong>in</strong>g two ways, will be to<br />
engage as many as possible <strong>in</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g about<br />
the challenges of the m<strong>in</strong>isterial voc<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />
career, the ways <strong>in</strong> which dynamic lay<br />
leadership can support our pastoral team and<br />
the different ways of address<strong>in</strong>g the k<strong>in</strong>ds of<br />
questions which most often lead to a disconnect<br />
between pastor and parish. Keep <strong>you</strong>rselves<br />
open to learn<strong>in</strong>g and w<strong>at</strong>ch for different study<br />
opportunities this year.<br />
In the meantime, if <strong>you</strong> have any concerns,<br />
questions or ideas, please feel free to contact<br />
any of the PPRC members. We will listen and<br />
respond appropri<strong>at</strong>ely.<br />
