Music for Life!

Chairman’s message
Halala! Celebrating our great Norwegian friends
The Field Band Foundation this year celebrates a decade of collegial association with the
Norwegian Band Federation and FK Norway (Fredskorpset). These two institutions, which
are in turn are supported by the Norwegian Foreign Office and NORAD, are now deeply
embedded in the DNA of the Foundation. While we appreciate their generosity of spirit and
acknowledge their substantial financial commitment, it is mutual respect and affection that
continues to fuel the relationship. To our Norwegian friends who are here in their numbers,
we say a heartfelt “Tusen takk!”
– Herman Mashaba
CEO welcome
People make the difference
Welcome to this most important of the many events on our calender! Every artist needs an
audience for their performance, and we thank you for being part of that audience today.
The Field Band Foundation’s (FBF) strength lies in its dedicated and hard working Board.
Our Life President, Bertie Lubner, who is celebrating his 80th year, still has more energy than
most people half his age. Our Chairman, Herman Mashaba, leads with passion from the front
and our Deputy Chairman, Brain Gibson, keeps us all in line with his clear and succinct mind.
Willie Erasmus and Busi Dlamini make sure we are financially 100% accountable; Joe Matsau
and George Lindeque guide us with their vast human resources skills and all the other Board
members each play a significant role. We honour and thank them all.
One of the great advantages of non-profit work is that colleagues are vocationally-driven.
They are unusually dedicated, motivated and energised. The Field Band is particularly
fortunate in having young employees and volunteers who have come through our system
and know the benefits of belonging to the FBF. They carry out their duties with deep insight
and committed enthusiasm.
Our dream is that other people, companies and organisations, both in South Africa and
abroad, will appreciate what a well managed and supported organisation can achieve and
will join us in assisting more youngsters by establishing a Field Band in every town in South
Africa. May many, many more youngsters join us on a journey of “music for life”.
– Retha Cilliers
Academy bands
The two Field Band Academy bands performing are made up of the two groups of current
Academy students. Theirs is a two year course with one group having started last year and
the other in 2011. We hope that you enjoy their performances - the results of our Academy!

The National Field Band
The National Field Band is made up of members from all the field bands around South
Africa. Most of these members have been with the FBF for a long time and are tutors
or band coordinators selected for their skills and their sense of responsibility. Every
year this group takes part in at least two workshops. Important performances such as
international tours, CD recordings and the SA Tattoo may also be undertaken. These
members of the National Field Band are the youth leaders of the FBF.
