mark on the world. Your education is only the beginning of a lifetime of learning.
Today, as you take your place in the history of Frostburg State University, I invite you to
return to take your rightful place in its future. We value your involvement, and we hope you will
stay connected with your alma mater now that you have joined the ranks of proud FSU alumni.
I offer my best wishes to you, your family and friends on this day of celebration, and I wish
for you a very successful and happy future. Congratulations again, and the very best of luck.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Gibralter, President
Dr. Jonathan C. Gibralter joined
Frostburg State University as its 14th president
in 2006, bringing a solid record of educational
and community leadership. He earned a
bachelor’s degree from the State University of
New York at Binghamton, a master’s from New
York University and a doctorate from Syracuse
University. He worked in the mental health field
before entering higher education, where he has
served for over 25 years as a faculty member
and administrator.
Under Dr. Gibralter’s leadership, FSU has
improved enrollment; renewed its focus on
marketing, branding and raising the
institution’s profile; and successfully completed
a comprehensive $15 million campaign,
Staking Our Claim: The Campaign for
Frostburg, which exceeded its goal by $1.7
million. The University has also developed a
comprehensive strategic plan to guide its
growth and focus its efforts.
Dr. Gibralter has aligned FSU with the
issues of climate change and sustainability. He
is a charter signatory and a member of the
steering committee of the American College
and University Presidents Climate
Commitment. Since 2009, FSU has been
following the strategic steps to reduce carbon
emissions in its Climate Action Plan. In June
2010, Dr. Gibralter accepted the Climate
Leadership Award on behalf of the entire FSU
community for its determined efforts to be
more sustainable.
Dr. Gibralter is addressing the issue of
high-risk drinking through a communitybased,
multi-faceted approach with his
administration and key constituents off
campus. He was honored with the first national
Presidential Leadership Award for his efforts
in promoting a campus climate that
de-emphasizes alcohol. He has shared
collaborative strategies with numerous higher
education stakeholders and has urged his fellow
college and university presidents to exert their
leadership on this critical issue. Because of these
efforts, he was named co-chair of the College
Presidents Working Group of the National
Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and
FSU is a member of the National Collegiate
Health Improvement Project.
In service to higher education, Dr. Gibralter
is the Maryland delegate to the American
Association of State Colleges and Universities’
Council of State Representatives and a member
of AASCU’s Professional Development
Committee. His collaborative approach to higher
education has engaged faculty, staff, students,
alumni and friends in planning for the future
of FSU.
