Greetings from FWA!
Newsletter 10
October 2009 – March 2010
The Financial Women’s Association of Singapore (FWAS) committee is
looking forward to an exciting 2010! To recap, the year past has been an
eventful year for us, with our blockbuster Career Re-tooling series, numerous
brown bags, Power Lunch, and our charity event tie-up in aid of Assisi
Hospice. We hope to replicate our successful events last year, and bring our
members even more!
The start of 2010 has been extremely busy, with a host of activities that made
us wonder how a group of working ladies, often working mums, could
volunteer and do so much! The FWAS launched our new Leadership
Dialogue—a forum where persons in leadership positions are invited to
address FWAS members and friends, with Boris Collardi, the new CEO of
Julius Baer. The success of the event was matched by another insightful
lunchtime session with President of Bain Capital Asia, James Hildebrandt.
In our first staple of the year—our Brown Bags, Dennis Lim, co-CEO of
Templeton Asset Management shared with us the current topic of interest,
BRIC. More Brown Bags are lined up, including one on microfinance, and one
with a famous lady author!
More than ever, with our expanding range of events, we need active
volunteers who can offer their time and talent to our very worthy endeavour of
promoting fellowship among women in the finance industry, and a sense of
public duty to charitable causes with particular focus on women in need. Our
upcoming AGM on 23 March provides an excellent opportunity for you to learn
more about the FWAS. This is a members-only exclusive.
Many other events are planned. Do check them out at our website. We have
also lined up a mentorship program and a charity event. We warmly welcome
volunteers who have interest in these areas to join us.
Remember to renew or sign up as a member in 2010 to enjoy all these
benefits and more!
The FWAS Committee would like to wish all members and friends a
successful year ahead.
- MEMBERS ONLY EXCLUSIVE -
The 2010 FWAS AGM has been diarised for the year. We invite all members
to come forward and vote for your 2010 FWAS Committee, and express
views close to your hearts as to how the FWAS can continue to improve to
serve you!
In addition, members will get to meet a “Knight of Gastronomy”, and learn
how to taste chocolate like a professional. Master Chocolatier and Chef
extraordinaire, Vincent Bourdin, will join us for the evening to host a
chocolate tasting workshop.
The workshop will cover the history, evolution and appreciation of all things
about chocolate. Learn the basics and understand the significance of cocoa
content, plantations and all the things that make a piece of chocolate
exceptional.
Here’s a short biography of Vincent Bourdin:
Following various experiences in high-rated hotels, restaurants, and pastry
shops in Europe, Vincent joined Frederic Bau's team at Valrhona “L’Ecole”
(Valrhona school) as pastry consultant in 1992, before opening the Singapore
Regional office for Asia Pacific in 1996.
Vincent’s career started as a traditional apprenticeship in Antibes and
Cannes, (French Cote d’Azur). He then left France to work in England with
Pierre Kaufmann (Three-Michelin star chef) at Intercontinental Hotel. After
three years in London, Vincent returned to Paris, France to settle-down, first
at the Meridien Hotel, before joining the famous Pastry Chef, Pierre Herme.
Since then, Vincent has participated in many food festivals and shows around
the region such as:
- Singapore World Gourmet Summit
- Raffles Hotel Food and Wine and Art Festival
- New World Food and Wine at the Ritz Carlton Singapore
- Food and Wine Festival of Melbourne and Brisbane
- “Salon du Chocolat” in Paris and Tokyo
- World Gourmet Festival @ Four Seasons Bangkok
In Singapore, Vincent teaches regularly at At-Sunrice, Global Chef Academy
on all subjects related to chocolate.
In 2008, the French government officially recognized Vincent’s passion and
defence of the Gastronomy, and he was knighted in the national order of
"Merite Agricole”. A tea connoisseur, he is also a founding member of the
Tea Drinker Club in Paris.

FWA Power Panel
Insights for 2010
26 November 2009
The Power Panel was a keynote event of the year for FWA. This year, we hope
to empower career women with insights as to how to charge forward and
succeed in the new economic and social landscapes in 2010, and beyond.
