The exhaust gas norm (Euro-Norm, Pollution class) sets emission limits that must be
respected by new road vehicles in terms of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxide (Nox),
hydrocarbons (HC) and particles (PM) levels. Limit values depend on kind of motor (petrol or
diesel engine) and vehicle (passenger vehicles, trucks and buses, bicycles and motor-bikes)
and are subject to increasing restrictions. Values are measured during type testing in driving
cycle. Vehicles manufacturers must guarantee compliance with limit values for a certain
period and for a certain kilometre range. This is done through an in service survey with call
back device in the event of systematic mistakes. Besides, for some vehicles, emissions of fuel
evaporation are restricted and an onboard diagnosis (OBD) is foreseen. The Euro IV Norm has
been valid all over Europe since 1 st January.
