Page 6 OBSERVER MID FEBRUARY 2011 CITY SHORTS •Homelessness Prevention & Rapid Re- Housing Program: Ninety-one households (200 persons) were served by the Homelessness Prevention Program as of Dec. 21st. In addition 21 households (43 persons) were served by the Rapid Re-Housing Program. To date nearly 60% of the funds allocated to the city for the programs have been committed or expended. •OC Music Awards iPod Listening Wall: The OC Music award nominees will be presented in a 12 iPod Nano display in the Leo Fender Gallery at the Fullerton Museum Center on the corner of Wilshire and Pomona in Downtown Fullerton. Each of the iPod Nanos will contain one song and image from each of the nominated artists for the 2011 OC Music Awards. Video screens will accompany the listening wall, playing local music videos and award highlights. The exhibit opens Feb. 24 and runs through May 8. •Family Read Aloud: The library has started an evening program at 6:30pm on Mondays for first through third-grade children and their families. The new program “Family Read Aloud,” is designed to introduce emerging readers to the various sections of the Children’s Library, and includes books, puppet stories, crafts, and activities. The Children’s Library is open during the expansion construction of the Main Library. •Large Project Permits: In January permits for the following projects were issued: Sonic Burger drive-thru; Fox Theatre seismic retrofit; an eight-unit apartment building on Nicklett Ave; St Jude site work for the North West Tower. •Building Permits: In January 354 building permits were issued and 1,003 building inspections were completed. •Code Enforcement: In January 316 code enforcement complaints were made; 842 code enforcement inspections were completed; 681 code enforcement cases are active; 187 code enforcement complaints were closed. •Fire Department Calls: In January the Fire Department responded to 1,002 calls. Of that number 752 were for medical aid; 87 were automatic aid responses; 29 were fires; 6 were hazardous materials incidents; and 56 were service calls. •Development Services Efficiency Improvements: A new application worksheet to be completed by those with new plan checks will ensure that the complete scope of work and permits needed is understood by all parties, and that information can be entered into the permit system efficiently. •Fox Block Temporary Parking: The design is complete for construction of a 61stall parking lot on the northwest corner of Chapman and Pomona Avenues. The construction has an estimated cost of $300,000 and is expected to begin in April. •Community Center Groundbreaking: Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new $28 million 45,000 square foot community center in Amerige Park is scheduled for 4pm, March 1st. The new center will replace the Senior Center and the Boys & Girls Club. •Water Savings: The city saved 35.5 million gallons of water in 2009 and 74.8 million gallons in 2010 by reducing water usage at all city operated sites. Charity League’s 50th Anniversary Fashion Show Coming Up by Maggie Komrij The Fullerton Chapter of the National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) has named longtime Fullerton resident and community philanthropist Mitzi Demman as Honorary Chair of the 2011 Fundraiser Fashion Show. It is through this annual event that NCL is able to help support 19 local philanthropies, many of which Mrs. Demman has personally supported through her generous gift of volunteering over the years. Becoming a member of NCL in 1975, Mrs. Demman was a Patroness alongside her Ticktocker daughters, Angel, Christina, Marci and Barbara for a total of 16 years. During this time, she served in many capacities including Special Events Chair, Scholarship Chair, Presentation Chair, Grade Level Advisor, as well as President of the Board. In the decades since, Mrs. Demman is proud to have maintained her active status with NCL as a Clockwatcher. Her unwavering commitment to philanthropy continues to make an impact as she faithfully supports many community organizations, such as Fullerton Civic Light Opera, Boys and Girls Club of Fullerton, Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services, Fullerton Arboretum, Muckenthaler Cultural Center, and St. Jude’s Memorial Fund. Says current NCL President Carole Johnson, “The motto for our anniversary celebration is Creating a Legacy of Service. Through her example, Mitzi inspires us to become involved with the community, to commit to the development of our daughters, and to continue the NCL legacy”. This year’s Fundraiser Fashion Show entitled “Choose Charity” will be the culmination of a yearlong celebration marking the chapter’s 50th anniversary of bringing mothers and daughters together in support of the community. Being held March 6th from 10am until 3pm at the Orange County Hyatt Hotel, the day’s events will include a sit-down luncheon, a silent auction, and a grand-prize drawing for a chance to win $10,000. Warne Foundation 3rd Annual Young Artist Recital at CSUF Sun., Feb. 27 by Sara Garske The Warne Foundation is pleased to announce that its third annual Young Artists in Recital on Sunday, February 27, 2011 at 4 p.m. at the Recital Hall at California State University in Fullerton. The Miriam and Thomas Warne Stringed Instrument Scholarship Program was introduced in 2004. A friend of Bill Warne’s needed lodging for his daughter who was receiving a full scholarship at Chapman University. By providing housing for Nadia, this began an incredible journey. After meeting other musicians at Chapman University and California State University, Fullerton, the Directors of the Warne Family Charitable Foundation created the Miriam and Thomas Warne Stringed Instrument Scholarship Program. Bill’s parents, Miriam and Thomas Warne, met at Fullerton College while playing violin in the orchestra. Approximately twenty-nine stringed instrument musicians, attending four local universities, have benefited from this program with more than $202,000 awarded to students from Bulgaria, Ukraine, Austria, Michigan, Nevada, Massachusetts and Southern California. The Warne Family Charitable Foundation enjoys watching these incredibly talented young people mature into amazing, giving, and gifted adults who will "play it forward" for many years to come. Paper Airplane Contest for 7th Graders The Fullerton School District will be hosting the “Take Flight” Paper Airplane Contest for 7th grade students on Thursday, February 24th at 6:30pm in the Ladera Vista Junior High Gymnasium. Teams of two students from the following schools: Beechwood K-8, Fisler K-8, Ladera Vista Junior High, Nicolas Junior High, and Parks Junior High will compete in the contest in the categories of design and flight. First, second, and third place ribbons will be presented, with the first place team members each receiving two Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tickets provided by Ernie Fregoso, a member of the Fullerton School District Maintenance and Operations department. After each school’s initial qualifying event, there will be 30 seventh grade students competing in the final event on Feb. 24th. Fullerton School District's Science Advocacy Council (a committee of community members, retired scientists and engineers, and administrators) will act as judges, and District School Board members, District Cabinet members, principals, and science teachers will be attending. Events like this may encourage students to pursue the STEM areas of science, technology, engineering, and math.
MID FEBRUARY 2011 Fullerton Library Foundation Fundraiser One hundred and fortyseven people enjoyed a delicious lunch and a presentation by T. Jefferson Parker, the author of 17 best-selling crime novels. He told the interested audience about how he wrote his first book, “Laguna Heat.” Five years and five drafts later, the book was published - the rest is history. Parker also shared his latest book, “The Border Lords” which came out a few weeks ago. The co-chairs of the luncheon, Joan Mears and Babette Carlson, did a wonderful job planning and organizing the event. The $5,100 raised by the event will go to funding furniture, fixtures, and equipment for the library expansion. Fullerton Sunrise Rotary recently made a donation of $7,600 to the Fullerton Public Library for the new Teen Center portion of the library expansion. Join us for a delicious all-you-care-to eat breakfast with live musical entertainment. Since 1963, a total of 109 boys have earned their Eagle Scout rank as members of the Troop. The proceeds from the Pancake Breakfast will support our Scouting program, including funding outings, buying camping equipment, and providing services to our community. Some of these tiles have been in place for over fifty years. The tiles will be secured in a hanger at the Fullerton airport while the existing building is torn down to make room for the new Community Center. The tiles will be reset in their new home.
