Adams ES student surprised with heartfelt reunion
to t the hundreds of Adams elementary students sitting in
the cafeteria, it was just another regular lunch period, but
something wonderful was about to happen. School social
worker, Jennifer montes, made the announcement. “We
have a surprise visitor with us today.” the children silenced
and looked around. then, out from behind the stage curtain
walked a u.S. navy service member.
Little desire nicole moreno was sitting in the corner of the
first table, her back to the stage, eating and talking with her
classmates. She felt someone tap on her shoulder and when
she turned around her mouth dropped, her eyes widened
and she immediately jumped from her chair straight into
the arms of that u.S. navy service member – her mother.
desire hadn’t seen her mom, Petty officer daynicole
Sanchez, since this summer when she went to visit her in
Virginia. that is where Sanchez had been stationed for the
last three years. next march, Sanchez will be deployed
overseas and will spend nearly a year over there. the
november 1 surprise visit will likely be the last time Sanchez
sees her daughter before she leaves to serve our country.
“Happy.” that is how the first grader explained feeling after
being reunited with her mother. By the tears in her mom’s
eyes, it was obvious Sanchez felt the same.
Morrill students meet June the Cow
June the Cow from Southwest dairy Farms
visited PreK, Kinder, and 1st graders at
morrill elementary november 4. thanks
to mrs. naomie montemayor, 1st grade
teacher at morrill eS who coordinated the
visit, the students had the opportunity to
Trading candy for
better health
Yvette White, P.e. teacher at Carroll Bell eS, asked
her students to bring their uneaten Halloween
candy and trade it in for a jump rope. the recent
Healthy Schools Program award winner created
this challenge to encourage good health and
hygiene. the candy was then donated.

HEF gets a boost, big names
and more scholarships
the Harlandale education Foundation (HeF) recently
received a boost from the red mcCombs Partner in
education (Pie) program. HeF provides $500 or $1,000
scholarships to every graduate who pursues a higher
education. Pie provides $100 for every car sold to the
buyer’s school district’s foundation if the buyer is enrolled
in the program. Five HiSd employees purchased vehicles
from a mcCombs lot and that led to the $500 donation.
more Harlandale iSd students will have the opportunity
to attend local colleges on a scholarship thanks to HeF
Board member norma martinez Lozano and her husband,
rafael Lozano. together they created the Juan martinez
Scholarship at St. mary’s university in honor of her late
father. the scholarship will be awarded exclusively to
a Harlandale iSd graduate. mr. and mrs. Lozano also
created a scholarship endowment exclusively for an HiSd
student who will attend utSA. We are very thankful of
mr. and mrs. Lozano for their generosity and passionate
commitment to our students’ futures.
the HeF Board met Wednesday, november 2, 2011 and
approved the creation of a HeF Advisory Board. We are
very excited to welcome the following HeF Advisory Board
members to the Harlandale family:
Campuses honor local veterans
the rayburn elementary School faculty, staff, students and their
parents got out of the cold morning weather and warmed up to
a patriotic event. in recognition of Veterans day, the campus
invited local service members to be honored on november 11.
the ceremony opened with a beautiful solo performance of the
national Anthem by ms. elizabeth Snelling, music instructor at
students at Columbia Heights elementary School said the snacks
they were taste-testing were “good” but wondered about the
mre bags filled with chicken fajitas and sloppy Joes.
“Cool! How does that taste?” one student asked the Army
soldiers standing on the other side of the table. “Pretty good,” a
couple of them replied.
Service members of the 470th military intelligence (mi) Brigade
and the 717th mi Batallion were at Columbia Heights november
10, a day before Veterans day. teacher nadja root, a u.S. Army
veteran, coordinated their visit for the third year in a row. Her
hope is to give children a better understanding of military life,
called “Proud of our Veterans”.
over at morrill elementary School, community members joined
faculty and staff in honoring veterans with a special mural painted
by mr. miguel Alvarez, second grade bilingual teacher. Photos of
faculty, staff and community members who have served in the
military surrounded the mural. everyone in attendance enjoyed
sweet bread and coffee in the cafeteria. Veterans at the campus
recited the Pledge of Allegiance for the morning announcements.
the job opportunities it offers and the skills it takes to defend
our country.
there were a total of five stations set up across the gym, field
and parking lot areas. Students got to spend time at each one.
Besides trying military food, they also learned some first aid,
wrapping soldiers’ arms. At a different station, they were able
to carry backpacks filled with expensive radio equipment then
walk out into the field and try to communicate with those still at
home base. Kids also had the opportunity to climb inside some
military vehicles and honk the horn. they competed to see
who could do the most sit-ups and pushups. then, they were
awarded with some Army swag.