The FWA was very privileged to have 4 distinguished women leaders from the
commerce and finance industries sharing their personal experiences and
advices. Ms Tan Sushan, founder of FWA and head of Private Wealth
Management for SEA and Australia for Morgan Stanley, was the moderator of
the panel. The 4 esteemed speakers were:
• Ms Jessica Tan – Managing Director Microsoft Singapore
• Ms Saw Phaik Hwa – President & CEO, SMRT Corporation Ltd.
• Ms Chong Siak Ching – President & CEO, Ascendas Pte. Ltd.
• Ms Christine Ong – CEO Wealth Management Singapore, UBS AG
The event, held at the exclusive Tower Club, attracted 65 participants who all
enjoyed the very relevant and inspiring discussions on women leadership,
winning attitudes, work-life balance, etc.
It was refreshing to hear from women who have made their mark in industry by
rising to the pinnacle of their profession. Attendees greatly appreciated the
essential tips, which would help them rise above the various challenges in the
current marketplace and in life. The event concluded on a very positive note.
We all believe that women can make significant contributions to the economy
and the community when we maintain an open mind, be flexible, adaptive,
balanced and look after our own health and well-being.
The keynote event was kindly sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank.
FWA Leadership Dialogue Series
Breakfast with Boris Collardi, CEO, Julius
Baer Group and Bank Julius Baer
18 February 2010
On 18 February, amidst on-going CNY festivities to celebrate the incoming
Tiger Year, the FWA launched its inaugural session of Leadership Dialogue
Series, where outstanding leaders in the financial industry are invited to share
leadership insights in an informal breakfast dialogue setting.
Our first session was held at the Tower Club's Atlantic Dining Room, which
provided a cozy atmosphere for Mr. Boris Collardi, CEO of Julius Baer Group
and Bank Julius Baer, to speak.
The audience of around 30 attendees were treated to an insightful talk which
spanned issues as diverse as managing gender diversity within an organization
to how to hone and develop leadership skills in the current environment.
Mr. Collardi provided many useful takeaways, and reminded all of us of the
importance of intuition—an often forgotten mantra of being publicly confident in
one’s own abilities. The Question and Answer session was lively with questions
coming fast and furious such that we overran the schedule and finished at
10am. The general feedback from everyone, including the men, was very
positive, and adjectives used for the morning talk ranged from “inspiring” to
“enlightening”.
Lunch with James Hildebrandt, President
of Bain Capital Asia
2 March 2010
March 2 saw the FWA hold its second session in its Leadership Dialogue
Series.
This time, the FWA was honored to host Mr. James Hildebrandt, President of
Bain Capital in Asia.
The talk was held at the Bain & Company conference room with introductions
by our very own Founder and Past-president, Ms Tan Sushan. Over a delicious
lunch of a variety of Bento boxes, Mr Hildebrandt gave an overview of the
private equity industry globally, and particularly, in Asia emphasizing how the
credit crisis had impacted this branch of finance. This included both the
subsequent geographical and sectoral impact.
The Q&A which followed was very lively with question coming thick and fast on
the intricacies of the industry, for example, how the economic environment has
impacted management fees, how one calculates hurdle rates and so on.
The talk ended on a personal note with Mr Hildebrandt outlining how he moved
successfully from being a lawyer into consulting work and now heading private
equity in an easy self-deprecating style, which elicited a lot of laughs and kept
the mood breezy. His words of advice "not everyone is cut out to be in private
equity...it's not an easy business to be in" may have cautioned a few members!
The talk was well received with members of the audience hanging around
thereafter to ask more questions and network.
Welcome to Mr. Boris Collardi
Mr. Collardi engaging his audience
with his insightful talk.

Brown Bag Lunches
A staple in our regular FWA line-up of events, brown bag lunches
developments, network, grow professionally and personally by
Upsizing your worth in a Downsizing economy
16 October 2009
In a downsizing economy and challenging market condition, everyone is tested
so severely that often, discouragement sets in with a hanging question: "How
does one stay upbeat in such gloomy time?”.
We were delighted to have notable image consultant Jill Lowe join us to share
some secrets of achieving a winning image to help us each improve our
personal brand.
On 16 October 2009, twenty FWA members and friends spent an afternoon
picking up essential tips from Jill to enhance their presence in the corporate and
social life. In a very lively and interactive presentation, Jill demonstrated as to
how one can create a positive personal brand, and strengthen one’s “presence”
by adjusting hairstyles, make-up, colours, clothes, words, tone, body language,
and etiquette. The speaker emphasized that one should take a holistic
approach to enhance their “ professional statement” in the corporate world, as
there are always intangible “X-factors” which affects or complements how one
could portray an image of authority, influence, credibility, and likeability, etc.
