who still has high reputation even if his “work has lost its importance for research”<br />

(p. 251). In this context, van Raan (2005, p. 95) points to <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

“that established reputation is not necessarily <strong>the</strong> same as ‘past glory’. Often<br />

we see that institutions with an established reputation are strong in maintaining<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir position. They simply have <strong>the</strong> best possibilities to attract <strong>the</strong> best<br />

people, <strong>and</strong> this mechanism provides <strong>the</strong>se renowned institutions with a<br />

cumulative advantage to fur<strong>the</strong>r reinforce <strong>the</strong>ir research performance”.<br />

Analysis of US <strong>New</strong>s & World Report ranking data indicate that correlates<br />

much stronger with high research expenditures than with good graduation-rate<br />

performance (Graham <strong>and</strong> Thompson 2001) <strong>and</strong> confirm CHE ranking data showing<br />

that reputation is stronger related to research than to teaching performance.<br />

CONCLUSIONS<br />

Although controversial, reputation indicators are used widely in rankings; in some<br />

<strong>the</strong>y contribute substantially to <strong>the</strong> overall ranking score of universities. In rankings,<br />

but also outside <strong>the</strong> world of rankings, reputation is an important information about<br />