Students voice opinions in advisory meeting
Superintendent robert Jaklich initiated student advisory meetings last school year to get a pulse on the campuses from
students. once again, the students are coming together with the Superintendant’s Cabinet to voice their concerns and
opinions.
the first meeting was held october 14 at Harlandale HS. Students from Harlandale HS, Harlandale mS, and Leal mS
attended the meeting, with two campus representatives from each grade. the second meeting took place at mcCollum
HS on november 11 with mcCollum HS, Kingsborough mS and Leal mS in attendance. the committees discussed current
Leal MS Parents have Coffee Talk
Hundreds of children go missing every year and not many
make it back home. How to teach kids about safety and talk
to them about danger was the mission of the 2nd Cup of
Coffee at Leal middle School on Friday, november 18.
the Adams elementary School Art exhibit prompted many
people to take a break from the usual hustle and bustle of
the downtown Bexar County Courthouse during the past
few weeks. From artistic depictions of the Banyan trees in
india to painted portraits inspired by the works of famous
symbolist artist, Gustav Klimt, the exhibit had much to
A A representative from the the Heidi Search Center Center gave an hourlong
presentation on a topic not many people want to think
about, much less discuss.
it was eye-opening, informative
and, at times, just sad, but very necessary. About About 75 parents
showed up for the monthly meeting and left with a deeper
understanding of the need to empower their children.
tthe
2nd Cup of Coffee was filled with fun and games too.
ttables
with tamales, donuts, bagels, and fruit were lined
up on one side of the library while another section had
giveaway items, a couple of roasters just in time to use for
thanksgiving.
Athletics motivates students
in the classroom
“no Pass - no Play.” originating from the university
interscholastic League (uiL) rulebook, these words
motivate student-athletes throughout the school year to
succeed not only in their sport, but in the classroom. even
with the rigorous workload these students take on, HiSd
athletics has noticed an increasing amount of students
eligible to play during the first half of the school year.
the varsity football programs at Harlandale and mcCollum
High Schools both fielded 48 players with zero failures
throughout the season. Students who received, at the
end of any grading period, a grade below 69.4 (other than
an identified advanced class) is considered ineligible by
the uiL. However, that didn’t happen.
Head Football Coach issac martinez feels that the “no Passno
Play” rule is a big part in athletes’ academic success.
“We are constantly talking to them about the classroom
and how important it is. We closely monitor their grades
via gradespeed and are in contact with teachers about all
College students for a day
world of biology and physics.
Schulze elementary School
3rd grade students had the
opportunity to take part in our
Lady of the Lake university’s
(oLLu) College Conexion in
november. under the direction
of Kay Stanson, College
Conexion empowers students
by providing academic and
social support that will enhance
their potential in high school,
college and career.
taking on the role of a college
scientist, the students spent a
whole day at oLLu exploring the
student-athletes and their progress in the classroom,” said
Coach martinez.
the high school volleyball teams were no different. each
program had all its athletes in varsity, junior varsity and
freshman (A) teams eligible. “For the most part we
have been very fortunate within the McCollum volleyball
program,” said Head Volleyball Coach rosann martinez.
“grades have never been much of a factor when it comes
time for the 6 weeks to end. it makes for a comfortable
environment.”
“the more the merrier” comes to mind when thinking
about the importance of having a full roster for athletic
programs. “Having all athletes stay eligible enables teams
to stay in competitive mode and gives us added depth for
out teams,” said Coach isaac martinez.
is there a correlation between student eligibility and team
success? Coaches throughout the Harlandale iSd say yes.
“the students were engaged
practically every second of the day
and being captivated in the inquiry
of science! it warmed my heart and
made my chest pound with pride
with how much they participated
so scientifically and respectfully,”
said Schulze eS teacher Andriana
Lapoint.
Schulze eS staff and students are
looking forward to returning to
the university in the spring for the
second session of the program.
Don Buckely, Joseph segura, Carmen Jaramillo, adrianna Frias, Lois Brown
the t national Consortium for teaching about Asia (nCtA),
a Freeman Freeman Foundation initiative, and its partnership partnership with
Professional education (CPe) credit by completing
ttrinity’s
annual seminar on teaching about Asia.
but, more importantly, this great opportunity is open for
other HisD H teachers and i hope to make more teachers
aware of it,” said Lois Brown, teacher at the Frank tejeda
Academy. ms. Brown is one of the few teachers in San
Antonio to take advantage of the study tour in Asia
offered by nCtA.
trinity eASt professors, the seminars give educators
the opportunity to excel in the teachings of Asianrelated
material such as in World History and Geography
