YWCA Thurmond Scholarships
Three students at California State
University, Fullerton (CSUF) received a total
of $6,000 in scholarships from the YWCA
North Orange County’s Thurmond
Scholarship Fund, an outreach dedicated to
helping women 24 years and older pursue a
college education. The recipients were recognized
at the Y’s annual meeting June 26 at the
Coyote Hills Country Club in Fullerton.
Three full-time students, Aihanh Truong,
Kristy Haffner, and Eileen Marie Anguiana,
were awarded $2000 scholarships. After
reviewing over 30 applications in March,
chairwoman Joan Mears and committee
members Nissa Foster and Catherine Van
Riette directed ten semifinalists to the
Thurmond family; Don Thurmond, his sister
Carol Wells and his wife Roseanne
Thurmond selected the final three recipients.
Don Thurmond and Carol Wells carry on
the legacy of their mother, late community
activist Ruth Thurmond, who dedicated her
life in assisting economically disadvantaged
women achieve their educational goals. Ruth
Thurmond founded the scholarship committee
in the late 1990s, after decades of advocacy
for women’s rights and involvement with
the YWCA North Orange County.
Aihanh Truong came to the US at the age
of thirty-eight. She bravely started her life in
her new country with her eighteen-monthold
son. She soon began attending Fullerton
College, hoping to set a good example for her
son to follow. Currently, she is majoring in
Human Services.
Kristy Haffner, with an Associate Teacher
Certificate from the Social Sciences Division
at Fullerton College, aspires to graduate with
an Associate’s degree in Mathematics.
Ultimately, she hopes to earn a Bachelor’s
degree in Child Development and a multiple
subject teaching credential. Through her various
experiences in college, she dreams to
make a difference in the lives of children.
Eileen Anguiano’s previous life experiences
hindered her from pursuing her educational
goals, she continued forward with the
support from her family and friends. Now a
single mother of four, she reflects,
“Perseverance and determination has given
me the will power to continue to work hard
for what my family deserves -an education to
live a higher quality life.” Eileen started
attending Fullerton College in July of 2008
and has completed fifty- three units. With a
major in Human Services at California State
probation officer.
