How are you ending the year?
A team of 17 individuals, consisting of
Third Infantry Division Soldiers, Family
Members and members of the local
CrossFit community, participated in the
last Garage Games CrossFit competition
of the year called Reindeer Games 2012
in Augusta, Ga., Dec. 15 and 16.
“The military and the CrossFit in
Hinesville community are almost like a
Family,” said Sgt. Jack Baker, 2nd Battalion,
7th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armor Brigade
Combat Team, 3rd ID. “I could train with
the chief of police or a fire fighter, the title
goes out the window and we’re all athletes.”
Sergeant Baker, who has been training
in CrossFit for four years and placed 20
of 50 competitors in the Men’s RX Division,
We are the Army's Home
introduced the sport to his wife Courtney
two years ago.
“I decided to compete because I wanted
to test my strength against some of the
best CrossFit athletes in the region – some
who went to the Games this past year,”
said Courtney who placed 9 of 10 in the
Women’s RX Division. “And, even though
I didn’t place, I needed something that
would challenge me and provoke me to
amp up my training in certain areas. I
Increasing the involvement
of Family Members in the
Soldier’s daily lives has always
been a goal of the 703rd
Brigade Support Battalion
‘Maintainers’ command team
and on Nov. 30, they made
sure to do just that by hosting
the battalion Turkey Bowl on
the 4th Infantry Brigade
Combat Team complex in Fort
Stewart, Ga.
The event kicked off with a
mass promotion ceremony
where 22 Soldiers were promoted
and 89 Soldiers received
awards from their accomplishments
during the battalion’s
rotation at the Joint
Readiness Training Center in
Fort Polk La., last month.
Family Members were invited
to attend and assist during
the promotion of their loved
ones. “It’s always a bit more
special when Family Members
can be a part of the promotions,”
stated the newly promoted
Sgt. Diamond Madison-
Banks, the orderly room noncommissioned
officer in
charge from Company C,
703rd BSB, who was promoted
by her husband.
After the promotion and
awards, the Turkey Bowl
games were underway. First
there was an inter-battalion
tournament where the companies
competed for the battalion
mace.
December 6, the Fort Stewart Youth Services SKIES
Unlimited Program’s Taekwondo Class held their
Student of the Year presentations. As the number of
awards presented to the students and Families indicated,
year 2012 has been the best year yet for the
Taekwondo Class.
During the ceremony, every student was presented
with a Super TKD Student Trophy for the great participation
and support each provided to the class.
Then, the following students and Families received the
listed awards, trophies, cups, and/or certificates for
their unprecedented performances throughout the
year.
The year’s top award of Student of the Year went to
Tia Gonzalez (11) for her tremendous effort and dedication
she applied to the art of Taekwondo. Throughout
the year, Tia has earned the Student of the Month Award
in July; the Best Kicker Award in February; and the
Outstanding Student Award in March and November.
Tia also competed in the 2012 Liberty and the 2012
Georgia Showdown Taekwondo Championships.
She earned one first place and
for her super performances.
Additionally, Tia continued to work
with junior members of the class,
improving their abilities and helping
them prepare and pass their
promotion tests. Tia’s spectacular
performance throughout 2012
definitely displayed what is expected
of a true martial artist and earned
her the title of Student of the Year!
2012 competition in
Augusta, Ga., Dec. 15.
The championship game was
between Headquarters and
Headquarters Company and the
defending Turkey Bowl champs,
Company B. After thirty minutes
of competitive football, HHC was
crowned this year’s champions.
“It’s always fun to compete for
the battalion mace and spend
time with our Family and
friends,” said Spc. Sergio
Rodriguez, a light wheel mechanic
with the HHC championship
team.
Following the mace tournament,
the officers played versus
the non-commissioned officers.
Although the game was a close
match, the NCOs walked away
victorious and this year’s champions.
CrossFit athlete Michael
Berhane, who competed alongside
his teammates and placed
38 of 50 in Men’s RX Division, said
that he prepared himself ahead
of time for the competition.
“I trained at least two-to-three
times a day and practiced technical
movements like the snatch,”
he said. “At our box, status doesn’t
matter; we’re like a Family. We all
come together to help each other
achieve our goals to pass our limits.”
For one Soldier, Capt. Angel
Figueroa, 385th MP Bn., who
injured his shoulder during training,
placed 32 of 50 in the Men’s
RX Division.