Jill used her choice collection of make-up kits, colourful props, and apparel on
participants to demonstrate how easily and effectively an immediate
transformation could assist one's external image. The session was packed with
tips and tricks as to how one can polish the external appearance and
expressive techniques to create a winning edge in various spheres of life. In
addition, soft skills and self-awareness help to improve a professional women’s
confidence in marketing oneself as a total package. We thank Jill for her time in
sharing these useful tips with the ladies of FWA.
Jill engaging her audience
One lucky member got personal tips
for her makeover!

Mastering your Feelings: Feel confident and Funtastic!
23 October 2009
Alan Yip was his usual positive and enthusiastic self as he went in front of a 20plus
audience, and shared with us his thoughts on his book "Get the Winning
Edge - For Lasting Success and Fulfillment".
It was a practical and fun-filled workshop that saw the audience standing up and
sharing side-tickling sessions with co-participants. Whilst Alan did a great job
keeping a light-hearted mood throughout the session, he touched on deeper
topics like reclaiming your identity, and building unstoppable confidence,
extracting the highest value out of your own self, achieving mental relaxation and
peace of mind, turbo-charging your self image, and uncovering the secrets of
cultivating positive emotions.
All this went down very well with the audience, who appreciated the interactive
nature of the workshop. Quite a few ended up buying Alan's Funtastic Parenting
book, and had a nice autograph by him with little hearts!
Dare to Change – Venturing into Social Enterprise
3 December 2009
Ever wonder whether there is more in life than family and work…. dollars, cents
and KPIs, etc?
Career women nowadays are more aware of their ability to make a positive
difference to the community by “giving back”, which is a powerful way to achieve
holistic and lasting fulfillment in life.
The FWA and Thomson Reuters had the opportunity to co-host a Brown Bag
event on innovative volunteerism and social enterprise to create further
awareness on how this could be done in a professional and fun manner.
The guest speaker, Kevin Teo, Founding Partner and Director of Volans, shared
with participants some good insights, global trends, and successful models of
how individuals and organisations have built solid and sustainable social
enterprise ventures throughout South East Asia. It was an eye-opener when
Kevin identified 3 trends for doing charitable work via “high impact volunteerism”,
“social investment” and “social enterprise”. He highlighted some key ongoing
challenges, which needed to be overcome by having more funding support,
talent, resources, and innovation. The event ended with a very interactive Q&A
session.
Volans (supported by EDB and Skoll Foundation) is a pioneer, consultant and
“middle-man” for business entrepreneurs, corporates, investors and governments
to develop and scale innovative solutions in the social responsibility, social
enterprise, and environmental arena.
Our thanks and appreciation goes out
Discover the inner power in your voice to make an impact in
the workplace and your life
15 January 2010
As we all know, the ability to present oneself and ideas powerfully has never
been more important in today’s dynamic information age.
In this highly interactive Brown Bag, Deborah Torres Patel kept the 30
participants engaged by conducting simple voice, posture, and imagination
exercises to deliver authentic expression and create a positive image and
impression on others. She even showed the participants secrets on how to make
numbers interesting in our presentations!
All about BRIC
11 February 2010
“All About BRIC—Brazil, Russia, India and China” Brown Bag featured Dennis
Lim, Co-CEO and portfolio manager at Templeton Asset Management Ltd. He
kept the audience riveted with his stories of emerging market investment
experiences, drawn through his many years of experience and his appointment
as director of Templeton Asset Management Ltd. in August 1995.
His candid insights and sharing of investments in BRIC countries generated
active dialogue between Mr Lim and the audience. The event was a great
success judging by the positive feedback we had from members and friends
alike.
FWA Year End Party
9 December 2009
2009 was indeed another roller-coaster year for many in FWA Singapore. From market lows in March lows through
to personal and professional mountains that many had to overcome, we were all very thankful to look forward to a
light-hearted break from the events of the year—which, was of course the Year-End Party! This year, we were glad
to partner with Raoul, which hosted us in their spanking new Paragon store for a night of fun, bubbles, good food,
and company!
