SENIOR SPOTLIGHT photos & text by Mo Kelly The Senior Club annual luncheon meeting/elections/awards were held at the Senior Center on Friday, December 3. Entertainment started with our own dear Kitchen Band ladies followed by the popular 5-Star Band. If you were lucky enough like me, you caught a glance of Vickie Wiles, Center Assistant “a movin” and “a groovin” to the beat of the great music. It only lasted for a few seconds, but it was such a cute sight to see! The 2011 officers and new directors on the board were installed by Center Supervisor Eloisa Espinosa. •Needlecraft Instructor, Beverlie Ticer, proudly gave her class individual awards for their respective talents in making lap robes that are donated to local assisted living facilities. The tables were then turned on Beverlie when her students surprised her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers. •Service Appreciation: To John Clements, current city Recreation Supervisor (and former Center Supervisor), for always coming to our rescue in fixing/solving our computer membership software program problems. We thank him for his loyalty and support. •Lifetime Membership Award: to Mary Lammers, Travel Club Director. Mary joined the club in 1989. She was soon asked to volunteer in the Below: Needlecraft Instructor, Beverlie Ticer (seated), with some of her 20 students who all received Certificates of Appreciation: Delores Belmont, Rose Andrews, Jackie LeNarz, Rosemary Taylor, Alicia Quintero, Linda Murphy & Anita Torres. Fullerton Senior Club Luncheon travel office and she’s been there ever since. Her extensive travel knowledge and expertise over many years has been a tremendous asset to the club. Humble, shy, Mary always likes to stay in the background, but we just had to give her this long, overdue public recognition and reward her for her lengthy, devoted, untiring service on behalf of our club. We hope she never wants to retire. •Lifetime Membership Award: to Jane Holt, Club President for 2009 and 2010. Jane became a member in 1995 and has held many key positions (Director on the Board, Secretary, and 1st VP). She is one of the very few female presidents in the history of the club. Jane’s two terms have been much more time-consuming, diverse and unpredictable because of the city’s plans to build a new community center (combining our Senior Center with the Fullerton Boys and Girls’ Club). It’s a complicated undertaking and Jane has attended a multitude of city planning and council meetings. We were honored that Dick Waltz (former six-time president) was able to visit from Manteca, California, and present Jane with her plaque. We salute and honor Jane for her tenacity, great patience and strong endurance in representing our club. Call 714-738-6305 for more information. MID DECEMBER 2010 Fullerton Fire & Police Departments •929 Calls: The Fire Department responded to 929 requests for service in Nov. (669 were medical aid calls; 93 were automatic aid responses; 28 were fires; 8 were hazardous materials incident; and 64 were service calls. Of the medical calls, 429 required advanced life support.) •3,917 Calls: The Police Department received 3,917 emergency calls in November. There were 1,209 criminal reports taken and 402 persons arrested for various criminal offenses. •CSUF Parking Structure: Fire units responded shortly before midnight on Nov. 18 to the CSUF parking structure on a report of a vehicle on fire on the forth floor. The fire had activated the structure’s sprinkler system which held the fire in check until units were able to deploy hose lines. Cause undetermined. •Airplane Crash: Fire and police units responded to the 4000 block of W. Commonwealth on Nov. 24 on the call that a private single-engine airplane had crashed on Runway 6 at the Municipal Airport. The pilot and passenger from Newport Beach were removed from the plane and evaluated for injuries. The pilot and passenger suffered minor injuries and one was treated on scene after refusing transport to the hospital. •Dumpster Fire: Fire units responded to the 200 block of E. Santa Fe Ave. on a rubbish fire in the railroad right-ofway Nov. 12. •Community Policing: The Police Department held a monthly Community Policing and Crime Strategy meeting in Nov. and invited members of the CSUF Police Dept. to be a participating member to improve communication between the agencies. A crime trend of increased burglaries in specific areas of town was identified and a plan was implemented to educate the community in the affected areas and to reduce the opportunity for crime. •Curfew Sweep: The Police Department’s TARGET/Gang Unit participated in the countywide GRIP Curfew Sweep in a coordinated effort to locate and detain youth found to be out past curfew. 4 juveniles were detained in Fullerton and 51 were detained countywide Nov. 18. •Bomb: The OC Bomb Squad was called to detonate an expanding “acid bomb” thrown on the lawn of a home on Ladera Vista Dr. No injuries or property damage. •Train Station: A police patrol responded to the Train Station on a report that a 46-year-old woman had stepped off a train to have a cigarette and fell when she tried to get back on. She suffered superficial scrapes on her knee. •DUI Accident: A 20-year-old woman driver, who ran into a light pole at the corner of Harbor and Brea Blvd on Nov 14 at 2am, was found to be DUI. Two other women were in the vehicle. The driver sustained minor injuries. The passengers suffered major trauma. One was transported by Mercy Air and the other by ambulance to Long Beach Memorial Hospital. •Roll Over Accident: Fire units responded to a roll-over traffic accident at Lemon and Berkeley avenues at 12:46pm on Nov. 15. The patient was taken out through the vehicle’s window, examined, and treated by paramedics before she was accompanied to a trauma center. •Plumbing Fire: Fire units responded to a home on the 1400 block of Wickford Ave. in Brea at 11am on Nov 24th. The fire was in the wall of the structure and was caused by the homeowner making plumbing repairs with a propane torch. The fire was contained and the homeowner was treated for minor burns at the scene. •CERT: The Fire Department’s CERT training academy finished on Nov. 13 with 10 graduates. Fullerton Man Sentenced to 110 Years to Life in Prison Guillermo Rodriguez, 43, was found guilty of murder after killing his 43-year-old neighbor Donna Dutton when he found her in bed with his 18-year-old son in 2006. Rodriguez was accused of strangling Dutton, wrapping her body in a blanket, driving to Victorville and dumping the body in a remote area. He instructed his girlfriend and his son to tell police, if questioned, that the victim had left the dinner party at 2:30am. In Dec. 2006, Rodriguez told his new wife what he had done to Dutton two months earlier. His wife alerted Fullerton Police. During sentencing on Dec. 17 the victim’s sister and adult son gave statements to the court about the tremendous loss the family felt. The son was also convicted in the case for being an accessory after the fact and sentenced to one year in jail. Senior Deputy District Attorney Steve McGreevy of the Homicide Unit prosecuted the case.
