Learned from Senorita Marta Padilla by Anthony Ivancich in Madrid,<br />

March 1963. By tradition three folias are done consecutively in a medley-however,<br />

each varies in tempo and may resemble a different dance altogether.<br />

Maestra Padilla eays of the Folias, I'The Folia is the most irnportant song of<br />

the Canary Islands. It is passionate and idyllic, reflectlng the true temperament<br />

of the feelini;s of the fortunate inhabitants of the Blessed Islands. At<br />

the same time, it is a gentle and witty dance. It possesses a special fixed<br />

form, and itg harmonic form is stereotyped.rr Here follows a Fol,ia:<br />

l-? Move hands as if digging toward floor with an imaginary<br />

spade. Start to R side of body and dig twice. At the sarne<br />

tirne noove the R leg to help dig.<br />

3-4 Repeat meas 1-2 to opposite side.<br />

5 Step forward onto ball of the R foot then {latten R foot. At<br />

the same time throw coal over the R shoulder with the<br />

imaginary spade.<br />

6 Repeat meas 5 to opposite side.<br />

7 Step back with L foot and at the same tirne shade the R eye<br />

from imaginary cave opening light which is straight forward<br />

with R flattened hand. L hand extends down along the L leg<br />

(not stiff). The top part of the body faces to the left slightly.<br />

9-10 Step forward 7 steps. At the sasle tirne push coal cart with<br />

both hands.<br />

ll t Step fwd onto R but leave L foot where it was. (At the same<br />

time bring hands out to side as if an umpire does when he<br />
