Learners may carry forward existing minor awards (components) as exemptions<br />

<strong>to</strong>wards new common major and special purpose awards, where <strong>the</strong>y are appropriate,<br />

until December 2015 See Appendix 5 regarding how <strong>to</strong> claim an exemption for a<br />

learner.<br />

Minor awards (components) achieved through an exemption will be graded as Exempt<br />

and identified as such on <strong>the</strong> transcript. As <strong>the</strong> transcript identifies <strong>the</strong> learner’s entire<br />

FETAC award his<strong>to</strong>ry, <strong>the</strong> original component on which <strong>the</strong> exemption is based and<br />

<strong>the</strong> grade awarded will also be listed in <strong>the</strong> transcript.<br />

From January 2016 only <strong>the</strong> new components may be used <strong>to</strong> achieve common<br />

awards. Learners will not be able <strong>to</strong> use existing or previously awarded components<br />

(minors) <strong>to</strong>wards a common major or special purpose award after that date. Providers<br />

must advise learners of this.<br />
