Fall/Winter ’08/’09<br />

I have just finished previewing the<br />

feature articles for this edition of<br />

Directions, and if you can set aside the<br />

time, I believe you will be as fascinated as<br />

I have been by the collecting passions of<br />

William Fordyce ’52, Joanna Schoff ’51,<br />

Rich Ulmer ’60, Rachel Newmann<br />

Schwartz ’89, and current student Blake<br />

Bortnick ’13. In her introduction, our<br />

editor, Rebecca Anderson, sheds some<br />

light on possible motives for collecting<br />

and provides additional examples of collectors<br />

currently devoting time and effort<br />

to a favorite pastime in the <strong>School</strong>’s midst<br />

and for our community’s benefit. The<br />

interest a collector displays in sharing a<br />

collection is particularly gratifying to a<br />

<strong>School</strong> that both encourages and supports<br />

individual interests and values<br />

connections among members of the<br />

community.<br />

By all accounts, William Fordyce was<br />

a very private man, and after his graduation<br />

he was mainly absent from our community.<br />

In the end, though, through his<br />

thoughtful and generous gift he returned<br />

to the <strong>School</strong> and revealed an important<br />

part of himself. We are moved by his<br />

example and deeply grateful.<br />
