UC Davis and Cal Poly Will Battle It
Out Saturday for 2008 Great West
Conference Title
For the second straight year, the Great West
Conference football title will be decided on the
field between two unbeaten teams playing in their
final league game of the season. Last season,
South Dakota State handed North Dakota State its
only loss of the season and won the 2007 Great
West title with a 4-0 mark.
On Saturday in San Luis Obispo, Calif., Cal Poly
and UC Davis enter the teams’ final league game
without a loss with the 2008 title on the line. Cal
Poly is 7-1 overall and ranked No. 3 in the
Football Championship Subdivision, while UC
Davis enters the game with a 5-5 mark, but
capable of putting points on the board. To make
matters more interesting, both teams consider the
other a major rival.
“There’s not a player on our team that doesn’t
know at least one player on UC Davis’ team,”
said Cal Poly coach Rich Ellerson. “We recruit a
lot of the same players from the same region.
There’s not a team in the country that knows us
better than UC Davis.”
The game has more meaning for Cal Poly, which
must win to keep its FCS playoff drive alive. For
UC Davis, a loss last week at home against
Sacramento State ended an impressive fourgame
winning streak and for all intents and
purposes, the Aggies’ playoff hopes. As an
interesting note, the last time Cal Poly went to the
NCAA playoffs in 2005, UC Davis handed the
Mustangs a 20-10 defeat.
“There’s a lot riding on this game,” Ellerson said.
“We’re playing for a conference championship, a
chance to go to the playoffs and we’re playing a
rival game against UC Davis. We have to take it
all in, put it on the shelf and play in the moment.”
UC Davis must try to stop the most explosive
offense in the FCS ranks. Cal Poly ranks first
in the nation in total offense (490.1 ypg) and
scoring offense (45.9 ppg) and has weapons
like QB Jonathan Dally, who leads FCS in
passing efficiency and has thrown 18 TD with
only one interception, and Ramses Barden
(996 rec. yards, 13 TD), who creates all kinds
of problems at 6-6, 227.
“They are very good offensively,” said UC
Davis coach Bob Biggs “The option is difficult to
defend, and they you have a guy like Barden
who not many teams can match up with.”
UC Davis poses a threat with QB Greg
Denham, who ranks 5th nationally in passing
yards (301.3 ypg) and a plethora of weapons
in RB Joe Trombetta and wide receivers
Bakari Grant, Brandon Rice and Chris Carter.
Carter and Rice each sent over the 100-yard
receiving mark in last year’s 63-28 loss to Cal
Poly. On defense, the Aggies rank 5th in
rushing defense at 74.9 yards allowed per
game.
Players of the Week from Week No. 11
The Southern Utah football has made a great deal of strides under new head coach
Ed Lamb and the Thunderbirds took another step forward with their first Great West
road victory since the league formed in 2004. In SUU’s 15-14 win over North
Dakota, defense and special teams did their jobs, with cornerback Colin Pretlow
registering six tackles, including a sack, and an interception, while punter Trevor
Ward kept the Sioux at bay with three punts that kept the host team pinned back in
their how end. Pretlow was named Great West Defensive Player of the Week for his
efforts, while Ward was named Special Teams Player of the Week for the third time
this season. The Offensive Player of the Week played just one half, but Cal Poly
QB Jonathan Dally did quite a bit, as he ran for two scores and threw two TD
passes in the Mustangs’ 49-3 win over North Carolina Central.
Offensive
QB Jonathan Dally - Cal Poly (6-0, 190, Sr., Santa Maria, Calif.)
The straw that stirs the drink for No. 3 Cal Poly, QB Jonathan Dally ran for two
touchdowns and passed for two more scores as the Mustangs extended their
winning streak to six games with a 49-3 non-conference win over North Carolina
Central. Dally played just the first half and rushed for 44 yards on just three carries,
scoring on runs of 21 and 4 yards. He also completed six of nine passes for 101
yards, including 4- and 26-yard scoring strikes to Ramses Barden, as Cal Poly
jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead and coasted to its seventh win in eight games.
Also Nominated - WR Chris Carter (UC Davis), QB Noah Shepard (South Dakota),
Cody Stone (Southern Utah)
Defensive
CB Colin Pretlow - Southern Utah (6-0, 170, So., Las Vegas, Nev.)
One of the leaders on the Southern Utah defense Saturday night, cornerback Colin
Pretlow had a big hand in his team’s first-ever Great West Conference road win and
its first overall GWC win in three years with six tackles, five of those solo. He
intercepted a pass at the UND 44 yard line with 28 seconds remaining to seal the
Thunderbird victory and also had a sack on a third-and-goal play at the SUU eight
that pushed UND back to the 15 yard line and led to a missed field goal.
Also Nominated - LB Mike Morales (UC Davis), LB Mark Restelli (Cal Poly), LB
Blake Hojer (South Dakota)
Special Teams
P Trevor Ward - Southern Utah (6-6, 245, Jr., Ogden, Utah)
Southern Utah punter Trevor Ward has turned into a valuable weapon for the
Thunderbirds. Saturday night, he punted four times for 208 yards, an average of 52
yards per kick, with a long of 62 yards. Most importantly, he pinned the Fighting
Sioux deep into their own end of the field three times, with two punts inside the 20
and another which went for a touchback as SUU picked up its first-ever Great West
Conference road win and its first overall GWC win in three years.
Also Nominated - S Shane Potter (South Dakota)
UNBALANCED SCHEDULE
There will be an unbalanced schedule within the Great West in
2008, as not all teams play a full round-robin schedule of four
contests. Since there will be an uneven number of games
played, the tiebreaker for the league title shall be as follows:
“The 2008 Great West Football Conference champion
shall be determined by a higher winning percentage. If
two teams finish the conference schedule with one loss,
but have different number of wins, than if the team with
fewer wins defeated the team with more wins head to
head, there shall be a tie for the title.”
WEEKLY COACHES TELECONFERENCE
listed in NCAA rankings - but if USD was considered QB FREUND would rank 11th in passing efficiency (157.2), WR BRADY
TRENBEATH would rank 7th in receptions per game (7.22) .... RB JOSH MURRAY ranks 9th in rushing at 111.8 yards per game ...
UND ranks 3rd in kickoff returns (24.7 ypr) ... the Sioux missed on their first fourth-down attempt of the season vs. SUU but still
lead the FCS ranks in that category at 87.5% ... with the loss to Southern Utah, UND now has a record of 50-7 in the Alerus Center,
with three losses coming to Nebraska-Omaha.

Great West vs. Non-Conference Opponents
The Great West has year in and year out scheduled the best of the Football Championship Subdivision. In the
first four years of the league, Great West has compiled a 57-50 record vs. fellow FCS teams, a 5-8 record
against teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision and and 18-3 mark vs. teams in NCAA Division II, NCAA Division
III and NAIA.
The Football Championship Subdivision has had some success in recent years when playing games against
Football Bowl Subdivision teams, and the Great West has played a big part. UC Davis put the Great West on
the map two seasons ago with the 20-17 victory over Stanford and it gave the league its first win over an FBS
team. North Dakota State and Cal Poly turned the trick last season - NDSU winning 29-24 at Ball State and Cal
Poly winning 16-14 at San Diego State. North Dakota State did the trick again - twice in 2007 - beating Central
Michigan 44-14 on Saturday, Sept. 22, and Minnesota 27-21 on Oct. 20, giving the Great West wins over an
FBS team in three straight years. Cal Poly opened the season with a 29-27 victory over San Diego State, giving
the league a record of 6-10 vs. teams from the FBS since 2004.
