Page 18 FULLERTON OBSERVER LOCAL NEWS AUGUST 2010 Carl Binder Retires Story and Photo by Jere Greene Over sixty-five friends and fellow employees came by the Fullerton Senior Center to wish longtime Front Desk Receptionist Carl Binder a fond farewell. Carl has decided to retire and spend more time with his wife, Irma. He held the position for over eleven years. Coco Barragan from SeniorServ, the organization that provides low-cost lunches at the Center, provided two sheet cakes, along with punch and coffee for everyone. Center Supervisor Eloisa Espinoza and John Clemons from Parks and Recreation were on hand to recognize Carl and present him with a plaque to commemorate his years of service. Carl started with the City in October of 1998 after leaving Hughes as a Cost Analyst, and this background served him as he maintained the records for the Senior Center operations. Many nice things were said about Carl, but the most meaningful was that he will be missed. FULLERTON CRIME LOG w/Jeanne Hoffa Compiled from interviews with the Fullerton Police Department and daily crime records of the Fullerton Police Department. •BRAIN AND SKELETONS VANISH FROM FCC: Two skeletons and a model brain disappeared from Fullerton College before the 4th of July weekend, according to Dr. Bruce Cordell, the Dean of the Natural Sciences Division. The replacement value is $8,000 to $9,000. Cordell described the deluxe dualsex muscular skeleton, plastic skeleton and model brain as essential tools used to help students learn anatomy and physiology They were being stored in the temporary Science Village classrooms set up on the south side of Chapman Ave. awaiting the department’s move to its new home in Dec. Anyone who sees any life-size skeletons or model brains in the vicinity of Fullerton College is encouraged to call the Science Dept at 714-992-7043. •LAW OFFICES TAGGED IN GOLD: The Law offices where Fullerton Deputy City Attorney Elena Gerli works with dozens of other lawyers was vandalized with gold spray paint July 19th, according to police reports. Windows to the offices of Jones and Roach, Jones and Mayer at 3777 N. Harbor Blvd. were painted with "DODSB", "WC", "TAK", "MACK" and "MDC" Fullerton Police Senior Cadet Raymond Aguilar said. "DAZEY" was written across a tree out front. •PET TURKEY ASSAULTED BY INTRUDER: A family’s pet turkey was assaulted by a stranger who jumped the backyard fence at the home on the 4000 block of Franklin Ave July 13th, according to Fullerton Police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich. The turkey’s 34-year-old adopted mother came home at 5:15pm after a threehour absence and found her back window had been shattered, Goodrich said. Her turkey, named “Blue”, was bleeding in spots where its feathers had been cut and apparently plucked, Goodrich said. Blue is 6-months old and is expected to survive. •LO-JACK LURES COPS TO CAR THIEVES: The Lo-Jack unit in a Fullerton Police Officer’s car began to signal June 7th as he drove near Yorba Linda Blvd. and the 57 Freeway. The officer followed the signal south to the Moonraker Apts on Nutwood Ave., where he found a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder that had been reported stolen out of LA. The car was backed into a parking space and plates had been removed. The officer waited nearby and watched until two people got into the car and eventually arrested a 22-year-old man and 21-year-old woman from Arcata, California, for auto theft. •BANDANA WEARING MAN ROBS MOBIL STATION: An unarmed man wrapped his face in a bandana and went in the Mobil Station on Yorba Linda Blvd. and demanded cash on July 7th. The masked suspect, described as a 5’9”, 210 pound Hispanic man, had dark eyes, a black and white bandana, a black hoodie and jeans adorned with writing across the front. He left the scene running on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. •WOMAN BATTLING CANCER ENDS LIFE: A 61-year-old Fullerton woman who had battled brain cancer for seven years shot herself in the head. She had lost much of the use of her body after surgery and radiation to remove the slow growing cancer. The former phone company employee who lived on Sequoia Ave. had difficulty with everyday activities. Unbeknownst to her husband, she had taken a bus to a gun store in March, purchased a .38 and had taken shooting lessons. Her husband returned home from a bicycling trip and found her lying in front of the TV in their living room, which was still on. Police estimate she died on July 4th. She is survived by her husband of 8 years and a 39-year-old son who lives in Brea. •BICYCLING THIEF AWAKENS VICTIM: A man awoke to clanking noises that came from the back of his truck in his driveway on the 3800 block of Madonna Dr. July 7th. He went outside and saw a slight man in his 50’s jump from his truck and onto a bicycle with a handful of tools he had just pilfered. When the victim confronted the suspect, the biker pointed a dark gun at him, mumbled something unintelligible, and escaped into the night. The suspect is 5’5” and 120 pounds. •MAN TRIES TO FILL FORGED PRESCRIPTIONS: A man tried to fill two prescriptions at Walgreens on Chapman Ave. that looked fishy to an employee July 15th. The employee called police when the doctor’s DEA number didn’t match the number on the back of the prescription. Police arrived and arrested the 34-year-old Fullerton man at 2:32pm. The prescriptions were for the diabetes drug Januvia and the asthma aid Advair. Another man was arrested at the same location after he dropped off a prescription an employee said was fake. The 37-year-old was arrested for trying to fill a forged prescription. •BANK ALERTS BEST BUY TO EMBEZZLER: A Wells Fargo employee called Best Buy when one of their employees deposited checks into his personal account that had been written out to the company July 15th. The suspect allegedly deposited $1,500 in checks inscribed with the notation "computer services.” Stephen Knittel, an 18-year-old from Colton, FULLERTON CRIME LOG continued was arrested for embezzlement at 2:04pm. •SCHOOL COMPUTER THIEVES: A witness saw several boys sneak out of a classroom at Nicholas Jr. High with laptops under their arms and called the cops June 26. The hooded kids crawled out of room 32 after smashing a window, then ran to two dark vehicles waiting nearby. The cars fled the scene before police arrived. Police found the vandals had pried open two padlocked storage cabinets where the computers were stored. Laptops were also stolen from room 20 at Woodcrest Elementary. At Pacific Drive vandals cracked the windows of rooms 3 and 14 on July 4th. Tools used in the auto body program were stolen from Fullerton High School July 16th. •VANDALS DUMP PAINT IN CAR: An unknown suspect dumped white paint inside of a green 1998 Plymouth Neon that was parked on the 500 block of Princeton Ave. July 6th. The car's owner told police she had left the windows down. •Vandals Bathe School in Paint: Graffiti vandals painted 15 doors at Nicolas Jr. High July 19th. Vandals also swathed black paint across four sets of windows, two drinking fountains, four lunch tables and on the walkway to the front office. The painters wrote the letters "RV" backwards and the letters "D" and "ZG", Fullerton Police Senior Cadet Raymond Aguilar said. The damage is estimated at $300. Vandals struck Maple Elementary July 18th, painting "SICK" in 8' by 5' letters across the handball court and painted the library, the west side utility boxes and the gutters with black marker and white paint. Damage is estimated at $200. •MAIL AND O2 TANKS PILE UP ON DOORSTEP: A woman on the 2200 block of Chapman called police when mail and oxygen tanks began to pile up on her neighbors doorstep July 17th. Police forced open the door and found the 67-year-old woman had died, Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said. •THIEVES STALK BUSINESSES NEAR MIDNIGHT: Employees at International Trading Company on the 1400 block of Walnut came to work July 17 and found the locks had been cut off of their storage containers. Security camera footage showed four men in an SUV patrolling the company’s parking lot at 10pm the night before. The men came back at midnight, cut the locks, closed the container door then left the scene. 