4. Das Erinnerungs-Motiv (2:36, repeat 6:31)
Bald schwindet um die Lust der Erinnerung in Wehmut. (No. 2 im Klavier, No. 4 im
Streichorchester in Moll.)
Der Tanz geht weiter und wird immer wilder. Bis zum Sonnenaufgang soll er wahren,
dann muß der Tod seine Toten durch sechs Tamtamschläge ins Grab zurückrufen. Doch
der wilde Tanz hat von Tod berückt, [bevor] er sein Eigenthum zurückgefordert hat, geht
die Sonne auf:
The joy over the memories are mixed with sadness. (While motif no. 2 is played in the piano

The dance continues, ever more wild. It will last until sunrise, when Death has to call his dead
back to their graves with six strokes of the tamtam. But the wild dance have put Death in a
rapture, and before he has claimed his belongings back, the sun rises:
