I’m looking for any information on fake and/or reproduction daguerreotypes and associated frames/cases to be included in an article for Antiques & Auction News. I’m interested in such information as: how buyers can recognize reproduction daguerreotypes as well as frames and cases of the era; how buyers should examine a cased daguerreotype to be sure it’s not a newly-made reproduction and what the telltale di�erences would be; and any other information about fakes or reproductions and how buyers can avoid them. Any personal experience in this area would also be helpful, as well as your opinion on how prevalent you feel this problem is. �e article will be read by all levels of collectors, so no information is too basic. Anita Stratos a.stratos@live.com Query I am an author and journalist based in the UK. I researching the story of the ‘discovery’ of the sequoia trees in California in 1852. It is known that Isaac W. Baker was taking daguerreotypes in the area around that time, and that the Bancro� Library holds a painting by him showing the felling of one of the trees in 1853. �ere is also talk that he might have taken a daguerreotype of the fallen tree, but no example seems to still exist today. I’m desperate to �nd out more about this man. Are you able to help, or recommend anyone to speak to?
