Bock, professor of anthropology, director of the Center for Sustainability and coordinator of the environmental studies program, will deliver his Outstanding Professor lecture April 18, 11am to noon, at the Fullerton Marriott. Bock’s classes CSUF Musical Theatre Students Back from NYC Nine Cal State Fullerton theatre arts majors are back from New York City where they took to the stage at Snapple Theater Center to showcase their talents and possibly launch their careers on Broadway and beyond. As a preview, the undergrads, all expected to earn a B.F.A. in theatre artsmusical theatre this spring, previously performed for members of the MAMM Alliance, an affinity group that provides resources for visiting artists and special programming for CSUF’s College of the Arts. Wareh is one of the county’s leaders cited by this year's OC Metro’s annual “40 Under 40” for her humanitarian work helping Syrian refugees. “Dr. Bock has a passion for his students, and it transcends beyond the paycheck,” the 29-year-old artist and environmentalist added. “He helps you guide yourself to the questions you need to ask, and he is there beside you to piece them together. He wants to share his ideals, findings about the world, and environmental ethics and standards. And, his passion is contagious.” Bock, who has a Ph.D. and M.S. in anthropology from the University of New Mexico as well as a B.A. in political science from Rhodes College, delivers the annual Outstanding Professor Lecture April 18 at the Fullerton Marriott. The 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. lecture, “Being and Becoming in Botswana,” is free and open to the public. “I think my research leads to some new understandings of childhood that move us beyond the conceptualization that grew from our own society,” said Bock, whose research for the past 25 years has focused on the influences of social, ecological and cultural contexts on children’s development among the Okavango Delta Peoples of Botswana. “For instance, I see the distinction between work and play to be a false dichotomy. In many places and times, children’s activities are embedded within a larger cultural context, and they may be participating in things that appear to be play but are actually producing or preparing a child to be productive later in life.” Bock is “an exceptional teacher and researcher, yes, but also a most effective leader for his department and the campus,” said Thomas P. Klammer, emeritus dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, who hired Bock in 2000. “He makes us proud.” On teaching, Bock, director of the university’s Center for Sustainability, said: “It gives me an opportunity to connect with younger people, whose minds are alive and open. It energizes me and gets me thinking as well. These bags are distributed through police and fire depts., ambulance, medical services, and by nonprofit organizations assisting victims / survivors of crimes. Each child or adult victim emergency bag is filled by crime survivors. These volunteers know what it is to be victimized and which items will be most helpful during the crucial 48-72 hour time frame after a trauma. MID APRIL 2013 LOCAL NEWS Antibiotic Resistance Research Garners Biotech Award for CSUF Biology Major A study of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria that causes lethal infections has won Cal State Fullerton grad student David Lin the Master’s Level Award for outstanding research at the student colloquium of the Southern California Branch of the American Society for Microbiology. “This award shows that I can contribute to the scientific community and that hard work and diligence pay off,” said the biology major, whose research is titled “Overcoming Resistance to Clinically Important Aminoglycoside Antibiotics: Search for Inhibitors of Resistance Enzymes.” Marcelo E. Tolmasky, professor of biological science and director of CSUF’s Center for Applied Biotechnology Studies, is Lin’s faculty mentor. “Some bacteria become resistant to antibiotics by creating enzymes that can disable our antibiotics. For more information on items that can be donated to the Goodwill trucks, or amikacin, a powerful antibiotic that was once used extensively to treat infections,” explained Lin. “The ultimate goal of my research is to create a combination therapy where an inhibitor, coupled with amikacin, can overcome this resistance to amikacin.” Lin earned a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from UC Davis, in 2009 and plans to pursue a doctorate following completion of his master’s degree at Cal State Fullerton. “I hope to continue doing important and relevant research in the biomedical sciences,” he said. As a winner of the research poster competition, Lin receives an all-expense-paid trip, funded by bioMerieux Inc., to attend the May 18-21 American Society for Microbiology national conference in Denver. He will present his research May 21 to the general meeting. Microbiologists from around the world attend the annual conference. Fullerton College Centennial Photography Exhibit May 5th The Fullerton College Centennial Photography Exhibit opening reception will be held May 5th from 1pm to 4pm at the La Habra Art Gallery, 215 N. Orange St., La Habra. An awards ceremony will be held at 2pm. The exhibit features work of past/present faculty and students of the photography department and Centennial Photo Contest winners. The exhibition runs through May 30th on weekends, noon to 4pm.
