stress<strong>in</strong>g that prospective jurors should report to <strong>the</strong> federal<br />

courthouse, not <strong>the</strong> state court build<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• park<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• public transportati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

• normal court hours;<br />

• first-day activities;<br />

• length of jury service;<br />

• juror compensati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

• <strong>the</strong> record jurors will receive of <strong>the</strong>ir days of service for employers;<br />

• suggested attire;<br />

• restaurants and lodg<strong>in</strong>g;<br />

• <strong>on</strong>-call procedures;<br />

• hardship excuses and deferment procedures; and<br />

• ph<strong>on</strong>e numbers to call.<br />

In some courts, jury staff also send prospective jurors <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Handbook</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

for Trial Jurors Serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>District</strong> <strong>Courts</strong>, or<br />

<strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Handbook</str<strong>on</strong>g> for <strong>Federal</strong> Grand Jurors. These pamphlets, which <strong>the</strong><br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Office prepares under <strong>the</strong> auspices of <strong>the</strong> Judicial C<strong>on</strong>ference<br />

<strong>Jury</strong> Committee, may be obta<strong>in</strong>ed free of charge from <strong>the</strong><br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Office pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g center <strong>in</strong> Forestville, Maryland. If a juror<br />

is be<strong>in</strong>g summ<strong>on</strong>ed for a trial that could be prol<strong>on</strong>ged, jury staff<br />

may want to send <strong>the</strong> juror a questi<strong>on</strong>naire to complete regard<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

or her availability.<br />

Transportati<strong>on</strong><br />

Transportati<strong>on</strong> and Park<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The jury Selecti<strong>on</strong> and Service Act authorizes a court to reimburse<br />

jurors' transportati<strong>on</strong> costs based <strong>on</strong> mileage. 28 U.s.C. § 1871 (c)(1). If<br />

a juror must use public transportati<strong>on</strong> for which <strong>the</strong> mileage allowance<br />

does not cover <strong>the</strong> actual cost, a court may, <strong>in</strong> its discreti<strong>on</strong>, make up<br />

<strong>the</strong> difference. 28 U.S.c. § 1871(f). Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Office regulati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
