Welcome to the Crowd Pumper team! We are so excited that you’ll be volunteering with us at<br />
National We Day this year!<br />
This unique one-day event celebrates the power of young people to change the world by<br />
engaging world renowned speakers and performers to inspire the 4,000 attendees.<br />
We Day is an event that educates students about the world’s most critical problems and how<br />
they can be part of the solution. <strong>The</strong>y are then able to turn their new-found inspiration and<br />
passion into action by participating in <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong>’s We Act program. This unique, yearlong<br />
program educates students on local, national and global issues and guides their action<br />
planning, develops leadership skills and engages them in world-changing action.<br />

As a We Day volunteer, you may get asked questions about <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong>, We Day, We Act<br />
and Me to We. We want to make sure you’re equipped with all of the details and information<br />
so that you feel comfortable answering any questions. Please read the following and pay<br />
special attention to the bolded words. <strong>The</strong>se are key words we would like you to know.<br />
What is <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong>?<br />

What is We Act?<br />
<strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong>’s We Act program inspires a generation to care about global issues<br />
Through the program, educators are provided with the practical tools needed to turn the<br />
inspiration from We Day into at least one local and one global action that benefits any issue and<br />
cause that youth care about<br />
In return, <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong> provides resources, lesson plans, the support of a Youth<br />
Programming Coordinator (YPC), and more to help educators and their students to fulfill their<br />
We Act commitment (of taking at least one local and one global action)<br />
We Act is designed to enhance each school’s existing service learning initiatives or to spark<br />
new ones<br />
Through the program, school communities are transformed by positive changes in student<br />
behavior, heightened engagement and the belief that it’s cool to care
Who is Me to We?<br />
An innovative social enterprise that empowers people to make socially responsible choices in<br />
their everyday lives<br />
• Provides people with better choices for a better world with socially conscious and<br />
environmentally friendly products and life-changing experiences<br />

• Trips: adult, youth & school volunteer trips<br />
• Leadership training programs: Customized Leadership Training and school programs<br />
• Speakers Bureau: inspirational and motivational Me to We speakers<br />
• Summer Take Action Camps for youth<br />
• Me to We measures the bottom line not by dollars earned but by the<br />
number of lives changed and positive social and environmental impacts made<br />
• Half of Me to We’s net profit is donated to <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong>, while the other half is reinvested<br />
to grow the enterprise and its social mission<br />
• Me to We staff members volunteer their time at We Day
Training and Event Day Information<br />
Mandatory Volunteer Training: Sunday, April 28 th , 5:00PM – 8:30PM at the Robert<br />
Guertin Centre, 125 Rue de Carillon, Hull, QC<br />
• Please arrive on time and enter through the Main Entrance, which is on the South side of<br />
the building (see map below)<br />
• A meal will be provided<br />
• Upon arrival you will receive a wristband; you MUST keep this on until event day as this is the<br />
only way security will allow you to enter the venue<br />
Event Day: Monday, April 29 th , 7:00AM – 3:00PM at the Robert Guertin Centre<br />
• Please ensure you are wearing your wristband and t-shirt that you received at training<br />
• Coffee and snacks will be provided when you arrive. We do encourage you to eat breakfast<br />
before arriving.<br />
• After you have a snack and drop your belongings off in the volunteer space, you will be directed<br />
to an area where all volunteers will gather before being dismissed to your station/designated<br />
area of the venue.<br />
• Lunch will be provided.
Parking & Transportation<br />
Please see the suggested parking lot for National We Day below. <strong>The</strong>se suggestions have been made<br />
based on your designated entry gate and the general flow of traffic. Please note that <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong><br />
does recommend taking public transit or carpooling when available. If you have any questions regarding<br />
your suggested lot please email Jackie Pilon at Jackie.pilon@freethechildren.com<br />
Please note: Buses will be parking in all lots on the South side of the building, so please park<br />
only on the Northeast side.<br />

