FEBrUArY–MArCH 1862—<br />

Most Confederate troops are<br />

withdrawn from <strong>Florida</strong><br />

Capt. John J. Dickison became a<br />

Civil War legend leading <strong>the</strong> famous<br />

Company H <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second <strong>Florida</strong><br />

Cavalry. He was sometimes called<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> Swamp Fox for his wily,<br />

hit-and-run forays against Union<br />

forces; but Yankee soldiers<br />

referred to him simply as<br />

“Dixie.” Palatka served<br />

as his headquarters,<br />

but Dickison carried<br />

out missions all over<br />

<strong>the</strong> state. After <strong>the</strong> war,<br />

he served in <strong>the</strong> state<br />

Legislature. Dickison and<br />

His Men, a book written<br />

by <strong>the</strong> captain’s wife Mary<br />

Elizabeth and published<br />

in 1890, tells <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong><br />

his wartime exploits.<br />
