You?<br />
Eleven million jobs are currently<br />
provided to Americans by the<br />
healthcare industry. By 2008, this<br />
number is supposed to grow by 26<br />
percent, creating 2.8 million new<br />
jobs! Combine that with serious<br />
health care profession shortages<br />
and the possibilities for students<br />
interested in practicing medicine are<br />
endless!<br />
Of the top 10 fastest growing<br />
professions according to the US<br />
Department of Labor for 2002-<br />
2012, seven are health careers. They<br />
include medical assistants, physician<br />
assistants, social and human service<br />
personnel, home health aides,<br />
medical records/health information<br />
specialists, physical therapy aides<br />
and physical therapy assistants. This<br />
increasing need has been sparked by<br />
many trends in healthcare including:<br />
• An aging population.<br />
• Improved pharmaceuticals<br />
and research into new<br />
pharmaceuticals.<br />
• Emerging health careers such as<br />
forensics and complementary care.<br />
• Global health issues such as<br />
infectious disease.<br />
• Increasing demand for emergency<br />
preparedness.<br />
Summer <strong>Health</strong> Careers Camps<br />
High school and junior high school<br />
students from the Norfolk area will<br />
have the opportunity to attend a<br />
health careers camp this summer<br />
and to learn about the vast array of<br />
various health careers.<br />
Northern Nebraska Area <strong>Health</strong><br />
Education Center (AHEC) will be<br />
hosting a Summer <strong>Health</strong> Careers<br />
Camp July 11 to July 15 for grades 8-<br />
12 (2004-2005 school year). Also, on<br />
the calendar this year is a Hispanic/<br />
Latino Summer <strong>Health</strong> Career Camp<br />
July 6 to July 8 for grades 9-12.<br />
There will be hands-on activities,<br />
fi rst aid training, team building skills,<br />
and tours of local health care facilities<br />
including <strong>Faith</strong> <strong>Regional</strong> <strong>Health</strong><br />
<strong>Services</strong>. The camp agenda also<br />
includes guest speakers in the health<br />
care fi eld and representatives from<br />
Nebraska colleges and universities.<br />

Finding The First Job<br />
In the current job market where<br />
unemployment rate is high, fresh<br />
graduates and school leavers should<br />
be realistic in their search for jobs.<br />
They should not have high hope in<br />
getting the ‘right’ job at their fi rst<br />
attempt, but should aim to gain<br />
worthwhile experience from their<br />
fi rst job.<br />
Indeed, the chances of fi nding<br />
the ‘right’ job at the fi rst time are<br />
small, unless for graduates whose<br />
qualifi cations decide specifi cally<br />
what kind of job they are going<br />
to do after graduation. In the real<br />
work life, we see many people<br />