“I believe it was a pinched
nerve in my left shoulder,” he
said. “Originally, I placed 40, but
some didn’t finish. For me, [the
sport] is a lifestyle and a way to
test myself while finding new limits
to my ability then learning to
overcome them.”
Their coaches, Tina and Rowdy
Carson who own the local CrossFit
gym in Hinesville, along with
other members of the gym, supported
their team members from
the sidelines.
“The team effort was astonishing.
It was like a Family thing, the
support system was awesome,”
Tina said. “The programming was
preparing the athletes for the
competition a month ahead of
time. If one athlete was not working
out, they were encouraging
others from the floor.”
For athlete Ozlem Fordham,
who participated in both the
Women’s Scaled Division and
Women’s Team Scaled Division,
said that it’s not about the size of
your muscles but how big your
heart is.
“It’s always good to know individuals
whose hearts are in the
same thing like CrossFit,” she
said. “It made me realize that it’s
not the size of your muscle that
count, but about the size of your
heart. It’s true what they that
‘your heart is the biggest muscle
you have.’ It’s really about your
heart that’s pushing you through
this. It was an amazing experience
to be a part of such a big
competition, and I got to know
my team members on a one-onone
basis.”
As you may know, this is the
last edition of the year,
which makes this a perfect
opportunity to write about
college football, one of my favorite
sports topic.
I have mixed emotions during
this time of year. On one hand, I’m happy because it’s
the holiday season. On the other hand, I’m sad because
the end of football season is rapidly approaching.
As quick therapy, there are 33 college bowl games
between today and Jan. 7, which is the day Notre Dame
will thump Alabama in the National Championship.
I have a good idea what you "Roll Tide" fans want
to say to me at this point. Feel free to make your own
prediction.
Of course, I won’t watch all of the bowl games.
Besides the national championship game, which bowl
games are you most excited to watch?
As I look at the bowl schedule, the Gator Bowl
between Northwestern and Mississippi State looks
intriguing. Don’t laugh, the last couple of years the
most entertaining bowl games I have watched includ-
Five other bowl games that look interesting are the
Fiesta Bowl with Oregon against Kansas State. Will
Kansas State be able to stop Oregon’s offense?
The Cotton Bowl should be a high scoring affair
with former Big 12 Conference rivals Oklahoma and
Texas A&M hooking up. Other high scoring games
could be the Holiday Bowl with UCLA verus Baylor,
the Pinstripe Bowl with West Virginia against Syracuse,
and I think Clemson can handle LSU in the Chick-fil-A
Bowl.
I’m taking Oregon, Clemson, A&M, Baylor, West
Virginia and Northwestern to win their first bowl game
since 1949.
With two weeks remaining in the NFL regular season,
three individual single-season records could be
broken.
Adrian Peterson has 1,812 rushing yards and is 294
yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single season
rushing title of 2,105 yards.
Calvin Johnson has 1,667 receiving yards and is 181
yards short of breaking Jerry Rice’s record of 1,848
yards.
Two players have a chance to break the single-season
sack record of 22.5 held by Michael Strahan. The
Aldon Smith, of the 49ers, and J.J. Watt, of the Titans,
The Frontline 3C
End of the year football chatter
both stand at 20 sacks each.
Here are three things that may only interest me:
Firstly, Brandon Marshall is the first NFL player to
catch more than 100 passes in a season with two different
teams, first the Broncos and now with the
Bears.
Secondly, the Baseball Writers of America 2013 Hall
of Fame class will be announced on January 8. If I had
a vote, here’s who I would vote for: Barry Bonds, Roger
Clemens, Julio Franco, Rafael Palmeiro, Mark McGwire,
Mike Piazza, Sammy Sosa, Craig Biggio and Jeff
Bagwell.
I know you're saying, “These guys cheated.”
No, they’re all in good standing with Major League
Baseball; otherwise, they wouldn’t be on the ballot
like Pete Rose continues to be.
Of course, not all of the players I listed will get
elected. It’s extremely hard to get elected into the
baseball hall of fame. Last year, only one player – Barry
Larkin -- was elected.
Lastly, the NFL’s 2013 hall of fame class will also be
announced early next year. Of the finalists, here’s who
I think should be voted in: Chris Carter, Tim Brown,
Jerome Bettis, Warren Sapp, Charles Haley, Larry Allen
and Jonathan Ogden.
See you next year!