The party was indeed one with a difference—from the welcoming samba trio, which kept all members and guests
entertained through the evening through to the two towering models who walked the floor modeling Raoul’s latest
collection. Members and friends were able to browse the season’s fashion must-haves in clothes, bags, shoes, and
various accessories in our own private space. Of course, when one meshes women and fashion, the result would
be more than quite a few ladies seen leaving that evening with shopping bags under their arms!
To sweeten the evening, each guest left with a goody bag from Harpers who provided coverage of the event.
Perhaps you spotted a few familiar faces in the January 2010 issue? If not, we provide coverage here and on our
website. If you missed the fun, do join us for our next event!

We even got coverage in the January issue of Harpers Magazine!

Page 10 Connections
60 seconds with Emma Boyd
Tell us about yourself and what you do in the financial
services industry
I was born in southern Scotland, and moved to south of England after I graduated in
Economics. I’m married to a script writer and we have a son, Benedict, who is 4 years
old this year. Sadly for us, my husband couldn't get the writing vibe in Singapore, so,
he has been working in Beijing this past year—this has been tough for all of us, but
bearable and his Mandarin is now vastly improved!
I have a varied background. I started my career in financial services, in the management of a blue-chip mutual life
insurance company in the UK, but in my client-advisory role discovered that my greatest passion and talents lie in
understanding and solving clients' issues. When that company was taken over, I took some time off to travel to
Nepal and New Zealand for trekking and adventure sports.
On my return to the UK, I decided to use the tuition money to set up my own art agency for UK sculptors making
large-scale work in all media from glass to bronze. I even sold a piece to Zac Starr for his father Ringo Starr (of
Beatles fame), whom I met when we delivered the 2-meter high woodcarving to his estate on his birthday. Working
for oneself was tough, as we heard from the FWA Entrepreneurs Panel last year, unless if you are lucky enough to
have a spouse whose earnings are sufficient to keep you both going.
I decided then I should return to work and looked for something outside UK to keep things interesting. I came over
to Singapore and became the Sales Director for a small MNC Design Agency before joining Pricewaterhouse
Coopers in August 2007. What this means for me—meetings, proposals, pitches, client events and many coffees
and lunches formal and informal. I love this role and my clients!
If you weren’t working in the financial services industry, what would you do?
I love languages and travel, and have lived for short spells in Germany and Italy. I have also tried taking time off
and things easy yet the client challenge and team interaction often drew me back to work. OK, I admit I need the
money too! This means I wouldn't be kicking back too long, although there are still some adventures I would like to
have.
I am fascinated by the psychology of individuals and organisations, but, I’m not sure I could make money from it.
I admire art and artists; yet, I don't think I'm cut out to be one. So, my ideal future, whether financial services or not,
would be working directly with quality clients alongside inspiring professionals in a stimulating team environment,
helping to motivate people and drive business forward. The rest would be just details!
Describe yourself in three words
The three words that come to my mind are “Generous”, “Determined” and “Inquiring”. I asked a couple of good
friends—they added “Positive”, “Proactive”, “Empathetic”, “Encouraging” and “Gracious”!
What do you do after hours outside work?
On weekends, Benedict and I would go to Jurong East, Pasir Ris or East Coast Park, for swimming, cycling and
remote-controlling—outdoors and active as far as possible. I aim to go to Pilates and Spinning every week. I cochair
two of PrimeTime's (www.primetime.org.sg) sub-groups for Marketing and Mothers Support, plus I like to
attend BritCham and AmCham professional and social events.
Having joined FWA when I arrived in Singapore, it was Ee Lin who persuaded me to become more involved with
the Committee and so I now work with the Grace Liew on the FWA Networks sub-committee. The ladies at FWA
are a great and fun group. It's been a wonderful experience to be invited to get to know them and be part of 'making
it happen'.
Coming from Scotland, where our family had horses, cats and dogs, and holidays were camping and hiking, the
one thing I lack in Singapore is some serious outdoors. I am hoping, now that Benedict has turned 4, is to take him
on a trip to the Indian Himalayas later this year complete with trains, jeeps perhaps a short trek. Before that, we will
be visiting the UK in March. It will be our first visit home since we left in 2006, and we'll be heading for the hills!
