GENERAL INFORMATION<br />
OBJECTIVES<br />
This week long forest science course provides an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <strong>Australia</strong>n forest<br />
management, the economics of wood production <strong>and</strong> other forest services. The course<br />
will cover both planted <strong>and</strong> natural forests <strong>and</strong> will provide an appreciation of<br />
environmental issues <strong>and</strong> international strategic trends in the forestry industry.<br />

Creswick is located in west-central Victoria, 129 km northwest of Melbourne <strong>and</strong> 15 km<br />
north of Ballarat. This former gold mining town had the original School of <strong>Forest</strong>ry<br />
established in 1910 <strong>and</strong> has since had a long association with forestry education in<br />
Victoria <strong>and</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>and</strong> is currently a campus of The University of Melbourne.<br />
WHO SHOULD ATTEND<br />
The course is aimed at potential managers as well as consultants within the forest<br />
industry. The course will be of particular relevance to those who may have recently joined<br />
the industry with little formal training in the science of <strong>Forest</strong> Management.<br />
WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND<br />
A fuller underst<strong>and</strong>ing at a professional level of forest science <strong>and</strong> management <strong>and</strong> its<br />
application in <strong>Australia</strong> is essential if our industry is to achieve its full potential. This<br />
course will provide you with the underst<strong>and</strong>ing to improve your personal <strong>and</strong> business<br />
performances <strong>and</strong> to view your operations within national <strong>and</strong> international contexts. In<br />
order to facilitate exchange <strong>and</strong> discussion, the course is limited to about 35 participants.<br />
Early booking is advised to avoid disappointment.<br />
INVITED SPEAKERS<br />
In addition to the course program of lectures, leading personalities in the forestry scene<br />
will address participants at dinners on the Monday <strong>and</strong> Thursday evenings.<br />
REGISTRATION<br />
The registration fee of $2530 per person ($2300 for registrants from organisations that are<br />
Patrons or Subscribers to the Gottstein Trust) includes GST <strong>and</strong> covers the presentation<br />
sessions, lecture notes, field trip, morning <strong>and</strong> afternoon teas, lunches each day, <strong>and</strong><br />
special dinners on two evenings, but not accommodation nor breakfast.<br />
ACCOMMODATION<br />
A block booking has been made at the Mecure Ballarat Hotel, 613 Main Street, Ballarat<br />
for $140/night (single) including breakfast, for the nights of Sunday 17 th February<br />
through to Thursday 21 st February inclusive. A shuttle bus to Creswick <strong>and</strong> back in the<br />
morning <strong>and</strong> afternoon has been arranged. Please indicate on the registration form your<br />

GOTTSTEIN TRUST FOREST SCIENCE COURSE<br />
LECTURERS AND SPEAKERS<br />
Dr. Tom Baker is a Senior Research Fellow at the<br />
University of Melbourne. His extensive research in<br />
plantation silviculture has focused on identifying<br />
plantation growth <strong>and</strong> yield, resulting from both site<br />
<strong>and</strong> management treatments.<br />
Professor Mark Brown is the Professor of <strong>Forest</strong>ry<br />
Operations <strong>and</strong> Director of <strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Forest</strong><br />
Operating Research Alliance, University of Sunshine<br />
Coast. In this role, he leads research in forestry<br />
operations, aiming to build a strong industry focused<br />
collaborative research program for <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />
Dr. David Cunningham is the Assistant Secretary of<br />
the L<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>s Branch, <strong>Australia</strong>n Bureau of<br />
Agricultural <strong>and</strong> Resource Economics <strong>and</strong> <strong>Science</strong>s<br />
(ABARES). He has worked with the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
Government or the United Nations for 12 years, in<br />
research <strong>and</strong> management, applying science <strong>and</strong><br />
economics to policies <strong>and</strong> programs in agriculture<br />
<strong>and</strong> natural resource management.<br />
Mr. Rob de Fegely is the current president of the<br />
Institute of <strong>Forest</strong>ers of <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>and</strong> Director of<br />
Myoora Investments Pty Ltd. He has over 20 years<br />
experience in the international forestry industry,<br />
including fibre <strong>and</strong> wood supply <strong>and</strong> environmental<br />
impact assessments.<br />
Dr. Geoff Downes is currently Manager, <strong>Forest</strong><br />
Quality Pty Ltd <strong>and</strong> previously a Principal Research<br />
scientist at CSIRO. Dr Downes has a background in<br />
tree biology <strong>and</strong> wood quality <strong>and</strong> has undertaken<br />
