Purpose of Course:
To improve your intermediate algebra skills in order to successfully complete Level 2 math courses:
Math 102: College Algebra
Math 106: Algebra with Calculus for Business Majors
Course Structure:
This course is comprised of 25 lessons divided into 3 Modules. Each module concludes with an in-class Module Exam.
MODULE 1: Solving Equations & Graphing 1
MODULE 2: Graphing 2 & Manipulating Expressions 1
MODULE 3: Manipulating Expressions 2 & Quadratic Equations
Lectures & Labs:
Monday lectures will review challenging material and provide assistance on upcoming lessons. Two computer lab classes
are scheduled to provide you with in-class time to work on online lessons. Individualized assistance is available to you during
lab. Scheduled Friday lectures will be used for review and taking exams.
Online Lessons:
Each computerized lesson is divided into five parts to help with your learning experience:
OVERVIEW Reviews prerequisite concepts necessary for each lesson. Pretest available to measure what you already know.
EXPLAIN Provides instruction on lesson concepts.
APPLY Provides practice problems before evaluation. Recommends further study where necessary.
HOMEWORK Additional practice that is scored and recorded. Students may take multiple attempts to improve score.
EVALUATE Measures skill improvement by quizzing. Serves as overall Lesson Score.
Students begin each lesson by taking a pretest in OVERVIEW. This pre-test score serves as a diagnostic tool to help
students choose their path throughout the rest of the lesson.
After learning about a concept in EXPLAIN, and practicing the concepts in APPLY and HOMEWORK, students then take a
lesson quiz in EVALUATE.
Students must earn an 80% on each concept’s HOMEWORK set within that lesson before attempting the EVALUATE
for that lesson. Students who do not earn an 80% may make additional ‘passes’ through the homework set until an
80% is earned.
1
A score of 80% or better is required for each lesson’s EVALUATE. Students may attempt a lesson EVALUATE three
times. Students who do not pass an EVALUATE by the third attempt will be instructed to satisfactorily complete some
offline practice problems such as the Evaluate Practice Test for that lesson &/or any individually prescribed homework
sets found in the PAN (online).
A student who scores 90% or above on each concept within a lesson pretest may count that score for that lesson’s
EVALUATE but must also complete the HOMEWORK for that lesson.
Success in the Course:
You are required to earn a MODULE SCORE of 80% or higher to successfully complete a module. You must successfully
complete Modules 1 & 2 or you will be required to repeat the entire course. If you cannot complete Module 3 but have shown
adequate effort you will have a one-time opportunity to repeat Module 3 during the Spring 2012 term. If Module 3 is not
completed in the spring, you will be required to repeat the entire course.
Completing Each Module:
Your MODULE SCORE will be determined by the following:
Category Weight Description
Participation 5% Lecture/Lab Attendance, Pre-Module Exams, Classroom Activities
Homework 5% Online ASAlgebra Homework
Evaluates 5% Online ASAlgebra Evaluates
Module Exams 85% Exams are given approximately every five weeks. See attached schedule for details.
MODULE SCORE 100% You must earn an 80% to successfully complete the module
Near the end of each Module you will be given a Pre-Module Exam. If you score an 85% or better on the Pre-Module Exam
it will count as your Module Score and you may move on to the next module. If you score below 85% on the Pre-Module
Exam you will have an opportunity to review that exam in preparation for your Module Exam. If you do not successfully
complete a module after taking the exam, you must see one of your instructors for assistance. You may retake a module exam
multiple times but may be required to complete additional practice and study. All online lessons must be completed within the
module in order to be eligible to retake the exam. You may continue to review activities within one module while also
working on the next module to ensure that you meet all course deadlines.
Participation:
Participation is based on attendance, active participation during lecture/labs, and completion of pre-module exams.
Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each lecture/lab and will count toward your participation grade. Poor
attendance will be detrimental to your module score.
You are expected to actively participate in lectures and labs. During lectures this may mean using clickers or engaging
in other work. During labs, it is expected that you will work to complete your HOMEWORK and EVALUATES.
During lab, students viewing websites other than https://asalgebra.platoweb.com will be marked absent
Late students will be marked LATE. Three LATES will be equal to one absence.
If a student must miss a lab session they may obtain permission from the instructor/student lab instructor to attend
an alternate lab session and request that the student instructor change their ABSENT to PRESENT.
Your grade on all pre-module exams will factor into your participation grade; doing poorly will result in deductions.
Grading Criteria:
This course is graded Pass/Fail. A grade of NC (no credit) may be used in place of F if the requirements listed below are
met. You must earn a grade of P to move on to a Math Level 2 course.
To earn a
grade of…
P
(Pass)
NC
(No Credit: Not
Passing)
F
(Fail)
…You must meet all of the following:
Successfully complete each Module
Did not successfully complete one or more Modules
Have no more than 3 unexcused absences for the semester (across lecture and lab)
Successfully complete assigned online lessons, seeking help when needed
Have earned less than 60 credits overall as a student
Did not successfully complete one or more Module
Have 4 or more unexcused absences for the semester (across lecture and lab)
Did not successfully complete assigned online lessons, or take advantage of free tutoring opportunities
Please note, this course offers 3 institutional credits, which do not count toward graduation, but do reflect a student’s
workload. These 3 credits are used for GPA calculation. A 3-credit F will lower a student’s GPA. A grade of P or NC will not
affect GPA.
2
Testing out of Course:
All students will be given a Course Diagnostic Pretest during the first week of classes. A student earning an 80% or higher
on this pretest will pass out of the class and complete course requirements. This paper/pencil test is only given once.
Computer & Clicker Responsibility:
Each student is responsible for his/her workstation and log-on passwords. Please report any damaged or missing equipment
to your instructor. You will be assigned a specific clicker for lectures to use for the semester. A hold may be placed on your
account if you remove the clicker from the room or if you cause damage to lab computers.
Academic Dishonesty:
Any instance of academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade for this course and may result in additional
disciplinary action. Refer to The Pathfinder’s (the student handbook’s) statement on academic dishonesty for further
information. It is available online at: http://www.frostburg.edu/admin/ses/pathfinder.pdf
Beyond the Classroom:
The online aspect of this course is available anywhere that the Internet can be accessed. You will find this to be highly
advantageous to your overall course completion if you work on the course outside of class time. Other techniques of success
that may be helpful include asking questions and having the determination to do well. Additional help is not only offered in
class and lab but also in scheduled appointments with the Instructor or tutors in the Tutoring Center, 151 Pullen Hall. This
course is designed for the students’ success, not only in DVMT 100 but also in future math studies.
