FEBrUArY–MArCH 1862—
Most Confederate troops are
withdrawn from Florida
Capt. John J. Dickison became a
Civil War legend leading the famous
Company H of the Second Florida
Cavalry. He was sometimes called
the Florida Swamp Fox for his wily,
hit-and-run forays against Union
forces; but Yankee soldiers
referred to him simply as
“Dixie.” Palatka served
as his headquarters,
but Dickison carried
out missions all over
the state. After the war,
he served in the state
Legislature. Dickison and
His Men, a book written
by the captain’s wife Mary
Elizabeth and published
in 1890, tells the story of
his wartime exploits.
