Recognizing student-athletes face unique pressures, the University of Florida Athletic Department instituted the Office of Student Life in 1979. This award-winning program of personalized, professional guidance in numerous areas on a day-to-day basis has become a leader in student-athlete services, while also demonstrating UF’s commitment to the total development of its student-athletes. The commitment has paid some impressive dividends. Over the past 10 years, UF has tallied 830 selections to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll, the best 10-year total in UF and SEC history. In each of the past 12 years, UF has had at least 50 student-athletes receive conference academic accolades, and since 1980-81, 1,146 Gator studentathletes have been named Academic All- SEC. Achieving this type of success begins early. From aiding the transition from high school to college as a freshman, to choosing a major as a sophomore, through the career advisement period as a junior, until job placement as a senior, the OSL is dedicated to the personal growth and academic development of the student-athlete. NCAA Selects Florida as Pilot Program Florida’s Office of Student Life has been selected as one of 50 programs in the country to participate in the NCAA Life Skills Program. The mission of the NCAA Life Skills Program is to provide a systematic personal development program designed to reach each student-athlete based on his or her individual needs. The focus of the program is on the individual as a whole person academically, athletically and emotionally, and on the changing needs and skills of that individual during college and after graduation.s 8 UF’s academic advising program was named the 1995 Outstanding Institutional Advising Program by the National Academic Advising Association Academics Tony Meacham is the academic advisor in the Office of Student LIfe for the Florida softball team. His duties include coordinating registration and grade reporting for softball and football. Meacham joined the Florida staff in 1996. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Cincinnati and his masters from Xavier University. Meacham and his wife, Amy, have a son Isaac, who is a year old.
Professional Sports Counseling Panel - Florida has a Professional Sports Counseling Panel which assists Gator student-athletes in evaluating professional potential while also providing assistance in selecting professional representation and preparation for a professional sports career. The panel, which is endorsed by the NCAA, is comprised of three university president-appointed members. Florida’s panel has been selected as a model for other universities. The UAA has a comprehensive substance abuse program and gambling awareness education program for all student athletes. In October of 1998, the Office of Student Life was one of eight Division I programs to win the Program of Excellence for Life Skills Award, honoring excellence in academics and life skills programs. Florida was named one of the nation’s five premier schools for combining academic and athletic achievement by The Sporting News 9
