Johnson-Fluiten ROTARY JOINTS:
The strong link in your system
The experience acquired by
Fluiten as a mechanical seal
manufacturer has led to the
construction of a wide range of
rotary joints for universal duties,
for coolants, pneumatics and
hydraulics.
Besides the standard models
described in this catalogue,
various special executions are
available (i.e. full Stainless Steel
execution for food and
pharmaceutical plants, with
more passages. etc.).
The reliability of our joints
is a result of the quality of
the materials, the precision
with which we accomplish
our operations, and the
testing of all the joints
before shipping.
Technological
developments can lead,
over time, to modifications.
For this reason, and for any
other kind of question not
included in this catalogue, we
ask you to contact us.

Springs not in contact with the product:
no clogging and minimum head loss.
Wide range of gasket materials: NBR,
EXTERNAL SPRINGS
Fluids that are highly viscous or contain
solid particles can produce clogging of
the seal springs. Externally mounted
seal springs which are not in contact
with the fluid make these joints suitable
to operate with any type of fluid.
LOW FRICTION TORQUE
The balanced seal design minimizes
values of friction torque at increasing
pressure. The diagram on right shows,
for all Rotary Joints sizes, measured
values of friction torque with water.
THE MECHANICAL SEAL: THE HEART
OF EVERY JOINT
Fluiten has been manifacturing
mechanical seals for any kind of
applications for 40 years, developing
an extensive knowledge of all issues
related to the design and production of
mechanical seals.
Fluiten has successfully challenged high
pressures, sliding speeds of 10 m/s
and more.
The range of products dealt with goes
from water, oil, and lubricants to
foodstuffs such as jam or honey, and
pharmaceuticals such as injectables
and antibiotics, for which no emission
are required.
The continuous growth of first installation
seals sales highlights Fluiten’s success
and is the best guarantee for our
customers.
2
1
In R type rotary joints, the seal substitution can be carried out
without dismounting the joint from its application. This is possible
by means of our “Quick Replacement Device”. It is sufficient to remove
the blocking screws (1) and separate the body to substitute the two
seal rings (2) and the O-rings. It is thus possible to quickly adapt
the joint to fluids requiring different sealing materials; in view of such
event we have prepared replacements kits comprising two seal rings,
O-ring gaskets and a series of springs.
Seal on atmosphere side
Thermal insulation to
Flanged connections according
to DIN, ANSI or other standards
Type RHB
Cooling and pressurisation circuit
(Hydraulic pack LHF)
Joints type RB/RHB are designed to work at
the contemporaneous presence of temperatures
of 400C and high rotation speeds. Such
performances can be reached by using two special
seals, with double balancing and with the
interposition of a pressurised fluid for the cooling
of the primary seal.
This fluid is circulated by a pumping and cooling
group that continuously verifies the system’s
effectiveness, and signals through visual and
sound alarms, possible variations from the set
values.
The above results are reached by using ball
bearings with closed loop oil cooling. Oil sealing
is obtained by two double balanced seals that
guarantee the effectiveness of the system even
in case of an electrical failure.
Double mechanical seals with pressurised barrier
fluid avoid any leakage of the process fluid to the
atmosphere; in a worst case event, the barrier
fluid will leak into the process.
Such double mechanical seal systems have been
manufactured and installed in chemical,
petrochemical and pharmaceutical applications
by Fluiten since 1972.
ROTARY JOINT INSTALLATION AND SPARE PARTS REPLACEMENT
The application of JOHNSON-FLUITEN rotary joints is simple and reliable when carried out according to the herebelow
described procedures.
CONNECTION
1. Use only flexible hoses for stationary part connection to
avoid overloading of the roller bearings support.
2. Put the RJ housing in a clamp to tighten the fittings.
3. Use flexible hoses of adequate length in order to have
good flexibility.
4. Very long rotating syphon pipes can overload the rotary
joint bushing.
5. Rotating syphons should have a good concentricity with
the joint rotational axis. For speeds higher than 1000 rpm
an additional bushing, made in PTFE or similar antifriction
material, should be provided in the machinery.
6. Clean carefully the machinery lines connected with the
rotary joint.
NO
FRICTION TORQUE
JOHNSON-FLUITEN Rotary joints have reduced friction
torque (see also diagram on page 5); in any case suitable
antirotation devices must be implemented to avoid rotation
of the stationary part.
• For sizes up to R050 flexible hoses generally give a
sufficient reaction.
• For larger sizes the use of the antirotation pin (see pages
8 & 9) is recommended.
SPARE PARTS
For all sizes a spare parts kit is available.
Each kit consists of:
• Stationary and rotary rings
• Secondary seals (O-Rings)
• Springs
NOTE: For sizes R009 & R012 the entire rotor must be
replaced
YES NO
7. In case of abrasive products the use of seal faces in
hard materials (Silicon carbide vs. Tungsten carbide –
Arrangement C) is recommended. Dry-running is not allowed
with this seal faces material combination.
8. For safety reasons it is recommended to shield the
Rotary Joint with suitable barriers to avoid that people
could be harmed by accidental dangerous emissions.
YES
NOTE
Avoid using the rotary joints in conditions in which pressure,
speed and temperature are simultaneously near to the
max. allowed values.
For high duty operating conditions a correct selection of
seal materials is recommended. In doubt, please contact
JOHNSON-FLUITEN.
Seal faces are lapped with a planarity of two optical fringes
(monocromatic light method).
QRD system (see page 5) gives the possibility to check
seal element conditions facilitating the maintenance schedule.
Rotary joints up to R050 size have pre-lubricated roller
bearings which do not require relubrication.
Rotary joints RH version, recommended for temperatures
higher than 100C, have roller bearing of special design
for high temperatures and require periodic relubrication
(grease with drip point at 250C or higher, SILEX PLS.2
or equivalent).
For this operation a lubricator is provided on joint support.
For sizes larger than R050 a lubricator is always provided.
