other pursuits probably took rather more of his attention than his studies! Tours in Aden, Colchester and Singapore followed. From 1974 he was a Defence Attaché in Ottawa, and on his return to the UK, he commanded a Signal Squadron in Northern Ireland. After leaving the army in 1979, Ventham joined Marconi and had a very successful career in the television broadcasting division of that company. Following Marconi’s demise, he retrained as an Independent Financial Advisor and worked in that role until he became seriously ill with cancer. His great loves included country pursuits and sailing. He hunted with various beagle packs throughout his life. About ten years ago, he became involved with the work of the London Sailing Project. He sailed frequently with groups of disadvantaged and disabled youngsters, with many of whom he achieved a great rapport. He died on 26 February 2008 and as a very high church Anglican, his funeral took the form of a requiem mass at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Portsmouth, where he had worshipped for many years. DENNIS ALLAN VINCENT (1946) Denis Vincent was born on 27 November 1922 in Torquay and was educated at Torquay Grammar School. After studying at the Devon Technical College he enrolled as an articled pupil with a local architectural practice, and after military service with the RAF and the RNVR he came up to Fitzwilliam in 1946 to read Architecture. After graduation in 1948, he remained in residence to complete the examinations necessary to gain exemption from RIBA requirements and then began work with the Eastern Electricity Board, based in Ipswich. He remained in Suffolk for the rest of his life and died on 9 November 2007. MARTIN ROBERT WHITWORTH (1946) Martin Whitworth was born on 8 February 1924 in Reading and was educated at Reading School. After three years’ war service with the Navy during which he commanded a minesweeper, he came up to Fitzwilliam in 1946 to read Architecture, graduating in 1949 and completing the Diploma in Architecture in 1951. After working in Lancashire and Cambridge, he settled in Bury St Edmunds, where he set up his own architectural practice. He was Diocesan Architect for St Edmundsbury and Ipswich for many years, as well as being a school governor and a County Councillor. His main relaxation was sailing. He died on 3 June 2008. THE REVD RICHARD HUGH DRYHURST WILLIAMS (1955) Richard Williams was born on 16 November 1931. He was educated at Ysgol Ardwyn at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he read Classics, and came up to Fitzwilliam as a member of Westminster College in 1955 to read Theology. He graduated in 1957 and was called to the pastorate of Woodstock and several other rural congregations of the Presbyterian Church of Wales in North Pembrokeshire and remained there for the rest of his life, often taking four or five services on a Sunday and becoming a beloved pastor in a relatively remote rural area. He retired formally in 2001, but continued to preach until deteriorating health compelled him to go to a nursing home early in 2007. He died on 7 July 2008. WILLIAM EDWARD BARLOW WORDSWORTH (1930) William Wordsworth was born on 28 November 1911 in Totley Rise, Sheffield and was educated at King Edward VII School, Sheffield and Chesterfield Grammar School. He came up to Fitzwilliam in 1930 to read Law, graduating in 1933. During his final year he was Captain of Boats. He qualified as a solicitor in 1936 and went into practice. Wordsworth had hoped to be able to attend the opening of the new boathouse in September 2007, as the oldest living Captain of Boats, but was taken ill and could not come. He died on 14 November 2007. Correction In the 2008 issue of the Journal, the entry for the Revd Thomas Ivan Musgrave should read that he retired to Leamington Spa and died on 26 September 2006. We apologise for this mistake. 77
