Call for <strong>Alumni</strong> Nominations<br />

alumni achievement awards<br />

The <strong>Alumni</strong> Achievement Awards are<br />

given annually during the alumni reunion<br />

weekend program to honor distinguished<br />

alumni who have made significant contributions<br />

in their communities through their<br />

careers and/or community service. <strong>Alumni</strong><br />

Achievement recipients are outstanding<br />

role models for <strong>Framingham</strong> State students<br />

today. Any person or group of persons may<br />

nominate an alumnus of the college for<br />

this recognition award. Nomination forms<br />

are available on the alumni Web site at<br />

www.framingham.edu/alumni.<br />

The <strong>Alumni</strong> Association Board of Directors<br />

serves to support alumni engagement and<br />

involvement at <strong>Framingham</strong> State College.<br />

<strong>Alumni</strong> board members selected to join the<br />

board serve for a three-year term and commit<br />

to attending five meetings per year and<br />

alumni events, including homecoming and<br />

reunion. <strong>Alumni</strong> who may be interested<br />

in joining the board may submit a letter of<br />

interest and resume for consideration.<br />

<strong>Alumni</strong> Recognized<br />

for Achievements<br />

The <strong>Alumni</strong> Achievement Awards are<br />

presented annually to recognize alumni<br />

who have utilized their education and<br />

training at <strong>Framingham</strong> State College to<br />

achieve noteworthy accomplishments<br />

and success both in their careers and<br />

in their communities. This year, six<br />

distinguished alumni were recognized<br />

during the alumni general assembly<br />

program as part of reunion weekend.<br />

Marguerite “Peggie” Anderson ’64 is<br />

a highly successful entrepreneur. After<br />

graduating from <strong>Framingham</strong> State with her<br />

bachelor’s degree in home economics, she<br />

began working in the family business, which<br />

sold stationery and cards. That store is now<br />

The Paper Store, Inc., a thriving landmark<br />

business with 22 locations around the<br />

region. Since 2000, Peggie has been a<br />

consultant to regional retail businesses<br />

in the areas of buying, merchandising<br />

and operational management.<br />

Gonzalo Puigbo ’04 is vice president and<br />

regional sales manager for Eastern Bank.<br />

Prior to that, he served as the producing<br />

sales manager at Citizens Bank, where he<br />

received the President Club Award for 2004<br />

and 2005 as the top community residential<br />

loan officer nationwide. Outside of work,<br />

Gonzalo teaches money management skills to<br />

moderate- and low-income families and volunteers<br />

as an ESL teacher to new immigrants.<br />

Roberta “Bert” (Cooney) Burns ’59 is a<br />

clinical supervisor of student teachers at<br />

Boston College School of Education and was<br />

an elementary school teacher in the Natick<br />

Public Schools for 31 years. She earned a<br />

BS in education at <strong>Framingham</strong> State and later<br />

did graduate work at Wheelock College. Bert<br />

volunteers in an aftercare program for women<br />

who are incarcerated in MCI <strong>Framingham</strong>.<br />

Gerald Darsch ’84 is director of the<br />

Department of Defense Combat Feeding<br />

Directorate at the U. S. Army’s Soldier<br />

Research, Development, and Engineering<br />

Center in Natick, Mass. Gerry has been<br />

instrumental in bringing about numerous<br />

improvements in the quality and distribution<br />

of food supplies for combat troops,<br />

including the evolution of the Meals Ready<br />

to Eat (MRE) program. Gerry is the Combat<br />

Feeding Program spokesperson to the<br />

national and international media.<br />

Jennifer Ohop ’97 is the staff naturalist at<br />

the Norcross Wildlife Sanctuary, located<br />

in Monson, Mass. She began her job soon<br />

after graduating summa cum laude from<br />

<strong>Framingham</strong> State with her bachelor of science<br />

in biology. Her interests include birds,<br />

dragonflies, reptiles, amphibians and large<br />

predators. Jennifer volunteers and is the vice<br />

president of a local land group, Opacum<br />

Land Trust, a nonprofit conservation group<br />

that protects more than 600 acres of land.<br />

Christopher MacDonald-Dennis ’92 is<br />

assistant dean of the undergraduate college<br />

and director of intercultural affairs at Bryn<br />

Mawr College in Pennsylvania. In this position,<br />

Christopher coordinates programs that<br />

explore and support diversity. “[The Student<br />

Affairs staff] made an indelible mark on<br />

me and I knew that I wanted to have that<br />

same effect in the lives of college students.”<br />

Christopher was the 2008 Pennsylvania<br />

Fellow at the Center for Progressive<br />

Leadership and has won awards for his<br />

work as a mentor and administrator.<br />
