THE STADIUM
The 42,000 capacity Royal
Bafokeng Stadium is approximately
12 kilometres
north east of Rustenburg,
located in the area of Phokeng.
It is accessible by shuttle buses
only, so if you are travelling
by car you will have to use the
Park & Ride facilities.
The stadium was built in 1999 as
part of the Royal Bafokeng Sports
Complex and was originally intended
as a rugby venue. The entire
construction was paid for by the
Royal Bafokeng community, after
whom the stadium was named.
The stadium has been upgraded
for the World Cup. The main West
Stand has been substantially
improved, enlarged and given a
new roof. Other improvements
include the installation of new
electronic scoreboards, new
seats on the second level and the
upgrading of the floodlights and
public address system.
The stadium upgrade was completed
in March 2009, in time to
host four matches in the 2009 FIFA
Confederations Cup, including the
host nation’s group stage game
against New Zealand and their
third place play-off against Spain.
The upgrades cost R460 million,
the funding for which came 60%
from the Royal Bafokeng administration
and 40% from the South
African government.
The stadium is the venue for the
home games of South African
Premier League team the Platinum
Stars, and will host six World Cup
matches namely fi ve group stage
games and a second round match.
FAN FEST
The FIFA Fan Fest will be
located at Fields College
School on the main cricket
oval. This is to the west of the
CBD area and it is also within
walking distance from Olympia
Park and the main taxi rank in
the CBD area. Capacity for the
Fan Fest area is 25,000
GETTING TO THE GROUND BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION
GROUND RULES
Royal Bafokeng Stadium, miles from anything
Rustenburg is in the North
West Province, approximately
120km from
Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The Royal Bafokeng Stadium is
actually located in Phokeng, an
area on the outskirts of Rustenburg
about 12km from the city centre,
and is accessible from the N4
motorway. There is little in the way
of public transport so it’s likely
most fans will cheerfully travel to
the stadium using the Park and
Ride facilities.
Most fans are likely to travel to
Rustenburg from Johannesburg or
Pretoria by coach, bus or will hire
a vehicle.
Stadium Match Shuttle
Services
Bus shuttle services to the Royal
Bafokeng Stadium on match days
will run from the Rustenburg Rail
Station and the Park & Ride sites.
If you need assistance, in the fi rst
instance please call the British
High Commission in Pretoria on
012 421 7800.
There will be a mobile team in
Rustenburg on 12 & 13 June and
(in an emergency only) you can
contact them on 073 193 8359.
One member of their team will
be based in Phokeng Police
station a kilometre from the
Stadium in the two hours either
side of the game.
As with all stadia at this
summer’s South Africa
World Cup, the ground
will open three hours before
kick off.
The South African authorities are
trying to encourage as many fans
as possible to enter the stadium
two hours early. They stress that
security checks will be rigorous
and enforced whether you arrive
two hours or ten minutes before
kick off. So, basically, don’t expect
to turn up the usual 20 minutes
beforehand and get straight in;
allow plenty of time.
TICKETS
Tickets are issued at the
FIFA Ticketing Centre
located at the side of
the Waterfall Shopping Mall.
You will need to have the
credit card with which you
used to purchase your tickets
originally.
We also advise that you bring your
passport with you for identifi cation
purposes should there be a
problem with the machines.
If you purchased your tickets
through the FA and are having
problems obtaining them, englandfans
representatives will be
available at the Ticketing Centre
to assist you on Friday 11th June
THE FOOTBALL
SUPPORTERS’
FEDERATION
Access to the stadium is via a series
of cordons. The fi rst will be a ticket
check, the second a bag and body
search and at the turnstiles a barcode
reader. There is no provision for
early entry or pass out. You won’t
be able to go in, hang your fl ag
and come out again; once you’re in,
you’re there for the duration.
If you have a fl ag with you, you
will be expected to take the time
to unfurl it so that size and content
– to see if it contains names of any
unoffi cial sponsors, any racist/
xenophobic messages etc. – can be
monitored. Again, allow time.
between 11am - 2pm and again
on Saturday 12th June from midday
to 4pm.
Due to the number of fans arriving
the day before the game, it
is likely that the FIFA Ticketing
Centre will be rather busy on
the day of the game so if possible
try to pick your tickets up
beforehand, either at any of the
major airports when you arrive
or at a venue close to where you
are staying.
As the purchase and sale of
match tickets on the black
market is an offence under South
African law, people offering
tickets for sale may invite you
FSF helpline: +44 7956 121314
The usual stadium regulations
are in place – no ladders, fl ares
or animals – and all bags will be
searched. Where possible try to
leave what you can in your accommodation,
safety permitting.
If you are arriving on the day of
the game and have particularly
large luggage that can’t be stored
under your seat it is likely you will
be asked to leave it in storage
and collect it after the game. If
this is the case, remember to get a
receipt for your belongings.
to go with them off the beaten
track, out of sight of the police,
to carry out a transaction.
Be aware that this could in fact
be a ruse to separate you from
your mates and to get you into
an isolated spot where you are
vulnerable to mugging.
WELCOME TO RUSTENBURG
THE FREE LIONS GUIDE TO ENGLAND’S FIRST VENUE
WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK
Waterfall Shopping Mall
Well, to be honest,
there’s not too much
to get excited about
as there are very few bars and
restaurants in the town of
Rustenburg itself. The majority
of places are in the Waterfall
Shopping Mall with a few fast
food outlets such as KFC &
Nando’s on Nelson Mandela
Drive and Fatima Bhayat Street.
STAYING SAFE
The infl ux of visitors for the
World Cup will make it a
profi table time for criminals
so you should make sure you
take all reasonable precautions
to protect yourself and your
belongings.
Cash should be kept to a minimum
and phones, cameras, video cameras
etc should be stored somewhere
secure. During the World Cup a
photocopy of your passport details
page will be accepted as proof of
ID. Follow any advice your hotel or
accommodation may give you about
safe places to walk, and if you are
THE FOOTBALL
SUPPORTERS’
FEDERATION
Within the Waterfall Mall
there are a number of decently
priced restaurants, but do
expect to queue on match
days as they are likely to get
extremely busy.
There are a number of bars in
the Waterfall Mall so it’s the
most likely place where England
fans will gather.
going sightseeing stick to well-lit,
highly populated areas. Stay in
groups, and where possible use taxis
to get around.
Be wary when using public transport.
Local suburban trains are not safe;
do not travel on them alone, and in
particular avoid them at night. Be
suspicious of any offers to ‘help’ you
with cash machines. It’s best to use
ATMs located in the shopping malls
rather than free-standing ones on the
street or in isolated areas.
Carry belongings in a bag hung
diagonally across your body rather
than over your shoulder. If you do
have to carry a bag or rucksack, keep
them close to you in public places.
GETTING AROUND
There’s little in the way
of public transport
so a hire car will be
essential for exploring the
area and getting about.
What transport there are available
- mainly local buses and
metered taxis - will be increased
around the town during the
World Cup.
The Public Transport Hub is
at the intersection of Nelson
Mandela and Oliver Tambo
Streets to the north of the CBD
(Central Business District). It is
expected that shuttle buses will
run from here to the stadium.
BE DRINK AWARE
Who ate all the pies? Hopefully
you did – drinking on an
empty stomach can have dodgy
results.
Ball control: Drinking too
much can affect your judgement
– don’t take risks and
always practise safe sex.
They think it’s all over...
It soon will be if you’re drunk
– you won’t be allowed in the
stadium.
