ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
Silesian University of Technology was founded as the scientific
and didactic base for the most industrialized region in Poland
and one of the most industrialized areas in Europe: Upper Silesia.
The Silesian University of Technology is one of the leading Polish,
public technical universities. It is a modern institution of higher
education with the history of nearly 70 years that currently educates
over 28 000 students in all main fields of engineering and technology
at three available levels (BSc, MSc, PhD studies). Its strong and
supported by various ratings positions in the regional, national and
international educational and research market allows the Silesian
University of Technology to develop constantly.

majors, including all technical
sciences with particular stress
on modern technologies. The
University also educates in the
field of architecture, management,
sociology, administration and foreign
languages. The didactic and research
activity is carried in modern lecture
halls and advanced laboratories by
well qualified academic teachers,
1800-person didactic staff, including
over 400 professors.
Internationalisation of studies is
one of the priorities. The University
participates in many international
educational programs (ERASMUS,
MUNDUS) and organizes students
and employees exchange with 190
universities in the world. Over 300
students of the Silesian University
of Technology study for one or two
semesters in partner universities
abroad. At the same time numerous
foreign students in Gliwice create the
international atmosphere. The active
involvement of university unit of the
ESN (Erasmus Students Network) is
very helpful.
The offer of the Silesian University
of Technology is not limited only to
education. There are over 20 students
organisations, 100 students research
groups, university music and dance
groups, a choir, theatre and many others. Moreover, Upper Silesia as
a region and Gliwice as a city provide a wide cultural offer. All of these
factors form an unforgetable students atmosphere and do not allow
anybody to be bored.

LOCATION - UPPER SILESIA
The Upper Silesian Province lies in the basin of the Vistula and Odra rivers
in the southern part of Poland, bordering from the south with the Slovak
Republic and Czech Republic. There are almost 5 million inhabitants
here.
The Upper Silesia is full of positive energy, taking its source from diversity
in respect of ethnicity, culture and tourism. This interesting region
offers a range of Poland’s most diverse tourist attractions, including the
beautiful limestone rocks of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jurassic Highland
Chain, with perfect conditions for rock climbing; the mountain ranges of
the Silesian Beskids and Żywiec Beskids with the well-known in Europe
ski resorts of Szczyrk, Ustroń, Wisła or Korbielowo; forests near Pszczyna,
which witnessed the history of the Dukes of Pszczyna and the Upper
Silesian agglomeration with an industrial legacy of almost 200 years.
Owing to the dynamic growth of industry as well as the application of
the most up-to-date achievements of technology, the Upper-Silesia
region became known in the whole Europe in the 18th century. Thanks
to its industrial development there are a lot of very interesting places to
visit here. Many of them belong to the Technology Monuments Route,
for example:
•■ Historical Silver-Mine and the Black Trout Drift in Tarnowskie
Góry, where the six hundred-meter underground vessel drift
along the mine corridors is the biggest attraction.
•■ The “Guido” Coal-Mine Underground Museum, the “Queen
Louise” Heritage Park as well as the Museum of Coal-Mining
in Zabrze.
•■ Prince’s Brewery in Tychy, along with the Museum of Brewing
Industry – an attraction not only for beer enthusiasts, where
the history of this beverage dating to 1629 is presented in the
most modern manner.

LOCATION - GLIWICE
Gliwice has a rich history of nearly 800 years. The city is an unique
place, where tradition, mulicultural heritage, science and modernity
intermingle, creating its one-of-the-kind atmosphere of the atrractive
place to live.
Ages of history and multicultural past constitute very significant
advantages of Gliwice. Numerous historic sites, picturesque nooks,
valuable monuments are enchanting. The Market Square, a central point
of Gliwice, a favourite location for get-togethers of local people and
tourists, has a great charm. A slim silhouette of the Gliwice Radio Station
constitutes if not a symbol, definitely
a signature of the city. A special
attraction of Gliwice are its green
areas – parks, squares, and most of all
the impressive Palm House, bringing
a whiff of exotics to the climate of
the city. Our guests, more and more
numerously visiting Gliwice, will
definitely wish to come back here.
Nowadays Gliwice is one of the most
important centres of innovation in
Poland. Located at the junction of
the A1 and A4 motorways, during the
last 20 years it has transformed from
a city based on the heavy industry
into a leader in new technologies.