20 min. later they returned and searched through the storage containers, but apparently didn't find anything worth stealing, so they smashed the window on a Mercedes Benz parked nearby. That same night, thieves cut the locks on storage units at Rancho Performance Transaxles at 115 E. Elm Ave., less than 3/4 of a mile from International Trading. They pried locks on the gates and [storage] containers. There was nothing inside but greasy transmission cores inside. Thieves had successfully burgled a pump and an engine from the business next door to Rancho Performance Transaxles July 5th, according to a company employee, who asked that his company name not be used. The vandals had tried to cut the locks to a fenced in area behind the shop, and ended up pulling the fence up to get inside. The engine weighed between 60 to 100 pounds. •MEN IN VAN STRIKE VENDING MACHINES: Sex Predator Suspect Sought On Thurs., July 8, 2010 at about 2:20am, a suspect was caught on surveillance video assaulting a lone female at CVS Pharmacy, 2200 N. Harbor, in Fullerton. The suspect is described as a white male, 18-21 years old, 5’9”, 160 lbs, with brown hair and a British accent. The suspect left the store in a black truck. Fullerton Detective Kathryn Hamel said, “due to the brazen public nature of this assault, we are concerned that there may be other victims of this suspect.” Anyone with information about this incident or others, or anyone who thinks they know the suspect should contact Detective Hamel at 714-738-5327. The video file is available for viewing at the Fullerton Police Dept. on the corner of Highland and Commonwealth. Two men pried open the vending machines in the Moonraker Apts and fled in a plumbing van July 15th. The suspects were described as being in their mid-30s. •BURGLARS STRIKE HOMES ACROSS TOWN: Associated Road: An intruder broke into a home on the 3000 block June 28 by climbing through a bedroom window. A house on the same cul-de-sac was burgled July 8. A burglar stole two laptops from a home on the 2500 block by going through an unlocked door in the back. A home on the same street was burgled July 20. City Pointe Apts: Computers were stolen July 5th. Olive Ave: A bicycle was stolen from the backyard in a home on the 2400 block July 7. Highland Creek Apts: An intruder tore open a window screen and slipped in a window July 14 while the couple who lived there went for a walk, Fullerton Police Sgt. Andrew Goodrich said. The burglar stole more than $500 in cash and a checkbook from the pair who are in their 20s. Another home in the complex was burgled July 8th. Deerpark Dr.: A laptop was stolen from a 32-year-old man at his apartment on the 2200 block July 14th. Police found no sign of forced entry. Lakes Apts: Intruders forced open the front door July 15th while the victims, two men and a woman in their 20s went to the spa. The victims lost cell phones, laptops, medication, purses, wallets, clothing, jewelry, computer hardware, and $400 in cash, Fullerton Police Senior Cadet Raymond Aguilar said. The total loss was $5,000. Wilshire Ave: A home was burgled on the 200 block July 18th. Riverside Dr.: On July 19th, a woman told police someone broke into her home on the 1200 block by entering the back window. Cameo Dr.: An intruder climbed through another back window on July 19th on the 1200 block. Placentia Ave.: A home was burgled on the 1300 block July 20th and again on the 21st. Idylwood Apts: Three cars had their windows smashed July 21st. •GOAT APPREHENDED: A report of a goat on the street in the park near Bastanchury Road and Parks Ave. ended with the goat being "apprehended" July 14th. •DOLL SET ON FIRE ON DOORSTEP: On July 21st, a doll that had been lit on fire was left at the front doorstep at a home on the 800 block of Clarion Drive. •FOOD INTRUDER: On the 2200 block of Truslow Ave., an intruder climbed through a window of a back house, opened a freezer, ate the food inside and left the freezer door open according to police reports July 19th. •JUNE STATISTICS: The Police Dept. received 4,246 emergency calls on 911 lines in June. In addition, the dept. handled an additional 11,290 general information calls for service. Officers were dispatched on 3,810 calls for service and initiated 2,938 additional contacts. There were 1,236 criminal reports taken and 533 persons arrested for various criminal offenses. The Downtown Echo Team arrested 23 persons for being drunk in public, 7 drunk drivers, and wrote 49 open container citations, 9 urinating in public citations, and 43 jaywalking citations. Two motor officers have been assigned to assist with enforcement issues in the Downtown during summer. The officers have issued 404 citations so far; of these 209 were for jaywalking. According to military statistics, 32 soldiers took their own lives last month. Twenty-one of those were on active duty, while 11 were reservists with inactive status. Last year already broke the annual record for Army suicides with 245 service men and women killing themselves.
