• Service Providers focus on more than bandwidth provisioning –
increasing network services in the infrastructure:
− Network Security – Firewall, IPsec VPN, IDS/IPS, Web Application Firewalls.
− Application Delivery Controllers – To balance the traffic across multiple
physical/virtual servers.
− WAN Optimization – To reduce the traffic on WAN links.
• Multi-tenancy Public Clouds support large number of tenants;
enables sharing of resources and costs among many network
service appliances for a large pool of users, allowing:
− Centralization of infrastructure in locations with lower costs (such as real estate,
electricity, etc.)
− Peak-load capacity increases (users need not engineer for highest possible
load-levels)
− Utilization and efficiency improvements for systems that are often only 10–20%
utilized
• Multi-tenant architectures – a trend in network services appliances
– requires multicore technology
The network plays a key role in how the service provider enables scalable,
on-demand, flexible yet secure bundles of services