a seat of the Silesian University of
Technology - one of the largest

WHY TO CHOOSE THE SILESIAN
UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

Why coming at an University that I have never
heard before? That is the question, a lot of people
would ask. Actually people just know names of
universities that appear in movies or tv series. But
do you know anything? There are more centers of
education than you know, more things than you
expect, there are more posibilities than you can
imagine, and more people that you could meet.
I took a year in Silesian University of Technology
and it was not just an adventure far away from
where I lived for years, but a chance of getting to
know new things and new people as well. Think about it - where I live it
does not happen so often, in Gliwice it happens every day.
- Gliwice is a city located in Upper Silesia and it hosts the main campus of
Silesian University of Technology. Silesia is not an isolated region within
Central Europe, it is just in the middle of everything. You will be able to
travel to a lot of countries without difficulties.
-The staff of Silesian University of Technology always has paid attention
to our problems and questions (what is just the opposite to what I have
experienced at my university). So, future student, don’t be afraid of
asking too much.
Emel Ayyildiz:
It was my dream to study abroad. And in my
opinion, the Erasmus Programme is the best
way to do it. I knew that studying abroad will
not be easy, especially for those who don’t
speak English as their native language. But I
didn’ expect to meet such friendly and helpful
approach from the Polish side. Thanks to this,
lectures from day to day were getting easier.
It was because the people from department
dealing with exchange students were extremely helpful. And it is very
important, because all the students had to pass exams in English in order
to maintain an equal level of education with our home university. And
Silesian University of Technology and Poland are now and will always be
in my heart, I think my friends from Turkey think the same way.
Alper Aydogan:
I choosed the Silesian University of Technology
because I study control engineering and Faculty
of Automatic Control, Electronics and Computre
Science is very good. The other reason is that
I heard about Poland that it is a very beautiful
country, people are very nice and helpful.
I like most that people in Poland are very helpful
and lovely. When I need sth. and when I ask for
help, people always help me. This is the best reason I think.
I like most Erasmus Office in Silesian University :). They organize tours,
orientation days etc. They’re always ready to help you.

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS AND SPORT
ACTIVITIES
The University campus in Gliwice is one of the biggest in Poland, with
13 halls of residence and 3,500 places. The SUT is also an ideal place
for sports enthusiasts. There are 20 different sports sections such as
aerobics, badminton, curling, judo, karate, running, mountain cycling,
men and women basketball, alpine skiing, handball, football, swimming,
chess, men and women volleyball, contemporary dance, table tennis
and triathlon. Thanks to the numerous sporting achievements of
our students, the University has come to the top of the Academic
Championships of Polish Higher Education Schools.

The EU citizens are exempt from tuition fees - they only pay the
registration fee
tuition fees for the BSc and MSc studies in Polish may vary
depending on the major and the faculty, nevertheless they are
not less than 2000 euro/year plus a single registration fee of
200 euro
requirements for the PhD studies - applications from the
candidates are considered by the chosen faculty that
determines the conditions for admission and the possibility
of offering classes in a foreign language. Tuition fees may vary
at different faculties but are not less than 3000 euro/year plus
a single registration fee of 200 euro

TRAVEL GUIDE
The SUT is located near the centre of Gliwice, approx. 1.5 km from the
Central Railway Station. Gliwice has efficient transport facilities which
provide convenient local and international connections.
The nearest airports are:
Katowice-Pyrzowice (KTW, 40 km), Kraków-Balice (KRK, 100 km), Wrocław
(WRO, 170 km) and Ostrava (Czech Republic, OSR, 95 km).

Gliwice offers direct railway connections with many major European
cities, including Hamburg, Berlin, Kiev, Lvov and most of major Polish
cities. Several connections (with trains change in Katowice) are also
available to Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, Ostrava, etc.
