Message from the CEO
Fiscal stewardship is the hallmark of a great nonprofit organization. At Gabriel’s Angels
we have a strong belief that we owe that to you - our donors, volunteers and members
of our community. It is part of Gabriel’s Angels culture of “best practices” to ensure all
funding is used in an appropriate and efficient manner.
With this philosophy in mind, even in spite of the recent economic situation, we have been
able to slightly increase the number of children served. Gabriel’s Angels’ staff worked
relentlessly as the demand increased for our pet therapy services. This need is primarily
due to the greater stress placed on families and the decreased availability of mental health
services for abused, neglected and at-risk children and youth.
Certainly this challenge has been a drain on our balance sheet and as we rebuild it we are extremely appreciative for the
continued support from our community. Gabriel’s Angels is 100% funded by individuals, corporations and grants, not the
government - so we depend on you to help us. Our conviction remains steadfast that the healing power of a therapy dog
in the life of a child can be the catalyst for a better future.
Thank you for helping Gabriel’s Angels to Unleash the Love for these children.

Message from the Board Chair
A wise person once said “Being good is commendable, but only when combined with
doing good is it useful.” These words mean a lot to me as I look back over the last year,
but more importantly, they guide me as I humbly have the opportunity to lead a dedicated
Board of Directors.
Over the last couple years, we have faced many challenges, but we have also found
opportunities. By focusing on managing the strategic direction of the organization with
prudence, fiscal responsibility, and diligent stewardship of financial resources, we continue
to find ourselves in a mode of growth and development of not only our organization, but in
the partner agencies and communities that we serve.

2011 The “Link” Between Domestic
Violence and Animal Abuse
According to the Child Welfare League of America, Arizona ranks fifth nationally
in the rate of children with substantiated reports of abuse and neglect, which is
almost twice the national average.
The term “Link” as coined by the American Humane Society, defines the correlation
between child abuse, animal cruelty and other crimes of violence against humans.
It is undeniable that animal abuse is often one of the early signs of families in crisis
and is highly predictive in identifying children at risk for abuse and becoming potential
abusers. This type of violence is insidious, cyclical and is passed on from one generation to
the next without some form of intervention.
Research shows that children who are abused are more likely to become abusive adults.
However, the strongest predictors of subsequent violence and abuse can be changed. Gabriel’s Angels
Pet Therapy Program addresses the root cause of this social problem by treating the symptoms and cause of the problem
and intervening in this perpetuating cycle. There is no better tool to reach a child than an animal, which unfortunately
is frequently involved in the cycle of violence. During weekly or bi-weekly visits with the children, our therapy teams
strive to improve healthy core behaviors that are crucial to normal childhood development. Trust, empathy, self-esteem,
compassion, respect, self-regulation and tolerance are encouraged and developed in a nurturing and safe environment.
It is through the child’s direct contact with the therapy dog that the cycle of violence ultimately breaks down. The
development of the seven core behaviors are the first step toward ending the cycle of violence.

History
Gabriel’s Angels is named after our founding therapy dog, Gabriel, and our
‘angels’… the children we serve, our donors, supporters and volunteers.
Our organization began in 1999 when Pam Gaber, a volunteer at the Crisis
Nursery in Phoenix, took her Weimaraner puppy, Gabriel, to the holiday party
dressed as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Something magical happened at that
event, as children’s behaviors changed from shyness and anger to kindness and
compassion. Gabriel reached the children in a way that surprised and amazed
everyone.
Pam and Gabriel became registered through Delta Society, and soon a group of owners and dogs came together to
form a club to deliver pet therapy. Results with these first children exceeded expectations, as on-site caregivers and social
workers quickly confirmed that the children were more empathetic and nurturing to one another.
In response to overwhelming community support and encouragement Gabriel’s Angels was incorporated as a nonprofit
organization in the State of Arizona on May 12, 2000. On January 24, 2001, we were granted our 501(c)(3) status by
the Internal Revenue Service retroactive to date of incorporation.
Gabriel’s Angels has grown to 155 volunteer Pet Therapy Teams, serving over 120 partner agencies, and reaching over
13,000 children annually in crisis nurseries, domestic violence and homeless shelters, group homes, residential treatment
centers and self-contained classrooms in Phoenix and Southern Arizona. Each dog must undergo a registration process
and each volunteer must pass the standard security screening required by state law. There is no cost to the participating
agency to receive pet therapy visits for their children.
Gabriel’s Angels long term goal is to serve the estimated 20,000 children in need in Arizona and become the premier
provider of innovative children’s Pet Therapy programs throughout the country.

In May of 2010 Gabriel passed away. During his ten years as a therapy dog he reached
over 10,000 children and left an inspirational legacy of unconditional love and promise
for thousands of abused, neglected and at-risk children. Because of him hundreds of dogs,
along with their owners, have been inspired to give to the children and truly make a positive
difference.
Gabriel’s legacy lives on through Pam’s inspirational new book - Gabriel’s Angels: The Story
Of The Dog That Inspired A Revolution, and our many ‘angels’… the children we serve, our
donors, supporters and volunteers.
