Israel-Palestinian Project
On April 25, students in Reading 2 engaged in
a videoconference with Bethlehem University
students, Palestinian Occupied Territories.
Through this dialogue participants on both
sides of the globe gained a better cultural
understanding of each other. Some students
have continued this dialogue through the use
of the Internet and formed long distance
friendships that have further enhanced
understanding of the political conflict in
their country as well as day to day
challenges. One Palestinian student stated
that education for them was a privilege, “We
look at going to school like you look at going
to the mall.” The Israeli-Palestinian research
will continue next school year with a new
group of students who will build on the
foundation of information and understanding
gathered by the students from the 2009-2010
and 2010-2011 school years.
Just Read, Families! is a summer reading
program which provides parents with information
about actively reading with their children during
the summer months. Governor Bush first
proclaimed May 2003 as Just Read, Families!
month.
Research shows that children who do not continue
reading through the summer can lose a month or
more of progress made during the school year. By
encouraging their children to read, parents are
playing a critical role in achieving our goal of
having every child reading at or above grade level
by 2012. Now is the time to take advantage of the
many activities and resources available on this
website. Keep your children engaged in reading!
Children are a precious gift, and the opportunity
to inspire a love of reading is both a great honor
and an extraordinary responsibility. With your
help, we can make Florida's reading goals a
reality.
ABC book of Florida
Mrs. Goodman’s seventh grade reading class
teamed with Mrs. Cloud’s first grade reading
class for book buddies throughout the year. In
their culminating project, the classes created
an ABC book of Florida facts. The seventh
grade students researched their assigned topics
and wrote a paragraph, while the first grade
students illustrated the topics. Pictured here is
the front cover of the book, a copy of which
will remain in the school’s library.
