WHY? • Increase property values in Fayette County – Shows Fayette County is aware of the value of not only maintaining, but upgrading athletic facilities to keep competitive with the surrounding Atlanta metro area high schools. We want to be a community that invests in itself. • Keep Fayette County competitive with Coweta County – Coweta County passed an ESPLOST which is paying for three county high school turf fields • Create venues where state championships and tournaments can be held (Soccer & Lacrosse All-Star Game; opportunity lost – Feb. ‘12) • Create venues where city recreation departments can rent facilities for recreational league play and tournaments • Higher value for dollar spent (turf vs. grass fields)
BENEFITS OF TURF 1. Over the length of its lifetime, synthetic turf is cheaper to maintain than grass. – Field lifespan is 10 years (includes a 10 year warranty); after 10 years, the field will need to be resurfaced at a cost of approximately 60% of the original cost 2. Field ready to use on day one 3. Unlimited field use – 3,000 hours vs. 1,000/year 4. No risk of user sensitivity to chemicals 5. SAFETY – field is consistently softer than grass, conditions are the same every time 6. No loss of field use due to wet conditions 7. No painting; markings are permanent, field is ready 100% of the time 8. Virtually no maintenance headaches 9. Much higher value for dollar spent 10. No maintenance headaches for track surface due to chemical staining/corrosion, over-seeding, etc. The county just spent $450,000 renovating 4 of the tracks, much of the damage was due to field maintenance 11. Aesthetically, the turf fields will showcase that Fayette County is maintaining their athletic facilities (Coweta County and the north side of Atlanta)