many projects to better underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> measure<br />
wood variation.<br />
Mr. Andrew Dunn has been the General Manager of<br />
the Timber Development Association, NSW for over<br />
20 years. He has background in structural<br />
engineering <strong>and</strong> is a passionate supporter of wood<br />
as the preferred building material.<br />
Dr. George Goroyias is a Principal with Poyry<br />
Management Consulting (<strong>Australia</strong>) Pty Ltd whose<br />
current role is Head of <strong>Wood</strong> <strong>Products</strong> Asia Pacific.<br />
He has a background in wood science <strong>and</strong> value<br />
chain management <strong>and</strong> was a past Manager of the<br />
Biocomposite Centre in Bangor, Wales.<br />
Mr. Peter Grist is the Manager, Resources with the<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>Products</strong> Association. He has<br />
almost 20 years experience in forestry research <strong>and</strong><br />
policy development including roles across a number<br />
of government departments <strong>and</strong> as a forest industry<br />
consultant at BIS Shrapnel.<br />
Mr. Braden Jenkin is the Managing Director of Sylva<br />
Systems Pty Ltd <strong>and</strong> an Honorary Fellow with the<br />
University of Melbourne. He is a forester with<br />
extensive experience in natural <strong>and</strong> plantation<br />
forestry both in <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>and</strong> internationally.<br />
Mr. Simon Murphy is currently a Senior Research<br />
Fellow at the University of Melbourne, leading a<br />
native forest research group focused on silviculture.<br />
He has 30 years experience in <strong>Australia</strong>n native<br />
forest silviculture research.<br />
Dr. Nick O’Brien is the Director, Resource<br />
Management Systems for New <strong>Forest</strong>s Pty Ltd. He<br />
is a forester with 20 years experience in carbon<br />
accounting, plantation nutrition <strong>and</strong> silviculture<br />
research.<br />
Mr. Islay Robertson is the Chief Executive of SA's<br />
<strong>Forest</strong>ry Corporation. With over 30 years experience<br />
in the forestry industry he has worked in Tasmania,<br />
the United States <strong>and</strong> been based in South <strong>Australia</strong><br />
for the last five years.<br />
Professor Roger S<strong>and</strong>s, now retired, was until<br />
recently Head of the New Zeal<strong>and</strong> School of<br />
<strong>Forest</strong>ry, University of Canterbury. He previously<br />
served as Head of School of Melbourne University's<br />
School of <strong>Forest</strong>ry, <strong>and</strong> Campus Director at<br />
Creswick. He has extensive international experience<br />
in a variety of forestry-related work including<br />
silviculture, physiology <strong>and</strong> sustainable forest<br />
management.<br />
Mr. Richard Stanton is the National Secretary at<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Forest</strong>ry St<strong>and</strong>ard Pty Ltd He is<br />
responsible for oversighting the revision of the<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>Forest</strong> Management St<strong>and</strong>ard. Mr Stanton<br />
has been involved in the forest <strong>and</strong> wood <strong>and</strong> paper<br />
products industries for many years including an<br />
extensive term as the CEO of the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
Plantation <strong>Products</strong> <strong>and</strong> Paper Industry Council.<br />
Mr. Sid Sidebottom, MP is currently the<br />
Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>Forest</strong>ry (DAFF). Mr Sidebottom's portfolio<br />
responsibilities include the areas of forestry <strong>and</strong><br />
dairy, as well as skills <strong>and</strong> education in agriculture.<br />
Mr. Ric Sinclair is the Managing Director of <strong>Forest</strong> &<br />
<strong>Wood</strong> <strong>Products</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. He has extensive public<br />
<strong>and</strong> private sector experience in the forestry <strong>and</strong><br />
forest products industry, <strong>and</strong> is a major promoter for<br />
the <strong>Wood</strong> Naturally Better campaign.<br />
Dr. Andrew Sullivan is head of CSIRO’s Bushfire<br />
Dynamics <strong>and</strong> Applications Group. Dr Sullivan was<br />
involved in developing, designing <strong>and</strong> coordinating<br />
the production of the CSIRO Grassl<strong>and</strong> Fire Spread<br />
Meter, the Fire Spread Meter for Northern <strong>Australia</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> CSIRO-Modified McArthur Mk 4 Grassl<strong>and</strong> Fire<br />
Danger Meter.<br />
Dr. Ashley Webb is a Senior Research scientist with<br />
<strong>Forest</strong>s NSW. He is passionate about sustainable<br />
forest management practices, particularly as they<br />
relate to catchments. Dr Webb was a 2011 Gottstein<br />
Fellow <strong>and</strong> travelled to the USA to investigate<br />
payments for watershed services schemes.<br />
Dr. Chris Weston is a Senior Lecturer in the<br />
Department of <strong>Forest</strong> <strong>and</strong> Ecosystem <strong>Science</strong>,<br />
University of Melbourne. His research background is<br />