Volunteer Do’s<br />
Treat everyone with respect and have a smile on your face - it’s an exciting day!<br />
Keep calm, cool and collected. Remember to stay relaxed yet energetic throughout the day no<br />
matter what the circumstance.<br />
Ensure guests are informed, engaged and having the best experience possible.<br />
Help everyone who comes to you with a question. If you don’t know the answer, seek it out<br />
from any staff member wearing a lanyard and return to let them know.<br />
Use your issues support team, they are there to help! Further detail will be provided at training.<br />
Remember, some of our guests are coming from out of town, so they might not be acquainted<br />
with the area. Please be polite and helpful at all times.<br />
When guests walk into the various Honoured Guest sections, let them know your name and that<br />
they can ask you about anything they may need.<br />
<strong>The</strong> catered lunch is for our guests, however be sure to take a short lunch break at your assigned<br />
time in the volunteer food/orientation area. Volunteer lunch time with vary depending on your<br />
schedule.<br />
Eat lunch, drink lots of water and take breaks when you need to. You are essential to the events<br />
success to we don’t want you to burn out.<br />
During clean up make sure nothing is left behind. Be sure that all promotional materials and<br />
signage are taken down in a manner which allows them to be used again. Please place all these<br />
items in the predetermined load out area.<br />
Refrain from networking with honoured guests for your own personal benefit. Please<br />
remember, this event is about the youth.<br />
Be yourself! <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong> is a young organization with amazing volunteers like you. Share<br />
something about yourself that speaks to the character of the organization.<br />

About the Crowd Pumper Team<br />
Crowd Pumpers are the face of We Day! We are leaders, event supporters, performers and <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>Children</strong> ambassadors. We work extremely hard to keep the crowd of thousands of youth excited and<br />
engaged at We Day. We Day is a unique day that relies on the participation and energy of the crowd,<br />
and the example is set by none other, than the Crowd Pumpers. You will guide them through special<br />
audience interactions, perform dance sequences and participate in other special production elements<br />
throughout the day. You are the role model and steward that will help set the tone and good vibes of an<br />
unforgettable We Day!<br />

Volunteer Roles & Responsibilities<br />
Crowd Pumpers will be working directly with <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong> staff, senior Crowd Pumping volunteers<br />
and audience members right in the middle of the action – directly in the venue bowl! We are the flashy<br />
people at We Day, which means people see us first, and we must uphold the integrity of the Crowd<br />
Pumper name. As a crowd pumper, you may be asked to perform tasks for other teams and staff<br />
members when you are not pumping up the crowd. We appreciate your cooperation and flexibility.<br />
Crowd Pumpers are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:<br />
Leading the We Day dance for the crowd (you are the expert, we gotta look good!)<br />
Providing the crowd with all the essential information for the day<br />
o Gabby and April will give you the run down on this during in-venue training, but you will<br />
need to be familiar with the We Day schedule<br />
Adhere to the cues from your Section Lead – the person you will be receiving direction from.<br />
Examples of cues are: standing ovations, special movements and other production requirements<br />
Keeping the crowd excited, and literally pumped up but setting an example for them!<br />
Dress Code:<br />
Shoes - bright coloured (i.e. Converse or high-tops, running shoes with neon shoe laces)<br />
Bottoms - Bright jeans, coloured parachute pants, slacks or patterned jeggings<br />
Accessories - Patterned bandanas, glow in the dark bracelets, funky hair clips, colourful<br />
headbands, earrings, bracelets, watches and hats, etc.<br />
Volunteer Requirements and Key Notes:<br />
Mandatory volunteer orientation on April 28 th from 5:00PM – 8:30PM at the Robert Guertin<br />
Centre – please come prepared with questions<br />
Being punctual and full participation is required<br />
Full understanding of roles and responsibilities (you will receive more training on the dates<br />
outlined above)<br />
Comfortable speaking about <strong>Free</strong> <strong>The</strong> <strong>Children</strong>, We Day, We Act and Me to We<br />
You will be expected to know the We Day dance in order to teach it to others<br />
Please note that the venue is NOT A NUT-FREE FACILITY, therefore we cannot guarantee nutfree<br />
food. Our suppliers are unable to guarantee halal meat but there will be vegetarian options<br />
available. Gluten-free, lactose and vegan options will be made available if you requested them<br />
when you registered.<br />
