Field Band Foundation highlights
• Celebrating 10 years of partnership with the Norwegian Band Federation and
FK Norway, De Beers, and the Jim Joel Fund.
• The Field Band Academy opened in January 2010 and 60 students are currently
enrolled.
• More than 700 FBF members took part in the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening and closing
ceremonies.
• Supported by FK Norway, five FBF members and five NMF music teachers spend a year
in each other’s countries.
• Annually, four FBF members spend three months with the Pioneer Drum Corps in the
USA and take part in the Drum Corps International World Championships, thanks to
Jonathan and Jennifer Oppenheimer.
• We have started three new Field Bands: in Emalahleni in the Eastern Cape (the first Field
Band to be exclusively supported by a local municipality), Daniëlskuil in the Northern
Cape (De Beers) and Thabazimbi (Anglo American).
• More than 2 800 rehearsals will be held this year.
• With SIDA support, 65 HIV life skills workshops are being held in 2011.
• VCT testing has been done with 306 youngsters between the ages of 14 and 27 years
this year and we aim to test an additional 1 000 at this event.
• Three leadership workshops will be held in 2011.
• With the assistance of Make an Immediate Difference Foundation and the ApexHi
Charitable Trust, we have registered 274 orphans and vulnerable children in our
Children in Distress programme.
• We have a membership of 4 500 youngsters from 296 schools in 106 townships.
• This year’s National Championships involves 2 160 FBF members.
