leave videocassette recorders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> assembly room when <strong>the</strong>y do not<br />

need <strong>the</strong> recorders for tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. A court may purchase equipment and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r items or materials necessary for jurors' comfort and<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venience by submitt<strong>in</strong>g an AO Form 19 to <strong>the</strong> Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Office.<br />

The jury assembly room must have adequate light<strong>in</strong>g, heat<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

cool<strong>in</strong>g, and be kept clean. In most courts, jury staff have resp<strong>on</strong>sibility<br />

for ensur<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> GSA or its designated c<strong>on</strong>tractor provides <strong>the</strong>se<br />

services. There must also be water founta<strong>in</strong>s and separate rest rooms<br />

for men and women <strong>in</strong> or near <strong>the</strong> assembly room.<br />

Whenever a problem arises because of a significant lack of space,<br />

most adm<strong>in</strong>istrators have <strong>the</strong> jury staff document <strong>the</strong> problem and<br />

report it to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r Amenities<br />

A court may purchase refreshments, such as coffee, tea, doughnuts,<br />

and cold dr<strong>in</strong>ks, for jurors out of funds appropriated for jury use. It can<br />

also arrange with <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g manager to have vend<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong>stalled.<br />

Increas<strong>in</strong>gly, courts are provid<strong>in</strong>g refrigerators for jurors to use. A<br />

court may purchase <strong>on</strong>e by submitt<strong>in</strong>g an AO Form 19 to <strong>the</strong><br />

Adm<strong>in</strong>istrative Office or may be able to obta<strong>in</strong> a surplus refrigerator<br />

from a military <strong>in</strong>stallati<strong>on</strong> with<strong>in</strong> its district.<br />

It is important that <strong>the</strong>re be access ramps <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> courthouse and<br />

proper facilities for <strong>the</strong> handicapped <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> park<strong>in</strong>g area, elevators,<br />

rest rooms, assembly rooms, lounges, deliberati<strong>on</strong> rooms, jury boxes,<br />

and grand jury rooms.<br />

In some courts, jury staff keep a list of suitable hotels and restaurants<br />

for jurors not familiar with <strong>the</strong> area around <strong>the</strong> courthouse. They<br />

often send a copy of it with <strong>the</strong> prelim<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>formati<strong>on</strong> sheets and<br />

booklets. <strong>Jury</strong> staff can also f<strong>in</strong>d out whe<strong>the</strong>r hotels that have special<br />

rates for government employees extend <strong>the</strong>m to jurors, and, if so, note<br />

this <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> list. They can provide jurors entitled to a subsistence<br />

allowance with details <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> rate of reimbursement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> court's particular<br />

area, as certified by <strong>the</strong> GSA.<br />
