eceived his education through the first 12 grades. He was a member of the first graduating class in May 1927. He
attended Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, and graduated in 1933 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Marvin taught in two country grade schools during the 1930's, when the dust storms ravished the Great Plains. He
also taught in Jetmore grade school, where he met Lorna Harper. He and Lorna were married at the home of her
parents near Mound City, Kansas, on August 10, 1937. They were blessed with 42 years of marriage and three
children.
Lorna and Marvin moved to Beatrice, Nebraska, where he taught in a Mennonite Academy for five years. Their
first child, Marilyn, was born there, and they made life-long friends. However, Marvin often dreamed of farming,
so he returned to Kansas with his young family and began farming near Hanston and continued teaching for
several more years. Then he quit teaching to farm full-time and to keep a small herd of cattle. Two more children,
Paul and Alice, pined the family.
Marvin served on the United Telephone board for eight years and as a Gideon for 15 years. Distributing Bibles
with the Gideons was a highlight in his life.
The weather and the growing crops held interest for Marvin every day, and, blessed with fairly good health, be
was able to continue farming for many years, even after 'the death his beloved wife, Lorna, in 1979. In recent
years, he became his son, Paul's, right-hand-man and then welcomed Paul's children onto their team.
Marvin related his faith in God to everything he did and freely expressed his dependence upon God's care. He was
baptized as a teenager and pined the Hanston Mennonite Church. He sang in the men's quartet, sang in the 500
Mennonite Men's chorus, taught Sunday school, and served on the church board. Music gave him much pleasure,
and he especially enjoyed the singing of one of his grandsons, Scott Salmans.
